Dish TV recently announced that it had signed a deal for additional transponders to enable it to increase its total transmission capacity and increase the number of channels on offer.

The increased transponder capacity will enable Dish TV to increase its standard definition (SD) channel capacity to over 320 and high definition (HD) capacity to over 30 which will be substantially higher that any competing DTH operator in both HD and SD transmission. [The company will increase its total transmission bandwidth capacity to 648 megahertz from the current 432 megahertz.]

Can this be a game changer in Indian DTH Industry (provided Dish TV improves on Customer support and addresses basic technical issues like multichannel audio)?

They said the same in 2008 when they announce 400 channels lol still they dont have and which 30 channels are they talking abt? All Upscaled :D

Dish TV is not going anywhere.. All gimmicks..

BTW, who needs MORE channels anyway? If they can transmit existing channels in DVD quality I will change without a doubt.

Dish TV = Inferior quality + Too much unwanted channels!

Dish TV = Technically challenged
Dish TV = Low Tech
Dish TV = FAKE HD
Dish TV = False advertising
Dish TV = Lip Service (false, self promoting press releases)
Dish TV = Cheap price
Dish TV = Inferior quality

When I got DishTV's HD service in June, I was told they'll start 6 HD channels in 2 months time. It's 6 months, HD channels are limited to NGC and Discovery. Zee, Zee Cinema and Ten sports are recorded in SD and transmitted in HD, so hardly qualify for being called HD. Sigh..........

I have a theory - every brand this guy is associated with, is a product/ service that is much worse than ordinary.
Nokia phones - I hated them since I saw them a decade back. Though I did buy some, each one of them added to the theory. People were ready to hang me when I said Nokia UI sucks, but thankfully it has been proved now with the sliding share in smartphones.

Airtel - my connectivity problem not yet fixed, reported on 11th Dec. What more to say about this company.

Dish - you guys are giving feedback here. Thank God I didn't take dish tv connected.

Good for dish .....then,ok do you get ten action on dish tv?confirmed? Me and my friend are big soccer fans, just wanted to know?

Dish transmits max south channels to pile up the channel count numbers, good for south but bad for rest of india.

Dish TV people are making fool of all Indians. They have only three HD channels but claim 35 HD channels. It is big fraud and I really wonder how people tolerate such a fraud. They are be-fooling 120 million Indians.

I think all will agree to this here (actually 4 + 1 DD HD real HD channels). They still have "16:9, End to End HD" mentioned on their website and their COO is marketing it likewise. They are calling all the rest of 31 channels as REAL HD with 16:9 End to End HD which is utter rubbish and deserves to be SUED BIG TIME... I get very irritated how we people in India can tolerate such rubbish and some of us embrace it with open hands.

Dish TV is selling those crappy HD boxes through TV outlets where vendors make a fool out of common people.People(except Hifi guys and technically sound guys) hardly know what Real HD is.Dont know when Indian Law is gonna sue these guys who transmit upscaled channels and call them as Real HD.

They are going down BIG way. Tatasky, airtel,videocon... all thankful to dishtv customer care and their Hardware.

Its us (including me) who is NOT suing them for such SCAMs. Indian Law can not help us unless we help ourselves. If we could join hands, we could sue them big time. Least we can do is to claim heavy compensation for each of us from these SCAM MORONS!

Problem is, even if you sue them, you will loose. In India full HD is defined as 1920 x 1080 pixels. DishTV will prove that their picture contains those many pixels.

It's easier and they have already done that. All it takes for them to transmit in H.264 format and set the framesize to 1920x1080. If incoming aspect ratio is different there will be black bars containing no information. It'll still be HD! If incoming resolution is lower, H.264 will contain fewer individual pixels per macroblock, making encoder's job easy.

Well, they can't upscale regular SD channels and term it as HD just because they increase the resolution. I am sure this SCAM is very much provable... Just because they increase the resolution of a lower resolution content, they can not call it HD and NOT educate the customers accordingly.. They just can't say they are broadcasting in HD and hence calling those channels HD. Max they can call them is Upscaled...

Talking of aspect ratio, they are not even optimizing the aspect ratio of a wide screen content and just blindly upscaling all the 4:3 content including the letter box...

There are 2 LIES they communicate in WRITING - End to End HD and 33% more Video content with 16:9 aspect ratio. Based on these 2 LIES only we can sue them heavily as they can not prove upscaled channels having end to end HD processing or 16:9 aspect ratio! Hope you would agree to this..

@prankey,

All what you say is true as per the standard worldwide and acceptable definitions. But those do not matter. What matters is how TRAI and other regulating bodies have defined HD. In the court, the following scenario will happen:

Magistrate: Do your signals confirm to the (Indian) definition of HD, i.e., 1920x1080 pixels in 16:9 aspect ratio?
Defendant: Yes, your honour.
Magistrate: Can you substantiate the claim that you are providing 33% more video content?
Defendant: Your honour, our HD services are providing the content in 16:9 format which is 33% more than the conventional 4:3 format. Hence we stake this claim.
Magistrate: OK. Case dismissed. Next case please.

Probably over simplified and over stated. But you will get the gist.

The best way is to boycott all such providers (not just DishTV). That should teach them a lesson. The problem is that there are not too many providing real HD content. Yes. Even the most reputed TataSky HD is not completely HD for all channels. While shopping for a plasma TV, I saw TataSky HD on the TVs. Whenever, I used to switch to other TS HD channels, I could observe the upscaling in Star Gold HD, Star World HD, etc. The salesman used to switch back to SET-MAX HD (showing IPL) immediately.
