DIY audiophile rack

MDF is supposed to be acoustically "dead". Shouldnt matter too much, but then small differences matter a l:)ot in hifi ...
Cheers

Thanks for the info. I am planning to take MDF/or plywood with just apply 1 or 2 coats of wood primer and an enamel paint. No sanding. Edges will be covered with a plastic strip ( or lamination? dont know what to say)

@dichkaun: Sure I will do it.

@gobble: Forgot to ask an important thing. What is the thickness of your MDF? and after dividing 1Mtr into 5 sections, what is the gap between the racks you are getting?

I have the 5th board lying around as I forgot to buy enough nuts and washers. With the 5th board in place I expect atleast 9 inches vertical room between each rack leaving a foot from the bottom floor If I recall my estimates right. Which is more than sufficient. Currently rack is looking ugly with too much room between shelves. Actually divide 1mtr by 5 and do the math.

Why do you need to laminate the edges? Use primer, lightly sand then paint, lightly sand then paint again for best results. Only velvet roller will work with MDF. Do not try brush or sponge roller.

Cheers

Hai Hifiashok,

I can see a NORGE amp & EQ, pl let us know what are those models and from which year of mfg.

N.Murali.

Norge Professional Series 2020 Mk II

Norge Stereo Graphic Equaliser EQ-10

Over 15 years old (will check and put up the exact dates if needed).

The Eq. display is to die for, one of the reasons I will never give it up.

I got SS rods, washers and nuts quite easily from SP road. But now the problem is with MDF. Local sellers are not giving in small quantity. The whole sheet (standard) coming in 8x4 feet. But I may require maximum 19 square feet.

Could you let me know from where did u get the MDF small sheets custom cut according to ur needs?
And by the way the SS rods are looking fantastic. Very strong and solid :)

regards,
Anand

There is a wood cutter in Thippasandra market who will cut fancy designs circular, oval, whatever. I tool 8x4 sheet from next door shop and cut it immediately. If you are coming this side, I will escort you to his shop.

But 8x4 sheet is 32 square feet. U needed that much?
What did u do the remaining portions?

What size are you cutting the boards? I used up pretty much most of it. And the minimum size you should cut is 24"x15". I used the golden ratio.

Cheers

I thought of cutting into 29"x18"

But I guess my maths gone wrong..(as usual :))
u said the sheet is 32 Square feet. 8' long and 4' wide. How many 24"x15" pieces can be cut from it?
then 24x15 x5, u used almost the whole sheet? Let me know your computation.

@ gobble

Hi gobble, i have been following this thread, and i need to ask-

is there an evidence based protocol for the construction of these racks for audio
equipment ?

or is it like black-magic?

hi anandkrishnantc,

True, and i now wonder if the entire audiophile experience (this being subjective) is based on black magic!!:)

The most important thing for me is to build something useful, in this case a furniture and get satisfied. And I do not care if the audiophile experience is not as great as expected. Currently I dont have a good rack to keep my stuff. And the shops offer cheap quality with high price. So want to do something interesting to myself. If I am in my home, I would have set up a workshop by this time. In bangalore, .......:-(
And moreover being in IT job, doing something creative with real-world stuff is thrilling....

If we just walk thru SP road once, can understand, the amazing world of metal and tools. Now want to quit the IT job to become a carpenter.....
