The What Hi Fi Show 2013!

I had the good fortune to visit in the morning today when the systems had just warmed up and the crowds were yet to come in. The result was that one could hear with the entrance door closed.

In my opinion, the Nautilus and the Focal Stella were in a completely different league from everything else, but then they are also in a different price range. The Focals were new out of the box, and had an ordinary CD player as the source (Pioneer). But B&W has definitely maxed this out - we had the top end electronics from Audio Vision.

However, within a few minutes, we (3-4 listeners) were suddenly told to leave when the owner / manager abruptly came into the room and just switched off the system, stating that some damage had happened. Thereafter when I later entered to have a second chance, the B&W room managers had decided to kepe the door open, and we were hearing top quality sound from the snails mixed up with noise from the corridor...what a pity.

The rest of the systems were mostly pleasant, but a bit flat, and lacked punch, though most of them had very nice soundstage width. I was however disappointed with Burmester. For that price, if that is all you get, then there are plenty of better alternatives, which one can see in the show itself.

I was at the show yesterday. I enjoyed it and thought my special trip to Mumbai was worth it. Could meet Bhagwan for the first time ! Always nice to meet someone you know over the forum but know in person first time.
I wonder why all the focus was on solid state SS amplification ( preamp and amp ) only and none on tube or hybrid amplification ? I mean , no exhibitor found it worth displaying them ? I know there were audio enthusiasts who owned tube amps , and know that many FM s here also own them. So why total disregard?
Few good tube based set ups would have given people different sound to,compare and enjoy.
To young and first timers , it would give false impression that high wattage SS was the only way to go.
Also there was no set up of low wattage amp, high sensitivity speakers , say like SET setup , or similar. Wished there were one or two like that . All set ups were SS with high wattage amps in range of 100-400 watts per ch (8ohm) . No set up had 10-25 watts per ch amp class A with speakers of 90-97 dB sen . Wished it was there, people would have option to listen and think there was another option.

One small suggestion for the distributors there - maybe on the last day you may have a standardised discount coupon where instant bookings and sale is encouraged. The discount coupon can be valid if the sale happens in 7 days of the show and the customer coughs up Rs 3000 forfeitable advance for his / her booking at the show.

They do that. Cinebels (Cinebels: Home Theatres, Speakers, Projectors, AV Receivers Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai & Hyderabad) were offering a 15% discount exclusively for customers who paid Rs. 1000 booking fee at the exhibition. I didn't go for it because the Marantz model I wanted to audition wasn't put on display. The one which was on display was far more expensive.

Bhagwan, I may be wrong, it may well have been Oppo, but PTC could have bought along one of their better CD players. The Stellas were brought in only yesterday, so some other stuff too could have been changed.

On the other matter of B&W, I think I may have written slightly too politely.

The guy who stormed in sported an extremely grim face, as if he had been slapped by someone and wanted to retaliate. He also said grimly that "someone is going to come here" implying that we should exit / vamoose. He then switched off the system.

He then changed it to "there has been a damage. Come back in 20 min." Obviously no one would have liked to come back so soon.

We then trooped to the other B&W room, also on the 9th floor. Surprise, surprise, this person followed us there too, and practically blocked the entrance, and repeated that there had been some damage, and that they would not demo.

I suppose that there really had been a damage, and the manager/owner was not forcing us out to make way for a more valued client, since why would he invent a silly story about a damage? Also, for such a client, his own showroom would have been a better place than a crowded show.

I would have thought that letting a damage happen was no reason not to apologize for the interruption to guests who were already absorbed in a listening session. But B&W sells, so...

I have tried to post a few more pics.
This time with a few captions.
Hope that gives a good idea;

Great to be able to "see" a couple of top FMs.:clapping: Way to go guys! Any more in the earlier pics?

