The What Hi Fi Show 2013!

Very good show. Highly commendable. What HiFi, please keep up the good work.

Tannoy Prestige speakers were no more there when I visited. I was dying to hear them. In its place was a mid-sized Joseph Audio floorstander. It sounded good driven by bel canto electronics, DAC and transport.

The Dynaudio Excite 38, lovingly set up by bhagwan, definitely sounded good. Source was a Yamaha CDP with Parasound(?) pre and a large Parasound power amp (JC1?). The Contour BS also sounded very good.

Nova Audion had two very nice rooms - both equipped with a turntable each. I didn't visit every room but Nova Audion was possibly the only ones having analog setup. Kudos to Mr Sushil Anand. One room has a Clearaudio Concept TT with Cambridge Audio phono pre and Primare pre and power driving a big Quadral FS. The sound in this room is very promising, perhaps limited by the Cambridge Audio phono stage. The other room had a Project RPM 10 TT driving a Project phono pre and Primare pre and power, into a Triangle Magellan FS. This room sounded very good with CD source.

The large Bryston FS played large symphonies effortlessly. In the same room was mbl electronics and speakers. Personally, I was disappointed by the sound of the mbl setup.

The B&W room with the humongous 800 series FS driven by all-Jeff Rowland electronics played effortless music. This setup will do well in a large listening room. No chance to listen to the other B&W room with the curvaceous Nautilus FS.

The Burmester room also sounded very good. Tonality was its great forte, and it dug into subterranean depths.

Best sound of the show for me is the PMC room of Nexus Audio. This room is the barest and most minimal setup. Just one AVM CDP-cum-amp driving a small PMC Twenty-23 FS. The sound from this setup was nothing less than beguiling. Congrats, KJ. Only you can do it!!!

Met lots of fellow forumers - magma, bhagwan (suited, booted, and looking very dapper as usual), denom, and mpw.

Attending Ken Ishiwata's Marantz presentation of their new DSD-capable network player, was the absolute highlight of the visit for me. He's a regular rockstar in my books.

Thank you all for the updates. Nice to know that at-least a first step is being made towards a decent show in India. Now for a really important question for me - since I am in the speaker market to upgrade - Many of you stated that speakers/set ups didn't sound good due to glass, placement, acoustics etc. with some exceptions. So if I did take the trouble to travel to the show, how would I make a decision to buy a pair of speakers based on listening to them in the show. If they sound bad there, I would cross them off, however in my room they might sound great. So you see my dilemma:sad:. Hence my insistence in other posts that a home demo. is critical to realise the potential of any system in your own listening space - a luxury, unfortunately that will not be available to me for many of the brands described in the show. However I am glad there is a show at-least, will create exposure and hopefully market will grow.
Cheers,
Sid

Sidvee...after seeing countless shows I can categorically tell you that shows are one of the worst places to audition equipment. But they are a good place to see what is available and what dealers have put together as a system - sometimes you can tell if the synergy works and you can also tell if it just isn't special. It will help you narrow down what you would like to try in your room (if possible) or at a dealer's showroom.
I think sometimes you will get more mileage from visiting certain FMs carefully set up rooms (if you cannot manage a home demo) in terms of assessing the equipment.
However, shows are exciting and tiring and you always leave with some freebees usually (and a lot of brochures to pour over later) !! :)

And as I mentioned exceptions to show setups always exist - I heard my current speaker the Harbeth SHl5 first in the Audio Karma show in Detroit in 2006, and they way the dealer (Dave Michael Audio) had set it up, with Echo buster room treatments just blew me away, and consequently I own it. Yes but in general I agree with you Staxx, shows are not really right for critically evaluating equipment.
Cheers,
Sid

Hi Sidvee

It was an all Bryston system. The same guys had the all MBL system too. At least the way the Brystons were playing, there was nothing special about it.

Thanks Jls. Was this demo by Audio People? Do you remember what equipment was mated to the Bryston speakers?
Cheers,
Sid

I don't recall the exact models but it was Bryston CDP, pre and power. The other rack in the same room was pure mbl.

Sorry, I don't recall the name of the vendor. Magma and bhagwan - please help with the name of the vendor, and specifics of the Bryston setup. Thanks.

I and Sachin visited yesterday from Pune. It turned out to be an absolutely mesmerising experience. I hope sachin posts photos from yesterday. Here are the stereo setups which I wont' forget -
1. B&W nautilus - amazing clarity and lifelike sound. Even in that small room with difficult to manage acoustics, these were simply unbeatable. B&W's tube loaded driver technology is unbelievably good. Best of the show.
2. DALI floorstanders + arcam amplifier and CD player. - They were amazing. With better room acoustics and listening setup, they might even beat the B&W nautilus. Soundstage appeared limited, but should improve with toed-in speakers placed farther away from a listener. The combination of ribbon and dome tweeters was great. They matched very well.
3. Bel Canto CD player + amplifier and Tannoy speakers - Best soundstage of all the speakers I listened to. Very clear audio. There was a bit of color to the sound - most likely due to the setup.
4. Primare CD player + amplifier + huge floorstanders (Can't remember the brand) - These were amazing. With a larger room and toed-in speakers, they should be as good as the nautilus.

