Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Suprateep,

WDTV is incredible VFM. Unless you really need it on network. I used a laptop for htpc before. Now I am a total convert to WDTV!

i feel WDTV is overpriced ... getting all focus beacuse itz a new device, once the competitors come the same amount will get me a good device with HDD included!

Yup. i think so too. i will wait for divx7. also, WDTV doesnt play DVDs! what to do with so many of them! its basically a USB device.

Overpriced ....??? At 100$ you are getting a High Definition Media player .

Tell me any other player you will get at this price that will play HD stuff.

Blue ray players cost a bomb, and other NMT's are above 200$.

Competitors already are out with devices which are similar or more expensive in price.

Price has come down for WD player after it was launched. it was around 130$ during the initial launch period.

Now u can get it for 100$ in US.

With time technology will change, the next generation upsaling dvd players will be able to play HD content, will support Mkv & x264 format's but that still has a long way to go to be available in similar price range.

There are players with hdd and network support but they cost double the price or even more . In the end a buyer needs to take a call, how much he or she is willing to spend for the same ?

You do have a point there. If only there was a USB Rom drive addon :( !

plus, mkv files are huuuge. more than 4gb usually the 720p ones. so basically, u will have to store them on a dvd. now, how will u copy that to ur usb device? that will take time, first u'll hav to copy the dvd file to ur hard disk and then to ur pen drive.

also the main problem is, hard disk space is limited. u cant store all ur movies on ur Hard disk just bcoz u want to copy the files to a usb device.

U mean store them on a HDD right ? Any file that I have is around 4.5 gb which will not squeeze into a DVD so looking at it this way there is no option but to dump it on a HDD. However a USB DVD Rom would have been a plus. I could have dumped my DVD player in my parents room :D ! My wife is fed up of me and my expenditure on electronics !

I have a different view on this one ,as these days u even get 300 mb mkv rips, so size of the mkv file should not be a issue, just depends on what quality you are happy to view ... and copy.

Plus other wd box users like ram have 1 tb of storage space which is ample to store and watch movies ... as u will need to delete and store new movies as and when required. Plus these days u are getting 16 or 32 gb thumb drives on which u can store ample stuff and play.

Also modded firmwares are coming out for the box to support usb dvd drives, connect Ethernet and other stuff, so it's just a matter of time ...

More and more mkv's are getting bigger than 4.7G. Dual-layer dvd-r's are way too expensive.

You get harddisks right up to 2TB! 1TB are quite common now. A bit more expensive than 220 dvd-r's, but a LOT more convenient :D

Well, I feel WDTV is UNDERpriced!! How the hell can they afford to sell so cheap? Possibly just to get people to spend on HDDs..

they can afford to sell it cheap coz there's no dvd drive! what the hell am i supposed to do with all my 1000s of dvds?

Yes, by selling just the box with USB port, they are creating more sale opportunities for their hdd. It also gives an option to end user to connect his existing hdd or any other compatible hdd