Is it too early to ask if there was any talk of another show soon?:D

Had a great time at my first ever hi-end audio gear expo. Twas a great experience for me, as nowhere else would I ever be able to listen to such a varied assortment of hi-end gear all under one roof. I also enjoyed interacting with some of the FMs I was privileged to meet. Denom, Bhagwan, Magma and Arhantd. Its always great to have a face to a name, and all these guys are such gentlemen, so it was great to interact.
Having played the violin in my growing years, I was always musically inclined. This was then greatly nurtured by the older friends I hung out with in the 80s. These guys had large LP collections of artists as diverse as Robert Johnson, Allan Holdsworth, Dixie Dregs, The Sex Pistols, etc., back in the day when good music was hard to come by. Though I collected a large amount of music through travels in the past 20 years, I somehow never ever had the urge to seriously upgrade my audio equipment.
The WhatHiFi show really gave me the opportunity to hear what so many very respected loudspeaker manufacturers thought was the best sounding loudspeaker they could manufacture and offer at a given price point. If only a year ago someone told me how 2 speakers costing x amount could sound so different, I would not comprehend. Today I can. The show educated me in the sense that I should not pay too much attention to what others think or what others consider a great sounding loudspeaker. I mean the guys who manufacture these very expensive and popular speakers must know more than a thing about what a great loudspeaker should sound like, and if they were so different from each other in presenting the same song/piece, it vindicates the fact that what might sound pedestrian to me might sound heavenly to the next guy. Of course, generally speaking, I think all the companies at the show were of a very high standard, but thence, everything would be personal choice. And its so easy to be influenced by peer pressure, bragging rights and pretense. So Ill try to keep that in mind too before going too crazy...
Speaking of the various rooms, I did enjoy a number of them. Some of the more enjoyable speakers I heard were the Dynaudio Contour Series, the Bel Canto/Tannoy Turnberrys, Arcam/Dali Epicon 6? and the Bryston setup. The B & W Nautilus/800D rooms, the Burmester room and the Focal room overwhelmed me. I havent heard such a cathedral like sound in my life and it just dwarfed and engulfed the whole room making me feel like I was drowning in a vortex of a sound whirlpool. It was was so overpowering, I cant even describe if I enjoyed it or was just filled with shock and awe. Then there was stuff that just didnt sound right to my untrained ears. The Quadrals, the Triangles, etc.
Basically I was happy that I could tell the difference and was beginning to appreciate the various audiophile adjectives that I have heard in the last one year. So in summary, it was both educational and enjoyable.
Which brings me to my favourite room and my favourite guy at the show Khushrau Jilla. I met Khushrau maybe around 18 years ago when he first joined Cadence. And then I met him again around a year ago, when my quest for better sounding gear began. Khushrau has not changed a bit. Always smiling, truthful and honest and always agreat source of information. Like a Wikipedia on anything audio (for me at least). Thanks to Khush, I have heard some of the best speakers in my life. First were the Cadence electrostatics that Khush sold to a very dear friend of mine whom I had taken to meet Khush (he only recently told me that those were his first sale for Cadence) and now the PMCs. As soon as I heard them, I wanted them. They were love at first sound. The musicality, the clarity, the tonality, the soundstage, the quick and grippy bass....all the boxes were ticked. Though I bought my PMCs before the show, I am even more satisfied now, as the PMC room was head and shoulders above most of the other very respected brands. This again is my personal opinion and might be slightly biased as I own a pair of PMCs and Khush is a dear friend. But ever since the OB1is came over to live with me, I listen to music for 5-6 hours a day, and that should tell you something. The wife is NOT pleased.
One strange incident which happened to me at the show, was an incident with a man in the AudioVision Room. This tall lanky gentleman who was there at least on the first 2 days in a striped full sleeved shirt and always following Mr. Cooper around, asked me for a Rs 500 fee for entering their rooms on the first day of the show. I thought he was pulling my leg and I asked if he was joking. He replied NO with an angry face and so I went ahead, not because I couldnt afford 500 bucks, but I just felt humiliated. Somebody told me he owns Cream Centre. Maybe he saw the Russell Peters None of these are amounts I want to pay look. Anyway, I think he just displayed poor attitude.
Otherwise, a great show, that I thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you Denom, thank you Bhagwan and Magma, and most of all thank you KJ for bringing PMC to India. Hope to meet all of you again sometime soon.

OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If true, there are Entertainment tax implications :p

Need a prior license and registration, to charge for a performance. Also Entertainment tax to be paid ( and .... the Entertainment Tax registration taken by the organisers for their entry ticket, cannot be used by individual exhibitors ) .... In short, asking for this money is illegal.

Good to know the audio show was really great and all got to listen some very good setups

But very sad to learn about the attitude of the b&w dealer. If all were uninvited then maybe he should not have participated or the b&w as company forced him to?

Someone selling petty items in a local train is OK with you having a look at his product but ultimately not buy it. You know those people are mostly uneducated. But still he has that much sense then why does not the b&w dealer have it when I am sure he is much more educated then the guy selling products in a local train of Mumbai

Sorry but I just feel SICK with such attitude being used anywhere in the walk of life.

This is 'strange'
I went to the Audio Vision India room on all 3 days.
Thursday / Friday / Saturday & was never asked to pay anything.
In fact I spent 15 mins in the Nautilus Room & 30 mins in the B & W 800 D room on all days.
Did a 'few' experiments with the S.R. Sound Products too.
I was not aware that there was any charge for listening to music.
Well if there was - I am in default of Rs. 1500/- [500 X 3] for 3 days.

p.s. The Person you mention above is Mr. Sanjeev Chona - Partner [1/3] in Audio Vision & yes, he does own Cream Centre.
Met him on 2 out of 3 days & was more than OK with me - I actually exchanged a few audio notes with him & got to learn a lot from him. Informed person in the Audio Circuit in India [imho] !
BTW - AVI sells Raidho in India now. The D3 has 'arrived' onto Indian shores...

Sir
You are well regarded in the audio circles of mumbai and india and maybe known to them since years.
Hence no charges from you

I guess it was for the common man who is not dressed in a suit

4. Primare CD player + amplifier + huge floorstanders (Can't remember the brand) - These were amazing. With a larger room and toed-in speakers, they should be as good as the nautilus.
They were Triangle.Yesterday tried all the available sources in that room.Primare CDp,CA Stream Magic and Project TT.
Obviously TT was winner for the sound that was produced. There was cracking sound of cartridge as it was from different TT.But there was no other distortion on frequency response even at loud volumes.
Next was premire CDp an last CA Stream Magic.Stream magic sounded dry at higher volumes.

I spent 10-15 minutes talking to Mr. Burge Cooper in the B&W 800D room and he was very cordial. He also invited me to to his showroom for more auditions.

Such extortionist behaviour from his partner seems quite perplexing indeed.

On day 2, I went to both AVI Rooms. Mr. Burge Cooper was very cordial and hospitable indeed. However this Sanjeev Chona seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. Also someone must've pointed out the illegality of the additional fee idea. I think Gerry the Merry had a similar experience. Bhagwan - I guess anyone who's anybody in the audio business knows you, so obviously you enjoy special status.

Visited the show on Saturday. Was at the demo rooms between 12 to 4pm. Was fortunate enough to be able to spend ample time in each of the rooms.
Got an opportunity to listen to so many high end equipment for the first time!
Thanks to What HiFi and all our esteemed HFV gurus.
I just missed a chance to speak to Magma since I did not know him by face although we crossed path several times.
I also spent quite some time in all Audio Vision India rooms listening to B&W. But never once did I feel any issues. Maybe the particular gentleman was not present that time, dont remember.
