T Antony was good enough to work out an enclosure for those attending the DIY workshop last Sunday. Broadly speaking, the driver is available from either Jeetubhai in Bombay or Sumit Khanna in Delhi, for around 2800-2900 plus shipping. The box dimensions can be posted directly by him(please post details on this thread), and can be ported or sealed. All one needs to do is get a terminal from MX for around Rs 100, and a suitable amp-could be a plate amp or build an amp with an active crossover. For port, standard PVC pipe of correct dia and length can be procured form a local sanitary shop. MDF is 3/4 inch and one sheet will do the trick with some left over. Sunil prepared a sheet cutting layout.

Georgo,

Which driver are we talking about in specific. would like to read up the parameters and build one for kicks if its worthwhile.

This is the Peerless 12 inch-AFAIK there is only one of this size so they dont have a model number. If you're located near Delhi contact Sumit Khanna, if your near Bombay Jeetubhai, both stock this driver.

FWIW, Ahuja also has a 15 inch sub driver, I dont know what it costs. T Antony has one of them and there is a thread here on a build using this driver. I also dont know how suitable this is, but I am sure one can design an enclosure to suit this.

Yes, will look into it once i finish my Rythmik build,
Will take on this project or similar after that and put it up for sale here with 0% profit. Will help someone who has no time or experience DIYing cab etc and is cost conscience.
Benefit for moi. "Something to do over weekends instead of nitpicking with the better half" :p

is it this driver ?IM

That looks like an Illusion Carbon car subwoofer. Damodar had a relationship with Mr. Christie and these wofoers were (I believe) designed by Cary.

I love that woofer. If you get it buy all you can and hide them from the world. That's what I would do. :D

In Isobarik config, they have compared favourably against JL W6 and Morel Ultimo Subs.

PA drivers normally dont sound good in home environments. They dont have the same slam as usual home drivers. They are designed to have high sensitivity which is partly achieved by reducing the Mms. The cone is thinner which results in less isolation of the rear wave.

15" Ahuja sub has Mms of ~ 100 gms while the 15" sub drivers at PE have Mms between 200 gms to 300 gms.

OTOH PA drivers are very fine for open baffle/dipole alignments that need not require isolation of the rear wave.

What do you think t.antony?

Goldy

Its the same driver and design I used for my ported sub woofer as described in this thread - http://www.hifivision.com/diy/19965-my-ported-subwoofer.html

Here are the construction plans.

Front panel is made of two sandwiched sheets

For the port, try to get a pvc pipe with internal dimension close to 9cm (3.5 inches). Length of the port is 12 inches.

The dimensions seems to be fine for a sealed sub as well. If planning to build one, try to acquire a plate amp of 200w or above. For ported version as in the plan, 150w should be sufficient. I am currently using 120w amplifier.

Here are the TS specs of the driver from the manufacture's data sheet. I could not find any model number on the driver and it's simply referred as a 4ohm 12 inch sub woofer in the spec sheet I received from jeetubhai.

Fs : 24.94 Hz
Re : 3.68 ohms
Qms : 1.17
Qes : 0.45
Qts : 0.32
Le : 0.53 mH
Vas : 256.35 liters
Mms : 59.71 gms
Cms : 678
BL : 8.80
SPL : 94.7 dB
Sd : 518.75 cm2

Goldy,

I am hooked to the bass accuracy of these drivers. They have excellent transient response, the percussion instruments are reproduced more realistically than their hi-fi(or home-fi) cousins. I never felt any "slam" deficiency with them... :)

All my experiments with those drivers were in different OB alignments and I am inclined towards using/recycling the rear radiation, hence don't have enough exposure to comment on the the role of containing the reflected wave at the diaphragm.

Have you seen the econowave designs on the web? they use PA drivers and have excellent reviews, there are different sealed and ported designs with these dirvers.

Wish someone in Cochin or Bangalore came up with a similar offer :D;)

Damodar who?
Christie who?
Cary who?

The pic you posted resembled the subwoofer here

and here
illusion audio nd-12 and infinity beta 300 - diyAudio

Damodar = Peerless India & Cary Christie = Illusion (same guy who was once with Arnie Nuddel at Infinity)

From Peerless India's webpage you will see many of their systems use Illusion drivers like the Strata series Products - PeerlessAudio.com

Guys these drivers are seriously good drivers. If you can find them buy them. If they are anywhere close to the ND-10 and ND-12 models that Illusion sold (via Hermit Audio in Mumbai) they should be excellent value (I say this without knowing the asking price so please discount this).

Varsha Electronics(Jeetubhai) quotes Rs.2750 for this driver. Courier and taxes extra. He can be contacted at [email protected].

These drivers come in a pack of four. He will not ship drivers individually as they could easily get damaged in transit. Those who wish to purchase from him can express their interest in this thread and we could possibly consolidate according to location.
