Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Dude check this out :-

B-RAD DVDMOD - DVD-Rom enabled WDTV firmware

One quick question :-

If I copy DVD's to my HDD can it display the DVD Menus thus allowing you to select scenes / songs etc featured in the DVD Menus?

Yes indeed. If you rip the DVD using something like the DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink, then yes this is very much possible. But the trouble is if you have a DVD writer (even a very good quality one) it is not going to read the movie DVDs with as much assurance as a DVD player. A few scratches and the computer drive will be stuck. At least that has been my experience so far.

What if say I copy the dvd using Anydvd software which will free the region coding . So in other words I will be having one Video_TS folder and one Audio_TS folder which will be having the vob files of the dvd. Mind you there is no compression anywhere. We are just copy pasting the files to the HDD. Now if I want to playback those files using my wd tv us that possible with DVD menus and all working exactly as if it was a dvd player ?

I am afraid I am not conversant with the WD TV hardware. But yes, if you play it with any video player like VLC, TheKMPlayer etc, it will work - menus and all.

Yes I know it works in a PC. But whether the same will work in WD TV is really the question. I dont see VOB listed in the specs anywhere !

Most probably WD TV will play them (VOB is basically MPEG 2)

If you are able to rip the DVD to the HDD then you will be removing the CSS encryption. Such un-encrypted movies (video/audio_ts or ISO) can be played on NMT. But original DVDs played through external USB DVD ROM will not run. This is because the Sigma Designs 8635 chipset itself does not decrypt CSS. (Royalty issues here. The production cost otherwise would be prohibitively high.)

So even if you are able to use the WD TV with external DVD drive, using cooked firmware, you will be UNABLE to play original copyrighted DVD movies.

Hmmm its ok I have my collection of Friends which is region free and burned on DVD's. But I really need Hemant, MBR or any other WD TV owner whether it can play non encrypted DVD's from the HDD.

DVD rom is just an alternate to HDD. Whatever restrictions that will be there for the HDD should also apply to the DVD ROM.

Yes, but not vice-versa. DVD ROMS can be used to play original DVD videos by simply over-riding the region code. No need for CSS decryption.

What is the "high" figure we are talking of? There are complete DVD players available from sony etc for 3k inr that have everything inside them to play a DVD rom?

You mean the region code hard coded in the DVD ROM Drive ?

Ok a quick thought here , I know that the DVD disc has region coding and the DVD ROM drive is also region coded . Now I know that we can play a different region dvd disc on a dvd rom 4-5 times before the dvd rom locks itself and can be released only once the firmware is flashed. So i think if we over write the DVD Rom code and make it region free the DVD's should play smoothly right ?

This is beyond my scope of information I had only come across this topic on net. I have no idea about limitations/ feasibilities for license and their economies of scale. But it seems they are working in the that direction and very soon we can have some good news.

BTW Sony is a bad example of a "complete" DVD player as they don't offer a USB port!

Yes, surely. But hope you are aware that CSS is different.

i'm really feeling sad coz i'm having to delete my 720p movies after the conversion to DVD due to lack of space on my HDD. :(

when will the divx 7 reach Indian shores?

Bhai before you do that lets meet up some time and I can store it for you on my HDD ! :licklips:

WD TV can play the VOB files. I have copied many of my original DVDs to the HDD using DVD Decryptor and have been playing them. But it cannot recognize the DVD menus and navigation, nor do I get the subtitles. But no issue getting DD, DTS sound tracks.

Oh no, thats one of the basic functionality which wd tv should have had ! Anyways I guess you cant win em all !

Thats true but I am happy that .mkv files now support chapters. So when I rip DVDs at least i have an option of viewing them through chapters.

Cool . "Now supports" in the sense has the same been enabled thru the 1.02 firmware update ? Also have u tried the custom DVD ROM firmware ?
