Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

A seperate post cause I have a simple but very IMPORTANT question.

Ok, now when I turn off my WD TV do I need to eject the HDD every time before I press the power button ? I am asking this because every time I power off the WD TV my 3.5" externall HDD light remains on . I have to manually go and power off the switch for the HDD light to go off. Is that bad for the HDD in the long run ?

Turn it off when not in use. Not really bad as such but when turned off the HDD shuts off and stops spinning and cools down so much better for it. The modern generation of HDDs are made to last and work 24/7 so if they are on and keep spinning they rarely get very hot and just keep on working.

Ok, but my HDD gets hot when I use it for say an hour continuous , especially when watching HD movies ! So are you sure that its safe ?

MBR/Other WD TV owners any thoughts on this ?

Perfectly safe. It would be easier if it was in a PC to monitor it. I just checked and all my HDDs are at 41, 45 and 47 degrees Centigrade and all are inside a closed cabinet with the dual core CPU going at 59 degrees Centigrade. Don't think your external HDD will be getting this hot.

@illusion.
You need to "eject" only when you want to remove the HDD or other media attached to WD TV.

Otherwise you can simply "power off" with remote after usage.

BUT the WD TV does NOT fully shut off from remote. It will stay warm and will also continue to give power to the EXT HDD. Are you using 3.5" powered EXT HDD?

So you need to power "off" the mains. This problem exists in NMTs as well. But in my Elektron there's an option to press "Power" and "Delete" for complete shut down, but then to power "on" you need to use the manual switch on the media player.

To over come this issue I had mentioned in one of my earlier posts about the remote plug which lets me power "off" mains with any remote itself.

Yes in the longer run it will affect the HDD life, as it has mechanical moving parts.

One way to ensure External power HDD also goes off is to connect the hdd power adapter at the back of the Amp you are using, lot of Amp's have power supply output at the back. So when you turn on the amp it switches on and when you turn it off it will switch off,

Try connecting the same and let me know if it works ...

Infact if multiple outputs are there, you can even connect the wdtv at the back of the amp power out so when u switch it off even wdtv will switch off

Well i have been using external HDD for many years , they do get heated up but never faced any issues, been using them for hours continuous.

One thing that you can do is, i have seen some expensive HDD casings that come with cooling fans, which keep the temperature lower and work well. These casings are expensive and cost around 2k .

Also buy a WD green series HDD as their RPM is controlled based on usage requirement and consumer less power.

The above may work for people planning to purchase a new external hdd or planning to assemble thier own.

Good Idea! I never knew amps had such output. At least my Onkyo does not.

I think this issue has been fixed in one of the recent firmware upgrades. I will confirm once I reach home in the evening.

Version 1.02.07:
New Features:
Added spin down function for USB drives when the device is powered down; previously spin down only occurred when a drive was ejected

Sharad

If you want to remove from the original MKV file then you have to use MKVtoolnix or a similar tool.

If you want to remove from the converted DVD file then right click on "Audio Streams" and then select "Remove Audio Stream".

Already using 1.2.07 !

Confirmed!
Version 1.02.07 fixes this issue.

When you switch off WD TV HD using the remote, the USB drive stops spinning. Please note that it does not get switched off. The light still remains on.

Thanks,

HDD should not be a problem. Even my WD has the same problem bcos the heat sink is attached to the external casing for dissipating the heat.

Simple fix, I bought a AC Laptop Fan for 160 rs and connected it outlet and placed it in such a way, the air blows over WD and my External HD. trust me the WD is WAY cooler now.

I prefer things running cool :)

hemant you get it in Lamington road. MX brand. They cost about Rs. 800-900
Make sure to specify that converter should have Optical IN and Co-axial OUT, as they have converters for reverse function as well.
