Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Actually I'm caught in a similar predicament. Lots of DVDs too. What I decided was to go for WDTV now and use it till Divx 7 DVDP come out and once they are available will get one DVDP with Divx 7 and move the WDTV to my parents room and load all movies on HDD or USB for them to watch. WDTV is actually very smartly priced. Nothing even comes close to it in that price range and yeah it might help sell their Passport HDD, but even otherwise it's great VFM.

I plan to keep anything I buy for the next 3 years. So the other option would be is that In a years time a 2Tb drive would be common and cheap. Add the 2 Tb drive with a USB HUB and I am good to go. I have to keep buying high capacity HDD as and when possible ! I can even daisy chain the HDD with my Maxtor if the other external USB has a firewire port. No need for USB hub then !

Illusion bhai - Don't tell me you are using only HDD to backup your movies and other stuff. Not a good idea at all. DVDs are a must too. I backup on both DVDs and HDDs. The reason is if HDD goes then all data is gone, but with DVD you will only lose 4GB of data. Of course on the other hand I've had DVDs (an entire set of them) not read/work after a year or so and ended up losing quite a bit of data there too. Since then I've backed up important data on both DVDs and HDDs. I'm just waiting for Blu-Ray to become cheaper and will then backup on Blu-Ray too.

Data loss will happen to everyone, sooner or later. No one is immune to it. HDDs will fail sometime or the other. Please don't keep all your data on just HDD and risk losing it all.

Can you provide a link to them? I've had bad experiences from Edgetech and Dynex. I've since moved to Sony and they work great, rather are working great for 2+ years.

unfortunately no. they dont have a site, not a proper one at least.

the lasertras ones i buy in kolkata are for 9 bucks each, and if u buy packs of 50 it'll be for 8 bucks. local product but the most trusted brand in our part.

I have used lasertras but dude they are not reliable !! U r lucky here i guess and yes they are damn cheap.

@moser: I used to backup my movies in DVD till now when I bought a 1 TB HDD. I generally used to delete movies after seeing them and have only backed up those movies which I think I would want to watch again. Plus managing such a huge set of dvd becomes a problem especially with the space thingy !

how about writex? its the same price, but in my opinion its not as scratch proof as lasertras is. btw, it all depends on how u handle a dvd.

Yeah I know it's a problem storing and managing so many DVDs, but still care should be taken for valuable data. I got myself a couple of Exec 200 from iBall available at Reliance Digital for about Rs. 800. Each holds 200 CD/DVD and also keeps them secure. I keep all ripped movies in one and all FLAC rips in the other. FLACs are of course backup since I have them on my PC and listen to music a lot. DVDs I watch so they get used a fair bit. And like I mentioned all are backed up on HDD too. It's easier this way and double backup rather than have to rip them all again. Ripping is a real headache...

Well no DVD is really scratch proof as such. Coming to my bad set of DVDs, not one of them was scratched. They just refused to read. They showed up as having zero data, but could not be burnt or used again either. Thankfully most of them were my MP3 rips and did not matter since I re-ripped them again in FLAC.

reripped mp3 to flac? wow! that must have doubled the space consumption.

Oh yeah. I had to get 2 new HDD of 250 GB and 500 GB to hold my Audio CDs ripped in FLAC. Only reason was the 1TB HDDs had some issues initially. Hopefully, we will get 2-3TB HDDs that work without any issues so all data can be centralized in one HDD. That will at the least keep the noise and heat down in the PC.

Yes I have a 5-6 of DVD folders with me which can store upto 80 dvd's. Searching for DVD's is a pain I must say !
