Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

It can, but it will play it as Stereo mode not 5.1. Did you use Digital as output or Stereo?

AAC is actually stereo and was created to replace and better MP3.

@illusion - For MKV rips make sure the audio is DTS or at the least AC3 to be in 5.1. Does not make sense for PQ to be soooooo good and audio to be 2-channel stereo.

AAC 5.1 are also available. A "Police" concert in MKV has AAC 5.1.

I want to encode aac / ac3 to dts with a possible sound db boost .

You can encode AC3/AAC to DTS. You do not have a freeware for that as DTS is a proprietary codec unlike Dolby. I am not sure why you would want to do it. Converting AC3 to DTS is like converting mp3 to WAV, you will not gain anything significant.

May be you can try boosting the db in Ac3 itself. However, if you want to do it then you can sue the following:
1. BeSweet (this will make individual .wav for each channel)
2. Buy SurEncode Codec (this will take the individual .wav and make a DTS output)
http://www.minnetonkaaudio.com/products/surcode06.html
3. Use MKV Tool to merge the DTS audio with the video.

Here is a guide:
Covert AC3 to DTS or Stereo

Also as you mentioned earlier , will encoding aac to ac3 increase file size ?

very little say 2-5% nothing significant. I am planning to do this for my HP collection, will post clear data by weekend on the increase.

No Moser, I have many .mkv and .mp4 movies with 5.1 AAC codecs. Since I am a WD owner, I convert them to 5.1 AC3 using AudioConvertor so that WD TV passes it through Digital Out to my HTiB.

Ok lets forget DTS then !

When we encode aac to ac3 using popcorn hour free software , can we also simultaneously boost volumes ? Also is there an option in it to encode only audio and not to touch video at all ?

Yes that goes for my mkv also !

I'm not saying its not available at all in 5.1, just that its not used much. Apple has backed it mainly and its actually found more in online content such as Apple TV, etc. Divx, MKV rips come mainly with AC3 or DTS. The thing is most HT units and AVRs support Dolby Digital (which is AC3) and DTS. AAC does not have that much widespread support. I was setting up a Yamaha AVR for a friend. His Popcorn Hour had support for AAC but the Yammy did not. We ended up converting it.

Have not tried boosting volume. Will check on it.

AudioConverter is only for Audio and not for Video :) it wont touch your video dont worry :)

A quick question to WD TV owners.

How is the quality of the on board DAC? The reason I am asking is. In case I get one, I will have to use it in a setup that will have only 2 bookshelf speakers. At most a sub. With an amp that does not accept digital in.

So, here's the specific query :
Considering that the bookshelves (not bought yet), will at most be Wharf 9.1s or MS 902is, and the amp being an old Sony receiver, would the setup sound any different if I place a dedicated DAC in between?

I mean it'll basically be a low end setup with ultimately only 2 speakers. Wouldn't the onboard DAC and resulting Red/White stereo analog out be decent enough for all practical purposes?

I cant answer in totality, but my experience is Music CD played in WD is better than Music CD played via my DVD or HTiB player.

HDD should not be a problem. Even my WD has the same problem bcos the heat sink is attached to the external casing for dissipating the heat.

Simple fix, I bought a AC Laptop Fan for 160 rs and connected it outlet and placed it in such a way, the air blows over WD and my External HD. trust me the WD is WAY cooler now.

I prefer things running cool :)

Hi, is it possible to post pictures of your cooling system for WDTV?

Re: Mkv file goes into a loop.

Hi I have a large mkv file (Dark Knight - the movie) from a friend. The movie just goes into a loop (after playing the first few seconds), on the WD Player, as well as on the PC. Is the file corrupt? Or is there a way to still play it after recoding?

Does it play well for your friend? If yes, try copying the file again.
Otherwise file maybe corrupt.

Ok I did a re-encode from AAC to AC3. There is a file size increase . The original mkv was 2.36GB which after re encoding was was increased to 2.56 GB. You can reduce the file size if you go for a lower bit rate in AC3 here .

Why would one reduce file size?? How does this marginal increase in size matter? If you have better audio now it's only good for you.