Stereo setups which disappointed
1. B&W diamonds - I have heard these speakers earlier. They sounded amazing. However this time something was missing. Could be due to room acoustics or because we listened to them immediately after the nautilus.
2. KEF floorstanders - Felt a terrible loss of midrange fidenlity. Can't think of a reason. We have heard KEF Q300 bookshelves earlier. This time the same technology (concentric woofer and tweeter) sounded lacking something important. Perhaps because they couldn't survive a tough competition :).

I really don't understand. You walk into a room with equipment costing upwards of 60 - 70 lakhs. There is practically zero wow factor. Maybe guys from this forum can understand it could be the limitations of the room, break in, etc. But the average guy out there who walks in doesn't give a shit to all of these.

Will give you an example of my friends who visited the show. They were very disappointed. They came out wondering why it costs so much and what was all the fuss about. And then we wonder why these guys end up with a Bose. At least all their friends have heard the name

Hi Sidvee

The Bryston/MBL guys have their showroom in Fort. Its in Malhotra House. Don't know what they are called these days.

What i really liked about the PMC room was, apart from the sound which everyone has already commented about, it was todays system, a system for todays generation. A simple all in one music centre with clean looking, unobtrusive speakers.

Thanks Jls. Was this demo by Audio People? Do you remember what equipment was mated to the Bryston speakers?
Cheers,
Sid

It was an all Bryston setup. Don't recall the pre, but the power amps were the 7Bs (ST or SST I cannot say).

The front end was the Bryston CDP.

thanks to the organizers of the show for putting up an event like this.

It is a new eperience for me after maybe 3 years of getting into the so called audiplhile stuff. It was my first show anywhere and for me it was not a question of what to buy but rather taking in all the sights and sounds of the many massive rigs on display, getting to sample dynaudios ( again ) and the nice PMC room.

The room with B&W and Jeff Rowland setup was very nice too. For the first time i think i felt the orchestra and i think i realize that scale is directly proportional to driver. Can't fool physics.

I did not appreciate any of the HT setups as i thank all thats boom-boom-bang-bang-scream is all what you hear ( well...to each his own )

The guys who interacted with ken ishiwata are lucky. Please preserve the photos for posterity. I saw Louis Banks at the Sonodyne room.

I saw a person with his wife and young daughter trying to involve tham in the goings on and i thought thats a very nice way for the folks at home to feel what you feel and get the buy in.

Many folks go the Bose way as they never get an opportunity to see large orchestra level stereo setups and therefore they never feel the music or their soul in the music for that matter.

In this regard, i appreciate the organizers atleast new prospects would have a chance to listen to many options.

It was nice to see Bhagwanji ( though i doubt be will remember me.. i was just a face in the crowd ), Ali ( the usually "buzzy busy".. and zipping from room to room and thanks for showing me the room of jeff Rowland + B&W )

Denom - always nice to see

askii and sachin - i hope the effort to come from Pune was worth it. I am sure it was since we get so carried away with the low model NAD's / PSB / KEF etc.. that we dont get to see real hi-fi ( with all due respect to the well regarded brand names ) like we could yesterday.

I wanted to hear the tannoys too but maybe sometime in surat at J's place

It was nice to spend some time with Khusrau Jilla too - the setup was so simple and so nice and i entirely agree with Prem - modern and youngistan. I thought these was sibilance on the peter gabriel track but that is generallly a source related or maybe my aeging ears. Well done on the room Khusrau !

The ML electrostats were a revelation for me.

The revel salon's had ecellent tonality too..nice to see harsh from lakozy again.

I enjoyed the few hours i had there.. once again.. many thanks..

One small suggestion for the distributors there - maybe on the last day you may have a standardised discount coupon where instant bookings and sale is encouraged. The discount coupon can be valid if the sale happens in 7 days of the show and the customer coughs up Rs 3000 forfeitable advance for his / her booking at the show.

Sorry if OT.

have a good end to the show guys !!

Hardly any reviews on the new OPUS series from SONODYNE.
Not all of us can afford the big names reviewed here.
Did their invitation for HIFIVIAN's not go well?

The Bryston really does look a substantial speaker, but I am surprised at how reasonably priced it is for a big array of custom drivers, independent cross-over unit and specialized cabinet bracing, apparently. Less than $7,000 for the stock passive version (there are a Signature and an active versions also) MRP and probably can be had for at least 10% or 15% less street price.
Did anyone hear the small MBL white speakers too - always been curious to hear them.

Yes Staxx. I heard them with the MBL electronics. In that small room, as expected, it sounded way more open than the Brystons but was a little weak in bass. I think that speaker can sound great in the right set up. It does sound holographic.

I think they needed more space around them than what was provided. If they were placed where the Brystons were placed, i think they would have sounded much better.
