Hi DENOM,The problem is that the SONY AVR's are not officially launched in India and i didn't find any SONY WORLD where they have displayed their AVR' s.

I might ultimately have to shipp in the avr,To the best of my knowledge the only HT combo is some model5500 which has become obsolete today because of its limitations as a full blown AVR.

The ones available outside the country are feature rich and giving good competition to other players .Hope i get proper guidance through folks out here because i have never purchased anything from outside India,don't wanna get duped or charged heavily for the shipment.

In that case, pls go for something that is available locally, all the more since its your first time as far as avr is concerned, why not demo the denon/onkyo/yamaha avr's & get feedback based on your experience of these units? That way the HFV family will be able to sort out your queries & doubts.

Yes, sony avr's are getting rave reviews in publications & websites, but whats the use if you can't experience them in India via Sony themselves or their resp dealers. Going by heresy alone is too big a gamble.

I have finally made my purchase.It's Yamaha V667 definitely. It's superior to 608/1911 in 2 channel stereo by miles.To me most balanced between the three in terms of movies:music..
In movies all sounded same to me with onkyo's treble a bit on the higher side, wich was not of my liking.608's volume is terribly unbalanced. What I mean is, sound is audible after 60% of volume.
Guys, I did a lot of audition before buying this with the same music CD and same movie DVD.Onkyo with Jamo 606 HCS, Yamaha with their own speakers and sonodyne sonus package with 2605 towers, denon with polk.
Yet i would like to add that audition it yourself , because it's for your ears only.
I would like to thank all in this forum for their valuable advice.

Congrats! Time to update your signatures :) I agree on your point that the Onkyo only gets heard above 60% volume and we noticed the same last week while auditioning them with S606 however I think the people at promises made some mess as it sounded as if the onkyo was not loud enough at 60% while driving the S606. I loved the Yamaha NS8900 series of speakers and their amp as well but may at the end go for Denon 1911 due to it video upscaling property as the driving factor. Although my main focus would be 90% movies.

It uses a better DAC( Burr brown), which is available in high end denon models.
Moreover don't forget it has preouts which Denon 1911 doesn't have.

Sonodyne Sonus 2605v2 towers are better than Yamaha 8900 anyday.
I am telling this after my vigorous audition.
But still it's for your eyes and ears only.So you are the best judge.

Have you auditioned Marantz? SR5005 is a very good AVR specially for Music. Its always difficult for AVR to perform good in music compared to an amplifier. Marantz does a very good job here.

I had auditioned Pionner CSX 920-K / Marantz SR5004 / Denon 1911 / Onkyo Dont remember/ Yamaha 567. Marantz was a clear winner in terms of clarity and detailing. Onkyo was the next best. Denon and Yamaha did very well in Movies. Unfortunately did not audition onkyo 608 and yamaha 667 which are being discussed here.

If possible, you should audition these AVR's. Matching the AVR with speakers is very important.

Denon does a very good job with Dali's and Polk's
Marantz does well with Jamo's, Klipsch and Energy's

One good thing about Denon 1911 is they 9 band equilizer. One can adjust them to suit personal preferences. Not sure if other AVR's have them.

I am also looking for an AVR for my setup. Have Shortlisted Marantz AVR or Pioneer AVR with Marantz Amplifier.
 
hav gone thru a lot of reviews/forums, etc and have the verdict that in terms of listening to music denon is good (no offence meant darshanjoshi) at its value...

was chekcing out a few deals in Uk as i have one relative coming down this month...m trying to convince him real hard cos i am getting it at 289 gbp and if i add 28 gbp i get a 5 yr warranty as well..

so works out a good deal...

btw darshanjoshi where in mumbai can i audition the marantz???

and doesnt the speaker avr combo make the difference and not just the avr???

and what is the diff in prices between the marantz and the denon?

What i read is pinoeer is good in terms of features but audio wise denon is good( watch cnet youtube video denon 1911)

feature wise as i do not have many devices to connect so i am not gng to be short of ports or anything like that..

devices i will be connecting is Set top box ,PS3 and my laptop ocasionally...

also i wanted to go for the energy classic set as then i would be fullfilling my requirement of a setup in the budget i alloted for me...(sounds untrue....i know )
 
Its always a personal choice so u must audition and then compare, reviews only give rough idea and tell us about various features packed in the system. well in my case, for music i found yamaha rx-v667 better than denon 1911.

i am not much of a power listener...

My aim is to get clearer sound even at low volumes...

I believe yamaha may be good but for loud volumes...
 
I have auditioned the three of them with the same cd and DVD 4 days back. The auditioned lasted for two days at four places in Kolkata.

Yamaha V667 was a clear choice for me specially for being the most balanced for music and movies.I have already purchased it and I am waiting for my speakers to be delivered by courier.

Go and audition for yourself, and get what your EARS say, instead of what others say. Best of luck!
 
This is in reply to the previous post, As I own an Onkyo for over 8 months now, Initially I experienced the same issue with volume stabilizing after 60>70, Even the Support Technician could not help me out. Finally after much of Self RND, It Sounded better then before, Even at 05 produces a decent volume in the night. Now it is unbearable to listen above 50, hence I locked the max level at 50.

If anybody is interested know further:
I discovered that the volume increase depends on the source as well as the settings. Since most of the enhancement settings are set to off by default Like:
Dynamic Volume.
LFE Level.
Intelligent Volume.
And Off course speaker volume and Speaker distance.
There were few more setting which I don't recollect now.

However I have to change the setting as per song/movie and input source to the get a perfect sound. Hence I prefer to listen to similar genera of music at a time because by the time my settings are set, Half of the song is over LOL.

Anyway Congrats for those you got the 1911 and 667. All three are Good products and at the end of the day, Its the personal preference that matters.

and guys what about speakers...at this moment i dont want to invest more than 40 k ina ll...so i was wondering about going for a pair right now..and maybe 4-5 months down the line when i hav enough cash...will go to complete the setup...

I see that you purchased the polk 400 series. How much did the 5.0 cost to you and how much was the sub? How big is your HT room size. I am asking these for a good guidance since Polk+Denon combination is on my radar.
