Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Recently my friend had ripped Transporter 3 Dual layer DVD into a 4.36 Gb MKV file for me in his quadcore machine. However when playing back the MKV files the video freezes for a seconds (the video timer keeps running) and then suddenly starts playing again but the scene skips to the timer then being displayed. Is it possible to reencode the MKV to get rid of these freezes ?

Moser already replied, 4.36 GB is a big file and in all my tail and error (from 1.5 to 6gb), I think 2.5 to 3.5 works best for SD content. For settings, see my other thread of how to backup DVD page 2.

Can you tell me what settings he used and also what all sound stream you have included?

Who is the dealor?

some shop next to mahalaxmi electronics..........

btw i was grossly dissapointed.........searched all shops in LR but could nto locate a HTPC.....best alternative I think is to go for the zebronics cube.

BTW there was a HCL desktop with 2.6 core 2 duo processor, 2 gb ram, 500 GB HDD, DVD RW and 5.1 sc, going for a price of 20k minus the LCD. Add a display card with HDMI out within 3k - you got a decent HTPC solution within 24k.
Thouhg the desktop has no LCD display - its sleek with height less than 4 inches when placed horizontally.

No I have no idea how he did it . I tried doing it in handbrake but handbrake abruptly stops after encoding around 40 secs of playback ! I give up. I may as well as get the orginal DVD on my next trip to US , the movie is worth it and the titles are available for less than 5 dollars at places !

Hey Guys,

A bit off track here but thought you may be able to help.

I was trying to rip my legal copy of "Dark Knight" for the iPod using Handbrake.
It takes a long while to read the source and finally shows just 2 chapters (approx 1 min duration) no errors are thrown up.
I am using the preset default for the iPod in Handbrake since I am clueless about any settings for doing these conversions.

Handbrake works well for other DVDs eg Spiderman 3, Dostana etc.

Any suggestions?

Def off track, post if more questions in chit chat under backing up DVD thread. Sometimes this happens to me also. Use DVD Decrypter and copy the DVD to harddrive then run Handbrake on the copied files.

@MBR : Hey is it posssible to rename / delete files from your HDD when the same is plugged to your WD tv or do we need a pc for that. Also I hope they add the capability of copying in between drives without unplugging either of the the drives from the WD TV ! I dont think as of now the same is supported !

Hey did u check which audio stream the WMV HD Clips were using ?

Also if I format my 1 Tb Extarnal HDD to a single FAT 32 Partition using external tools will it slow down the HDD scanning done by WD TV ?

1. You need a PC now. WD does not have copying either. Even I hope they have it. Have even wrote that to Scott of WD TV. Lets what the new firmware comes up with.

2. WMA3 5.1 is used in those files i think. WD TV does not support that, though its already in the wanted feature list. Check the thread at:

3. Why FAT32? It has file size restriction of 4 GB correct? Why would you want it?

Currently I am plugging in my Maxtor 1 TB to the DVR Dock of my Archos 605 wifi . It seems the Archos can read from NTFS parttions but cannot write into NTFS partitons . So till the time I buy WD TV I was thinking of formatting the HDD into FAT 32 to store all content. That way I will be able to edit and delete files on my Maxtor HDD without unplugging it from the Archos 605 wifi !
