Vinyl I am listening to...

Happy Birthday to Taj Mahal - one of my favourite blues artists, and the greatest living exponent of the genre. On the occasion, I decided to spin a decidedly non bluesy album from him. One of his earliest deviations from classic blues, his explorations would range far and wide in the decades to come. This is some laidback funky, folksy, rootsy country blues (ish). Sort of. ‘Happy just to be like I am’ is, true to its title, a happy, upbeat album, far from the cry-into-your-moonshine-with-shotgun-at-hand-at-4-am stuff that is/was the genre. Heck, he uses a fife to punctuate his vocals! My copy has the sides incorrectly labelled (reversed). Great album imo. 1971, Columbia, USIMG_5480.jpeg

Now spinning The Best of the Spencer Davis Group. 1967, Island Records. Indeterminate English reissue.

Gawd, how outrageously talented was Steve Winwood! Barely 15 when he and his brother laid down some of these bangers with the Spencer Davis group. Ridiculously mature. This doesn’t sound like a kid - more like an old soul.IMG_5487.jpeg

Paul Anka and Elton John today. Paul Anka sings “My Way”, which he wrote for, and made immortal by, Frank Sinatra, in this album. Not very happy with this 1969 recording , though.
