How to play mkv file on Sony Bravia LED tv-a guide

Though Sony TV like Bravia enables us to enjoy video files from a USB device, it has video format limitation. It only supports videos in MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MP4, WMV, ASF, DivX HD.

In order to play other video formats like MKV on Sony Bravia TV via USB, a simple workaround is to convert them to Sony TV supported video format.

No bravia can't play srt file.

I've started this thread focusing on how to play mkv on bravia incase you don't have a media player.

It can play dolby digital and mpeg-4 avc codec which are mostly used in mkv.

It is the limitation of m2ts format which prevent srt playback.

If someone wants to play mkv in a tv they can buy those bad sets from other brands.

bad sets from other brands. lol

I recently tried playing frozen in mkv in my w950a, it played - only there's a nagging error message "unsupported file format" all the time at the bottom of the screen.

For srt files, please change encoding in tv to UTF8 - it'd work.

My Sony Bravia TV is saying audio not supported.

Can anyone helpme out.

Here is the mediainfo

HEVC is the latest video encoding (x265 format). Bravia supports only x264 encoding. only few 4K T.V in the market and some bluray player supports x265 format.

So your model wont play HEVC video. In some cases even if it plays you will be able to hear only the sound not the video.

A simple work around : If you have a PC/Laptop, download "Wondershare Video Converter". Then convert the video to x264 format.

To convert 2.5GB of video to x264 format your laptop takes quite sometime which depends on processor ( mine i5 4th gen - takes 20 minutes to convert 1GB of HEVC to x264 format). the output file will be three times in size of input. in your case the output file would exceed 7GB.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
