before you wonder 'what the heck!', pls note that this has nothing to do with water!

the older model sonus faber concerto and concertino with biwire option, had very fragile plastic mounts for the binding posts - which inevitably cracked for many people. mine too is cracked.

today i came upon a concertino, whose owner had fixed this by using washers along with the screws.

see the third and fourth photos on this ebay listing :

the washers are the round things along with the screws on the four corners of the plastic plate which houses the binding posts.

appreciate it if somebody could suggest where i could get similar washers. whether i should go in for metal, plastic, rubber washers etc.

Wow this is really dissapointing isnt it. You'd expect something of this grade from a brand like this would last much longer than things 10x lower it's value.

Maybe you can just find it online if you search. where are you based?

nandac,
As said earlier hardware store would be best bet. Metal Washer head screws painted black with felt washer below it would be good in my opinion.

i think it was a design flaw they did not anticipate. sonus faber original concerto/concertino original packing does not have any cushioning - no thermocol/rubber kind of seats provided for the speakers. so when shipped/dropped (especially because the speakers weigh a ton), i think the plastic housing couldn't withstand the pressure and cracked.

i am in bangalore - but to replace the plastic housing will require dismantling/reattaching the speaker cable posts - which i don't want to touch.

i like the washer solution as done by the seller in the uk.

I just hope I dont have to face something like that with my Jamos d830s, though granted they're from the 2800$ price bracket instead of 1000$ concertinos.
The d830 pair weighs in at around 25 kgs together. I think concertino pair together is 15kg ish.

Here's a pic of the jamo packaging, seems to have ample protection.

The purpose of the washer is to spread the pressure of the screw. A felt or rubber washer will have some give: loose things not good on speakers!

I think your screw washer combination as illustrated will be fine and last a lifetime, and if black, will look good too. Just tighten to firm, not to crush the plastic!

Thad,
I guessed with frequently connecting/disconnecting cables gave away to thin/brittle plastic in the first place, so felt would spread pressure more and not to the washer edges. Simple washer will also be OK I think.

Oh... you mean because the connecting/disconnecting is stressing the plastic?

Yes. Good point. I hadn't thought through to the root cause :o

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
