GR Research N3 Speakers and Servo Sub Build

josephjohnt - I have glued and screwed the pedestal on to the bottom of the speaker.

As for the finish - I am thinking Red like the Monster Headphones. I have given a small panel of MDF to a Car Paint Shop along with a pair of Monster Beat Solo headphones to prepare a sample - lets see how that goes. If not, I will have to start hunting for alternatives.

Way to go!!!

Magma is planning to paint his X-LS Encore scarlet red (think Ferrari cars:)). And I am following suit. The next Mumbai meet will have a sea of red speakers:)

Sorry for going OT !!!

Great to hear that :yahoo: Be ready for showcasing them in the next meet which will be taking place in Dec'12 (Have let the cat outta the bag:ohyeah:)

So all you GR kit guys have sufficient time
Will start a dedicated thread on meet info once all in place:yahoo:

:)

Sent the cabinets out for painting to a car paint garage close by. It's going to take a whole week for the job to get done.

The subwoofer, pair of N3 floor standers and the N3s center channel all together will cost me 10 to 12K, which I thought was very reasonable. I am really hoping that the finish is good :-) Fingers Crossed.

thats a great price point to have especially considering the cost of the drivers etc..

very encouraging for budding DiY's

Great cabinet build and cross-over. I too will join with Denom and mpw for the audition. Do let me know when its ready.

Cheers

L A R G E R pictures Please!.
That surely looks good.

hmmm... you say this will be your baby boy? or baby girl?:ohyeah:
...beautiful or handsome is your choice to accept.

@vin_eme - There is no "need" for the bitumen per say. I decided to get a little adventurous with the Subwoofer build. I had recently used dampmat in my car doors which worked out really well. So I basically followed Danny's design for a sand filled sub, and used two 3mm Bitumen sheets instead of sand.

I have added the photos to my flickr account:

I was originally going for a red finish. But then after I saw the speakers with red undercoat, I wasn't sure if Red was working for me, specially cause the speakers are so large, and there would be four of them in close proximity. So went for black instead.

@sbg - Black Beauty :-)

Hey Buddy,

I think you did the right thing by doubling all the panels and probably also by adding two layers the mdf layers.

I was also thinking of sand filled box for my GR servo sealed sub, but then decided not to use sand and used double mdf panels on all side, but even with that the sub shakes a little bit.

Excellent job over all and piano black paint is looking awesome :)

Regards,
Naren

Hey that is useful piece of information for those who are yet to take up their build. I'll certainly keep in in mind.

@Surrealistix, is your sub ready and firing. Kindly share your experience with the sub? If adding a layer of bitumen sheet even minimises vibrations considerably (if not totally eliminate) it is worth taking up, considering the unwieldiness due to weight that sand imparts.

Paint job is still in progress. There were some flaws in the first attempt, so the painter agreed to have a go at it again, we lugged the speakers back from my home to the paint shop. I was with the painting crew in the paint booth with no overalls, must have a coat of lacquer on me :-)

I think it's come out right this time,so I should have them back home all setup before the weekend.

As for the Sub - applying the bitumen sheet was a big pain in the butt, but the box does feel very solid, I will find out if it helped once I play it. I hope it doesn't vibrate much.

Ronnie sent me an e-mail with some questions that included a link to this thread.

I answered his questions in the e-mail, but I just wanted add this tip here in this thread.

The kits do not come with slip on connectors for a reason. They degrade the signal considerably. Please don't use those in your build.

The wire that was sent out in the kit is a 99.98% pure Copper in polyethylene. It is a VERY high quality internal wire, and fairly expensive. Please solder the wire straight to the driver terminals for the best sonic connection.

Breaking the signal path of the wire and inserting a slip on connector is about like splicing the wires together by wrapping it around a nail.

Is this only for cabinets or drivers + XO + cabinets? If it's all inclusive that's awesome! To test the waters I gave a simple FS design to a carpenter last week and he said a pair will cost between 17-20K just for cabinet (no grill/driver/posts/XO etc)! Would really appreciate it if you could give a break-up.
