GR Research N3 Speakers and Servo Sub Build

@Danny - Thanks for the tip about soldering the wires directly on to the driver. I feel so much better having gotten rid of the slip on connectors as they were simply not making the best contact.

I was worried about frying the coils by soldering the wires directly and hence used the connectors to begin with, but I was able to solder the wire to the terminals very quickly and easily by tinning the terminals and the copper wires first.

@Atharva - it was 10 to 12k for the paint job of the FS, Center and Sub. I ended up spending 20K as I had to take it back to the paint shop 3 times to get it done right.

@naveenkumar - The wires that came along with the kit is single core pure copper, so I guess you could look for something similar locally.

Speakers are ready to Rock n Roll!!

Hooked them up to my receiver yesterday and my first impression was WOW!! Big Sound and Silky smooth tone.

A big thanks to Captain and Danny for everything. This was my very first DIY speaker build and its definitely a keeper!

Kudos! :clapping:

What would you say the total price of the cabinets came to excluding the drivers?

Congratulations on completing your build. The finish is very good. Eagerly waiting for review along with other FMs.

I had the N3s hooked up in my bedroom all of last week connected to the receiver watching movies and listening to music in Pure Direct mode on my Receiver. They sounded pretty good, except the bass was a bit boomy, which is most probably multiple room modes around 80Hz, will need some EQ.

Yesterday, I moved the speakers to my Stereo room and paired it with my DIY Aleph 3 and the Prism Orpheus DAC along with the Servo Subwoofer crossed over at 40 Hz. The overall setup sounds absolutely phenomenal.

Here are some pics from my music room.

FMs are planning visit to Satayaki home tomorrow to audition his horn TL speakers which is using a Fostex driver. This was already planned before Diwali. Not sure if we can club Surrealistix tomorrow. Will defiantly plan to audition them later in the month.

Cheers.

Heard The Speakers today with FM Hari Iyer.

Surrealistix had paired them to his Hypex 400HG Amp which is a Class D amp & used the Prism Orpheus Dac + Pre.
Played quite a few tracks some of which were mine to & some 'Audiophile' ones played by Surrealistix :rolleyes:

Initially The N3's were paired with the Servo Sub. Since the sub was not tweaked to work in sync with the N3's the resultant sound was quite muddy & un likeable. Requested Surrealistix to switch the sub off & from then on we could enjoy the music :p

Though Surrealistix has burned in the speakers for 100 odd hours, I personally felt the ribbon tweeter needs more time to burn-in.
Overall I liked the sound of the N3's, with the tweeter hitting towards the bright side, probably will settle down post adequate burn-in is my conclusion.

I think Surrealistix is quite happy with the kits he built & will keep them in his HT Set-Up for a while now :D

Hari immediately jumped when he realised that the N3's are TL design speakers & was therefore more keenly hearing the speakers play :p

We then requested Surrealistix to let us listen to Hari's K-100BTL's with Paper Cone Drivers connected to same amp/source.

PS: The room in which Surrealistix has set up his audio rig is quite heavily treated & listening position calibrated with using dsp software. So we must also get a chance to hear the speakers in a un treated room as well to get an idea of how they sound sans treated room. Wonder if that will be possible

Surrealistix can fill in the details of his impressions now ;)

Will keep you posted on the fone if we can make it tomorrow
:)

We can meet tomorrow. 2

You might want to check traffic conditions tomorrow. South of Shivaji Park and North of Bandra should be ok.

Lucky man. You have a bedroom, Stereo room and a music room. For me my bedroom has to perform all these functions and I share this room with my wife (think WAF).

What were your impressions?

Yes I saw a sunburst Les Paul, older Yamaha electric, and a DIY Marshal clone head and cabinet in the room too.
