Amp enclosures/chasis cabinets

Anil

It might help people sitting on the fence if you could give a rough breakdown of cost for building an F5. If you leave the enclosure out-people can decided what they want to spend, the rest of it might be interesting info.

George

George,

I have already given the cost breakup details in my F5 post in the DIY section.

Cheers.

Sorry I overlooked that. I think for 17K +/- and a good diy speaker system + sub whenever one wants to get it, and a media player, one cant really go wrong with this kind of option, not merely as a start up system, but also as a keeper. I really dont know what kind of commercial system will match a combo of this kind, thouhg I do recognise that diy is not to everyone's tatse. All I can say is that it is a rewarding route to follow!

I agree. There are very options out there in the market (not to mention the astronomical pricing), which can better a Pass F5 amplifier for music. Couple that with an excellent high efficiency speaker design (full range or a horn based) and you have a system for a life time. What goes without saying is that the source material is expected to top class. Regular MP3 stuff is a big no-no. My opinion ofcourse.

Cheers.

Absolutely correct about MP3. I have used the flac route for my music, though ripping is a bit time consuming and think that's the only way to do it. For internet radio, streaming audio at lower bit rates is a good , convenient option though.

full size?
for a preamp you need a 2.5U!
that high?

I have tubes remember? They stand 8.5cm tall from the base where the PCB mount is threaded in. Ad extra 5 to 10mm and it becomes 2.5U

@Suri, A glass ceiling!! why didnt I think of that? Glass ceilings are fun with gals on the roof :licklips:

Cheers

oops i forget
its an active pre

what size are you looking at width and dept?
what do you need in the front and back other than a volume control knob in the front , RCA inputs and RCA outputs, switch, power socket

you guys are so good at googling
send me a pic of a resembling preamp you would like to have ( outer case)

@crisscross

what query sir?
the cabinets posted above by me HAVE a brushed aluminium finish themselves!
only they have been Micron anodised (after the brush finish) to the color black

these were my first cab projects

ive done a couple since then

here is another one im working on
it is quite differnt and hence im posting

The foundation of this build lies in the extruded sections shown in the pic
these will hold together all the 6 faces of the cab
they will allow us to slide open the sides or top or even the bottom

The top and bottom faces will have NO screws
will post as work progresses
P.S this build is for a fellow member here

Dream cases ...but price kills

i agree
but kaushik do understand most of times my builds are for people who are very particular and finicky
For e.g my amp cabs in all probability weigh twice that of amps from Acoustic research etc
Consider that people even having equipment from high end brands use sandboxs to damp vibrations from the stock cabinets.-- if you account for such tweaks the cab is not too expensive

This cab is SOLID al with 6mm panels ( sometimes 8-10mm)
there is no punching or bending done to form the shape of the cab ( as commercial offerings have)
everything is Milled

Magma,
Any info. on the price?

nope.
i dont know the final price of the current build myslef
(will know when i ad up the costs later)
Luckily my client understands this and has given me a fairly free hand

About the older amp cabs though - i think ive posted the price somewhere

Ah I see. Would it be possible at all to quote a ball-park price (+/-20%) for a 350x150mmx 15~17" with 6mm thickness?

are you asking for
W*D*H

17" * 12" * 3U ( i.e 5.25 inch)
with or without heatsinks ? ( similar to the black cases done earlier?)

this is a fairly large case for DIY.(actually it would be largest ive attempted apart from an F5)

most Diyers are happy with a smaller one like peter daniels cases

I'm planning ahead for an F4 actually. The heatsinks would most probably be these in 151.5mm lengths. You're right, 17" might be an over-kill, maybe just 12-14" should suffice I'm thinking. Brushed black finish would be preferable if it would not be too expensive. What do you think?

P.S: Would something like this work effectively?

ahh the conrads from australia
i hope you know the shipping costs as much as the sink!

anyway
17 inch is large i agree - but many a time i do understand that 17 inch is required so that all your electronics looks the same incase you have a stack

in the case you dont have a large stack then yes 12 inches width would be fine for most purposes

Most of the times i notice a 9 inch depth is also more than sufficient

The sinks you are thinking 151mm fins 13inches long
these are serious sinks
class A build ?

well if you send me the sinks the rest of the cab is not at all difficult
all the panels are simply screwed onto the sinks

the sinks i used in my build or have access to are not so long
check the heatsink thread

Yeah the FirstWatt F4's! I just may run dual-mono so the amps would not be in the rack, I'm thinking. But all options are open. How much do you reckon they would cost?
