Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Nope. It wont as it can't recognize that audio codec. Even the latest firmware does not have any update for it.

Thanks! Is there any way to change the audio encoding of these clips?
I downloaded a few demo pieces of Sony and Hitachi... and experienced the HD in its full glory for the first time! It's amazing... I could watch TV from a foot away and the pictures were looking like in 3D reaching out of the screen :) ! But I could not get any audio out of any of these clips :(

I am afraid not. The WM HD Audio codec is not widely mixed. But I haven't really bothered looking into it as they were not important to me :)

Hey who ate up my other half of the post ???

I think our Forum is getting overwhelmed with too much usage or something. I dont see all my postings in UserCp, and I am not able to edit my old postings. Sigh!

here is a full blown review in tech tree for this HDD if anybody is interested ( Techtree.com India > Reviews > Mobile Computing > Portable Storage > Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus 1 TB)

Seems to be a good drive. You cannot use a drive without partioning. MS OSs will not recognize the drive. Just because you had a bad experience with one drive should not make you quiver with fright from all drives. Be bold, use a good software such as PartitionMagic.

Did you pay 11,500 for the drive as mentioned in TechTree? That is steep.

Cheers

Hmmmm , nah I paid Rs 5650 /- including vat for the maxtor basic. They gave me this drive as a replacement to my Maxtor drive so for me it is Rs5.5k /- :yahoo:. Hmm ok but this time I will not create any Fat 32 partitions. Maybe since I formatted a 350 gb with FAT 32 could have been a reason for the drive being dead.

Is one able to power on & off the WDTV, as in normal DVD players?
Does the unit gets slightly warm in the standby mode?
Or it is "cold" as in completely off?

I remember reading somewhere that it does remain a bit warm on Standby Mode and needs a complete power off from the plug point to cool it down. However since I dont have the unit cannot confirm the same.;)

I am still torn between whether to buy the WD TV from the USA at $101 or get it from India with B/W !

okay. i hav one question. does WDTV HD have analog 5.1 channel audio output (via RCA cables)? and does it play ALL mkv files, h263 h264 etc etc?

moreover, whats the exact price, i find somewhere its 8300 somewhere its 7500 rupees.

Yes, it does get warm even when it is off. Looks like this is not a big problem as I had kept this unit connected to the power for about a week and had no issues... of course I didn't know about this problem then... i will not try it again :)

Update : WD TV has a global warranty. SO if you bought the product from USA you can claim warranty in India also !
