What is the charm of vintage speakers? As the adage goes, "old is gold". I have this sensational Sony APM speaker (10" woofer) and love it for its clean sound. Please share if you are also a vintage addict.

My main reason for going towards Vintage speaker is Musicality , Tone, Easy to match with electronics, not that finiky abt placement , doesn't need Exotic cables and the most important one -- Intimacy.
All the above if I need in a modern speaker will be too expensive for me.
Cheers

I owned a Sony APM speaker long back. I never felt that speaker was for serious listening. I thought the sound was very artificial. For me, there are only two advantages for a vintage speaker. One, matching issues were the least in such speakers. No specialised cables were required for these speakers to sound good. Two, old songs, old recordings sound best in vintage speakers. But otherwise, vintage speakers could never match the detailing, imaging, sound stage etc of the newer speakers.

Vintage

Would not be able to keep up with complex quick passages
Will.not play trance or hip hop

But in doing all this
The simplicity of the vocals come to the forefront
And because that's what it plays best ( the human voice )
Vintage still has its buyers

Simple play the vintage music or simpler music
You will like the vintage speaker

Vintage speakers are best for Vintage music ( Any music recorded until mid 80's), Where we had more instruments into Music tracks. Also its pleasure looking at those 8+ '' two way or 3 way designs. Vintage speakers carry some story.

Lot of option or choice JBL, Cervin vega,Infinity and those US speakers suits for rock, metal songs
European speakers are more into neutral warm classic, jazz music

Easy to match the speakers with some basic vintage or 90's amp and enjoy music.

Not sure if i agree with most of the comments
if we do take "Vintage" as before 80s, several models of speakers from Pioneer Exclusive, Tannoys , JBLs, Klipschorns, Vitavox, Klangfilm , Yamaha Ns Series etc come to mind and these are speakers which can Run head to head with any modern speakers in everything from dynamics to soundstage.

I have a vintage field coil driver as old as 1938 - 8", a 12" woofer -1962. These pair great with SET tube amplifier and sounds accurate and clean for retro music. This would be because most retro music were mastered using similar speakers.
Most modern music are mastered using digital technology and active monitors. Even then these vintage speakers sound great for modern mastering too. I doubt if any standard current generation speakers can play retro music accurately.

While playing music in low volumes, vintage speakers take a backseat. To get the best out of them, we need to crank the volume up, which we can't do in modern days without seeing those awkward ridiculous faces of your neighbors.

Which Vintage speaker are you talking about ?

I doubt if you can ever generalize vintage speakers into any bucket other than in an age based one.

Don't agree with this at all. On the contrary the opposite is TRUE IME. Most vintage drivers are Alnico magnets or field coil type with higher SPL atheist 10dB higher than current ones.

I tried driving my excellent Dayton Audio 2 way floor stander which is vouched by my customer for SQ @Ash but they can't be hardly heard in my 3+3 watts tube amplifier even at full volume. My vintage speakers require around 8 o'clock position for decent SPL.

The old Japanese ones.

I never said sound wouldn't come. I mean to say the large drives of the vintage speakers may require the amps to crank up the volume to get its full. Of course for tube amps. it is always better to connect speakers with high sensitivity to sound good. (More than 90 db)

Not sure if you have heard an old Yamaha ns1000 or a Pioneer 2301/2401- their dynamic capabilites are fantastic . So many others like the diatones or onkyo scepter series or even old jbl inspired Sansuis are supposedly jaw dropping although I have not heard them.

All are old japanese ones.

Unfortunately, I have not heard any of those speakers you mentioned. Long back, I too fancied the big vintage speakers from the stables of Akai, Sansui, Kenwood etc. But ever since I got introduced to the smaller drives of the likes of KEFs, Monitor Audios or the Spendor I am now using, I never really liked the vintage tone. Personal taste of course.

The vintage speakers play very well even in low volumes..You should try listening to the vintage JBLs,Pioneer,Sansui and Yamaha.

its like comparing apples with bananas....for all of the above the right ones to compare would be the equivalent cheaper ones of today not the ones you have mentioned

Vintage speakers need very careful paring, say for example Sansui amp/receivers with JBL are the best - Clear mids,Hifreq and low bass. Japan Vintage speakers goes well with Europen\British amps like Nad, quad, arcam. Once i matched JBL and Pionner with Arcam and i could say they give 10* price of modern gear.

my vintage jbls plays amazing even at very low volumes , the above statement is completely wrong, we cant genaralise all in same catagory, when we are making a statement we have to refer specific, i cant agree. its all about sensitiviy and other perameters, i have used onkyo scepter 2000 and its dinamics are amazing even at low volume. i have no idea why u mention old japanese speakers

Those are one of the legendary speakers around !
Can add Japanese speakers like some of the Technics, Yamaha NS ,Pioneer Tad speakers etc to the list ..they will be more or equivalent in dynamics to any modern speakers
