Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Hey MBR hope you told your fiance that you are engaged to Hi-Fi Vision as well?

Good luck! You need it man;)

It does happen now and then but the latest firmware is supposed to have fixed.

Previously, I used to use Jubler (i think nto sure of the name) and adjust the subtitle based on the delay. Hardly a minute job.

Illusion: I got engaged and have been busy with that :) thats why not active :)

All the best for the future ahead, Buddy. And as Reju said please inform her of Hi-Fi Vision. Your to be wife has the right to take an informed decision. :ohyeah:

I met with MBR's fiancee when I went to his house for comparing 983 vs WDTV. A lovely girl. Though she shares some of MBR's love for music and movies, she was worried about his obsession with HiFiVision. She got even more worried when she saw MBR and me talking in a language that must be have been Greek and Latin to her. Actually that day, there were also two friends of MBR who also gave up after listening to us for a few minutes.

But I am sure they will live happily together. I could see the love and affection they have for each other and the ease with which they mixed.

Cheers

PS

MBR, don's curse or beat me, OK?

Its common worry.

@ All: Thanks for the hearty wishes :). She is well aware of my obsessions after all she has been my best friend for years now :). She appreciates good quality music and movies so though she doesnt participate in the trial and error she does patiently let me do things :)

Till now we had kept clear timings on when its her time and when its my personal time and has worked well so far :)

Venkat: Thnks for those lovely words, why should I beat you, you have only praised us to heaven ;). I think its time to get WD to put it to the music test what say?

Moser: Its on Aug 24th :)

Update on WD TV:

Offlate, I have been facing some issues with the WD especially with Mp4 and AAC with audio not playing. Recently I downloaded a sample Matrix encoded in MKV and AAC and even thats not playing, though this has happened one is 100 files I am trying to find why and what codec issue is causing this.

If anyone interested, I can post the Media Info so you can also crack u r brain :)

Sri sir, thanks a lot :) but you see I might not loose my freedom for 2 yrs, in fact might have more freedom in next 2 yrs as she is preparing full steam for CAT :)

Congrats MBR, i've been married for almost 2 years and I can heartily recommend it. The wife supports my AV craze even with us being rather young and poor and her being of the view that "if i can see it and hear it, that's good enough" .....all the very best!

Hi,

Based on the recommendations from this forum, I got a WD TV HD for my bedroom last week. Let me confirm that I am not disappointed at all.
The connections took less that a minute, and I could upgrade the firmware in just a few more minutes.
Here are some initial reactions:
+Ve
  • It is a HTPC replacement!
  • It is also a pleasure to use, and is quite 'wife friendly'
  • I have been happy with the video, i.e. MKV displayed through HDMI on the 46inch LCD TV
  • The device looks cute and the remote control is even cuter :)
  • The menus are clear and crisp.
  • I like the thumbnails for the movies. They have an upright aspect ratio, so it looks like the DVD covers laid out in a row.
  • I also checked out some .m2ts 1080p home videos from my friend's Sony video camera; quite impressive.
  • Most of the things that would have bothered me have been fixed in the latest firmware.
I voted for the features in the future versions at:

-Ve
  • Poor quality audio DAC on board. I am using the DAC in the TV, which is better. Apparently even the digital out is bumping up the volume (to be fixed in future). This causes clipping of loud passages. I am still not investing in a separate DAC yet. Let them fix the digital out first. So no music from this device for now.
  • Does not play WMA lossless and Apple Lossless files. Plays FLAC, so OK for me, but no 96KHz/24bit audio out.
  • Does not play DVD menus. At least I do not know a way to achieve this, as Handbreak rips one title at a time, with no menus. I could workaround this problem to some extent by giving meaningful names to the chapters while ripping the DVD. Thankfully WD TV HD allows chapter navigation.
  • I just read that WD is planning a TV HD 2.0 soon. So some of the planned features may go to the next model, even if they need no H/W change.
Thanks everyone for all the useful inputs provided on this forum.

Sharad

Add to Negatives, no good support for mp4 and audio layers in AAC and even some AC3 codecs which is quite frustrating

I did not face any problems with mp4 and AC3. MP4 seems to work but not DivX/XVid. I prefer H.264 as the picture is significantly better for any given file size.

Handbrake takes a huge amount of time for H.264:
  • Single Pass 1500kbps, Decomb: 2 hours per DVD movie
  • Two pass 2500kbps, Decomb, Dinterlace: 6 hours per DVD movie

Tried on two machines with P Core Duo, 2GB RAM.
