hi,

Elektron has agreed to send its NMT player EHP-606 Mini HD Network Media Player for usd 250 inc shipping. They say they will mark it as gift so that there are no customs duty levied here. This comes to Rs 12500/- Add 1tb hdd AT RS 6000/- It comes to 18.5k provided i am not charged by the customs guys here. is it worth it?
cheers, sri

Guys,

Any one on my above query?
sri

From the specs it does pass through of HD Audio. Does WDTV do this? Also, has internal HDD, but that's hardly an issue as an 8GB USB will be enough to connect to WDTV. Why the additional cost of the HDD since it already comes with an internal HDD or is that not supplied?

I am wary of Chinese products and Reju did have some issues with his Elektron (check with him).

I'm not convinced about the increase in price to Rs. 12,500 when compared to WDTV. What does it do more than the WDTV? Also, check about the HDD since on their webpage they have it listed as having internal HDD.

Hi moser,

No the hdd is not supplied with it. With this player you can browse and download BT and can play sites like youtube and hear internet radio without the pc.
cheers,
sri

Totally redundant if you have a PC (and everybody does these days) and even for d/l torrents, YouTube, radio on the internet, etc. are way better on the PC. Considering you are set in your HT with the Onkyo, all you need is h/w to play HD formats for which WDTV is good enough or the next generation of DVDP with Divx 7. The Elektron offers nothing of true value for the increased price. Finally, Chinese is always risky. No offense meant to the Chinese, but I've had enough of their products go bad as soon as landing in India right from Beijing and Shanghai. Just don't bother. When you have a cheaper product in the WDTV and with warranty just go with it or wait for DVDP with Divx 7 to come in.

I own Elektron (repaired in 3 months) I found the NMT functions absolutely useless. It's neither user friendly! The only advantage I found was that it plays from external DVD drive. But now I understand that a cooked firmware of WDTV can play also external DVD.

About the customs duties, they always say this "gift" trick will work. But Indian Customs are not a bunch of morons. You can expect a duty of at least 3K. I had to pay duty of Rs. 650 even for the circuit board they sent me back repaired.

As of today I will favour WD TV. But I am not sure if the PQ will be same as Elektron or other NMT players. Once I get a hand on WDTV I will surely comment.

BTW 1TB WD is only 5.2K

thanks moser and reju.

I think the pq should be similar beause both use the same chipset,
cheers,
sri

Yes PQ is supposed to be same. But they have different firmware. NMT firmware is more mature. So seeing is believing. I am also worried about any stuttering with high bit rate 1080p movies.

Haven't seen shuttering with 1.0.1 firmware update. It plays really well. Both Speed Racer and Matrix movies at 1080/24 with DTS Blue Ray rips played really well. I think those two movies would test any chipset.

In Matrix i did hear in 3 frames one sec audio drop. Might have been an encoding problem, this was the only movie which had this problem. But I have read in WD forums this does happen when video bit rate shoots to very high rate.

But of the 150+ movies I have played if one movie has a 1 sec audio drop in 3 scenes, I can live with it.

Yesterday's firmware 1.02.04 works like a charm. Very smooth 1080p/24 playback even with DTS. (That was sometimes a problem with 1.01 firmware in a few movies).
