Cabinet Build for Gr-Research X-LS Encore kit

Guidance required!

Which terminal of tweeter is + and which one is -ve? I can't see any marking but only one narrow and one wide terminal. Same thing on woofer marked - thin is -ve and wide is +ve.
Please advise.

Thanks for sending me an e-mail on this. Anytime you guys have anything over here that needs my attention please feel free to send me an e-mail.

The wider terminal is the + and the thinner one is the - on both woofers and tweeters.

Completed -
Crossover before covering with 1" polyfill. Wire were ample, another 10" left with me. This is heaviest bookshelf I have ever handled. Crossover is attached to bottom with the help of 4 screws.

Initial impressions:
Bass is detailed and filling the room while front baffle is 20" from backside wall. This distance is affecting to LF very much. In bedroom setup (back wall was >2ft away) with any volume level I was able to hear bass guitar strings. High are smooth but need to open up. Compared to Wharfedale 9.2 which sounds boomy, this sounds in control. Initial harshness in vocals decreased after couple of hours play. Just getting this operated in Run-in condition with TV and DIY Tripath Amp 2022 (100W/ch). Overall :yahoo:
More I will write after couple of weeks.

experiment with toe ins once you are burnt in 50hrs

quite a bit of difference
in full toe in on axis position you get a supreme intimate feel however you sacrifice the soundstage width

P.S : expect the speakers to sound like shit at 7-10hrs - dont get upset
wait it out

@omishra: great build. Congrats!!!! Enjoy. Thanks for documenting the steps in such details.

@sachu888: see what beauties you're going to get:)

Looks great :). Congrats!
BTW any plans for a grill? If so I would appreciate pictures of their construction.
Enjoy :)

Thanks Magma, You are correct. Now after 10hrs of playing they are sounding distortion free. Vocals - hi-low are clean and string are clear. HF emerged from somewhere and tweeter have started producing enough sound. Also I can see quantity and quality of output improved. Earlier I kept volume control @11' position. Now its back to 9'O position with same relative volume.

Meanwhile Sachin's boxes are ready and I will post pics once I get cable to connect mobile phone with my comp. Initial impression are good - similar to no-rez'ed box. LF is open and enough. Other issues are same like stated earlier - burn-in required. I tested just for 2 hrs or so.

Pleasant surprise Sachin. Didn't knew you played musical instruments.
Very good build by Om. Since speaker placement is low wouldn't little wedge below speakers change direction to listening position ?
Regards

Hi Hiten,
My Father and younger Brother play musical instruments of various kind.I don't have proper stands for speakers, planning to diy one. This is a temporary arrangement.

Regrads,
Sachin

The bookshelf was designed for this speaker in mind:)!?

one question though, How does the rear port help/change if placed completely flushed inside the cabinet?

This is a temporary arrangement.
.. ok! got it

how would u comapre ti to the wharfi 9.2?

May be I can ask Swapnil or Sandeep, even Rohit who all listened both of them. First two fellows were part of A-B comparison. :)

Okay they are no where near to each other. These speakers go very low than 9.2 in bass reproduction still tight and controlled. 9.2 vocals are heavy and these are cleaner, realistic. Highs are more natural and smooth.

sachuu
you are gonna play the X-LS like that ?
in a cabinet at floor level?

defies the purpose of going through the effort doesnt it

wouldnt a better place be on the shelves on either side of the TT?

No not at all. This was just a temporary arrangement.I will keep them in proper position ASAP.

Hello Mishra Ji,

I will hopefully be starting my cabinet build up work by the end of this week. I came across two terminologies in this thread i.e. Silicon sealant and Tar-felt-tar layers (~3-4mm in total). I request you to help me understand these things in little more details.

Regards, Amit
