Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Checked with another dealer today and he is ready to give WD TV for 6.3k+12.5% tax if there is a bulk deal of 5 people or more. It's on cash purchase and he'll charge 2% extra for credit card. Another thing is that he'll take one day to get the players. So he wants 50% payment on confirmation and 50% after delivery next day. Seems to be the best price available currently in Bangy. Anyone game? Or anybody have found any better deal please let me know as I'm planning for one. I've posted this in another forum too.

Konfused,

Which dealer is selling these in Bangalore...could you share some details..as i am interested in buying this.

Thanks
Zorro

only problem is that once u order, it will take min a month for the item to reach you if not more.

Anyone here using the new Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player?

WD TV HD Media Player ( WDAVN00 )

Combined with a My Passport portable drive (sold separately), this player is the most convenient way to play HD movies or user-generated videos, listen to high-quality digital music and show high-resolution slideshows of your family photos on your TV. Also works with popular USB drives, and digital cameras, camcorders, and portable media players that can be recognized as mass storage devices.

This device in now available in India for Rs.8000.00

Gave it to a client and he loves it.

I got the player 1 week back and I am certainly NOT HAPY with it!!

My main purpose for buying this one was so that I can watch Movies on a standard 21" CRT TV via composite connection because If I have to watch on a HD tv I can simply connect my laptop which has HDMI port.

So the pictures keep fluttering on a CRT tv and I can see many lines going up and down. Apart from that the movie is highly cropped towards the sides. That was not the quality I expected when I got the player! Maybe I wouldnt have bought it If I know it will work the way it is working!!

I watch it on a 29" CRT and it has none of these problems whatsoever. Please check your PAL/NTSC settings and the zoom mode.

I bought mine yesterday. Hooked up to my 29" CRT Samsung TV and worked fine. Menus a bit slow but its ok. I have more than 300 titles on my hard drive and it was a pain watching movies on the laptop.

Except the mess with wires and connections I am happy.
Will play more with it over the weekend.

Bought it at 7800/- ex Nehru Place Delhi with bill and onsite pickup warranty.

read the manual carefully ....must be settings issue also see what is output -it should be manual and hdmi should be off

Maybe the pic is not cropped on the 29" tv. I have double checked all the settings. Tv and Player both are set to PAL. Zoom is normal. I have even tried changing to NTSC to see if that help but no use. I will try with a pen drive tomorrow maybe to see if the fluttering display is because of EMI/RFI caused by Hard drive but the cropped picture is certainly a big disadvantage!

HDMI is off. I have checked settings many times. Also have tried changing the combinations to see if it improves but no luck!

The pic would be cropped if our aspect ratios were different. The aspect ratios of 21 and 29 CRT displays in India is the same isn't it. Are you sure the source is fine, if not, the player may be defective.

Sirji the question is not about upgrading. If I had to upgrade only then there was no need to buy this Damn player as I can connect my Laptop to the LCD which has an HDMI port. I invested 7.5 K so that I can watch it on my 21" CRT. If I have to buy a LCD only then I wouldnt have bought the player in 1st place and that would have saved 7.5 k so the LCD would have costed only 32.5k :yahoo:

@ Kneo

What you are saying is correct and there should not be any difference between the pic displayed in 21" and 29". If you can please check 1 thing. When the movie is playing click on options and click on "PAN" and try the left and right arrow keys and can you please check and tell if the movie comes or a black screen comes.

Will be able to try it out only by next week !!!!

I am traveling for the next few days. But from what I remember, the zoom functionality does work fine - will see if I can check the Pan too tonight.

Dude this laptop to LCD is a Pain in the A** . I myself went for a high end Dell XPS for this and then i realized that you not only need to keep adjusting the screen resolution you also have to change your default sound settings. I also bought a USB Digi Optical out but it was so much of hassle that I ultimately ended up buying WD TV . But totally agree with you here, it should work with CRT's !
