Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Hi,

Has anybody heard about a new device which was launched a couple of days ago called - WD LIVE HUB. It is stated that it has 1 TB internal HD. It is supposed to be one up on WD LIVE PLUS. What say. I had googled on it, whereby I learnt that it has no practical use in the Indian usage, the WD LIVE is sufficient, only the redeeming factor is the 1 TB part. ( Think the WD is going the SEAGATE way) Pl comment

Yes, its called WD Live Plus. You can read a detailed review here :
WD TV Live Plus: Western Digital's Latest Media Player Reviewed - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

Looks like the interface is significantly improved. This is something worth paying for.

The built in 1 TB hdd does not excite me. The features it enables (eg Netflix Instant Watch) is not available in India.

^^ No its not Live Plus, its called WDTV live hub with 1 TB internal HDD. It can stream contents to other devices, it has menu themes and an ability to copy data onto its internal storage through usb. Not available yet in India.

Also Live Hub does not support DTS HD MA ,and Dolby True HD Pasdsthrough..

Its disappointing that for so much time Western digital asked people what features they want in the firmware upgrade (for the 1st model) and even had a voting system and showed many status of many features as "Accepted and in process" and now they have completely removed the basic WD player from their website.

Seems like they were making the customer a fool all the time.

its the same thing everywhere man. even microsoft takes all suggestions and all and never really comes up with "fix it all" solutions but a completely new OS with an even more exorbitant price tag.

so whats the USP of wd tv live plus other than the reinvented UI? erm frankly, even things in wd tv live dont work in India (eg. pandora, live365 etc.). now the same will happen with netflix.

all this i guess boils down to the lack of quality content on indian televisions. wish we had good tv programs which would force companies to come up with compatible softwares :(

Looking for a 1080p streaming media player in Hyderabad. Can someone post me the availability and its price to pingksree at gmail dot com?

Thanks

WD TV Live HD works fine for HD media player for that price . In India we dont have much options for media players like these. We cant get a hold of gadgets like PopcornHour or HD Dune or TVIX . All what we have from reading reviews is WD TV Live , Seagate Freagent Theater+ , Iomega Director , Xtreamer . As far from my own experience it works fine . Support for almost all kind of media ( except Real Media & Flash which is supported in Realtek based players like Seagate / Xtreamer ). But quality wise WD TV is better. Moreover it plays DTS-HD audio. DD TrueHD is recognized but dont know if playback is there ( You need a AVR which can accept the DD TrueHD stream).
On recent firmware releases even DVD / BD Iso are accepted. DVD Menu is introduced but BD menu not there .

It can be mainly useful for people who download movies off the net. Many of them are in different formats with mkv being the most common and can have different codecs. DVD players with usb support the most basic ones while media players support almost all of them. So it saves the hassles of converting.

And as far as I know you can download movies atleast through torrents in latest media players. Not sure though.

Asus O!Play Mini seem so be a good option. Price point is really good & plays a lot of formats. Dunno about the availability though.

Quality wise it might be better to just on rely on the TV's engine (or go for a high end htpc) to do the magic - these cheaper boxes are not too good at video post processing.

1. Wrong. It cannot process DD/DTS but it will output it through Optical output. For example, the WD TV Optical Out is connected to my Philips HTiB digital in. WD TV sends the unprocessed signal to my HTiB and my HTiB process and decodes the Dolby and DTS and plays it. As long as you have a receiver or player that decode you are fine.

Hope it helps!

Hii
Jus like u said.. It can passhrough the audio thru the optical output.... Can it Passthrough DTS and Dolby thru HDMI?
Wat Abt WD TV Live... Does this support DD nd DTS....?
