Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

I upgraded my WDTV G2 with the custom the firmware y'day (B-rad's), there was some initial hiccups but managed to bring it up.

@Argo, I've purchased the above mentioned Wifi dongle and would be receiving it on hand in couple of hours. It would be really helpful if you could point me to step by step instructions to enable wifi connectivity. Also, do you use any of the app.bins on a regular basis?

thanks

Your understanding is right.

I have never heard or read anything about memory limitations about WDTV, I think even 2 TB hard disk should work with it. Still better to try before buying if possible. And again, the last time I checked there was no USB powered HDD available in 2TB category.

I have a 2TB drive connected, and it works perfectly.

I am planning to purchase a Panasonic 42X20D plasma. I also plan to buy a WD TV to play videos from it. I have a collection of H264 encoded 720p MP4s with me and few MKVs.Would WDTV be able to play these ? What is the price of WDTV and where can i purchase it in PUNE ?

Yes it would be able to play your MP4s and MKVs.

The WD TV Live costs Rs 8.5k I think.
You can buy it online at Ebay India.
eBay India: WD TV Live Full HD 1080p Network Internet Media Player (item 380218692886 end time 21-Oct-2010 18:56:05 IST)

It should also be fairly easily available at yr local computer parts mkt (the equivalent of Lamington Rd in Bombay and Nehru place in Delhi).

Is the WDTV still available? I mean the one without the Network feature. A lot of people don't need that feature.

Yes it is. For examle :
eBay India: Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player (item 200525982841 end time 06-Oct-2010 12:38:00 IST)

The difference between WDTV, and WDTV Live is not just the network feature.
It is also :
1. The ability to decode and downmix DTS 5.1 to stereo
2. The ability to play video files with any number of "Reference Frames" used for compression (the older WD TV has a limitation of 4 or 5 ref frames).

There are workarounds available for both. However, if you intend to watch a lot of video using WDTV, I would reccomend that you buy WDTV Live, and avoid these limitations. The cost difference is not much.

I was expecting it to be a lot cheaper. I think I will wait for the reviews of the Transcend Media Player.

It is indeed cheaper depending upon where you buy it from. 1 year back I got WD TV for 7200/- Rs. so the price would be definitely less now but not on Ebay where prices are generally on the higher side.

Amazon had WD TV back then at 100$ so it is very cheap if you have a friend or relative in Usa.

Even at 20north(.)com you can get-

WD TV @ 6450

WD TV Live @ 8100

including shipping and everything but I dont know how authentic the site is though it looks to be fairly authentic.

Will the WD HD media player be able to output 720p avi/mkv on a CRT TV(will it downscale efficiently to 480p)?I find the process of burning to DVD using convertxtodvd long and painful:sad:!

@Sanchit: Thanks. BTW, we are from the same city.

Oh I didnt notice that. In that case there is one shop in sector 10 opposite hotel Mount View. I got WD TV from there 1 year back and you can check the rate there. It should be less now. The website mentions 6195/- as the price but I am not sure whehter it include TAX or not.

I guess you are in the same situation as I was a year or so back! :D Even I used to burn movies to DVD using Convertxtodvd. The process is long and also quality is compromised.

I bought WD TV to use it with the 21" CRT TV though I can say I was VERY DISAPPOINTED. The picture wasnt clear with lines being seen. Also if you use subtitles it wont be of any help as the maximum size is very small on a 21" tv and is not readable.

I didnt watch a single movie on the 21" tv and packed the box until I got the lcd tv which is now connected to the WD TV.

Though many other members are using the player with CRT tv's and have no issues with it but certainly for me this wasnt the case.

I have found it to work quite well with a 29 inch CRT TV.
Never tried it with a 21 inch.

It has both Component as well as Composite video output (in addition to HDMI of course).

Hi Guys
I have a question for all the WDTV live owners.

I have a .mkv file with DTS audio.
will i be able to get 5.1 surround sound.

What are the setting in the WDTV live?
As far as i know the player only supports DTS 2.0.
I have connected WDTV live with optical cable to my receiver which can decode DTS.

Thanks
Vishal
