Is it time for another DIY workshop in Bangalore?

So far the time limit factor has been well handled ,

may be small tips i can add here:

Soldering Diy workshop has to be little more hands on,the average newbie and polite gentle man should also touch soldering iron, flux, solder and finally have a feel!

if needed i will do a detailed one someday, with real components.
Some info i will add here feel really important in addition to the presentation on soldering.

1) Dont use local solder wires ,they are all pretty bad at least as per as i know
desi variants i can trust are sincon/westex, i could not get in bangalore
Best WBT from ebay at 15$, small spool u can use to make 2-3 medium dacs
2)Flux: fumes are bad ,natural rosin is good but for smaller smd it will be messy
but this chemical bro does wonders neatly ,available in mobile repair tool shop
3)SOLdron+AL tip (buy xtra) :must ,get time for life very less cleaning, coating
4)JAckey(low cost) screw driver set is must tool of trade , IP alcohol from chemist is great cleaner of joints ,pcb

5)Also very useful is ,wet sponge tip cleaner is must..goes 50/- or so

BEWARE:
there are 2-3 types of SOLDRON fakes!!
get real one from this or Lynx or OM(bangalore shop)

westex solder is available at the MX shop on SP road. about 80 bucks.
How good are the solders that have the flux in the core of the solder itself. is extra flux required while soldering using that solder.

Great pictures Santhosh, especially for those of us who coudlnt make it there, must make a trip to Rajat's place with some like minded individuals sometime in the not too distant future....and to Sajith's place to check his tapped horn sub, and to Siva, and to Stevie and to Rajiv's place and to..., and...

So much to see, so little time, so much to hear so little time!

George, most welcome on any weekends.

There will be some delay in uploads of Video.
it may take a week to upload 16GB SD content, so scaling it down further and trying other formats right now( avi, mp4,divx etc )

Guys,

I use lead-free solder available at S.P Road (at the shop selling motor-winding copper wire). Yet to try it with the Rosin that Philip gave.

@doors666
the inside flux is useful for quick joints like wires ends (i use it for most quick jobs),small pins .As the flux vaporizes in a few seconds for bigger solder points >3mm it is not . Bigger soldering area=>extra paste flux is needed...
@santosh do you get small qty , they say only 1 kg at 900 or 1200Rs

Chandru

Thanks for the link, worth encouraging and supporting a local vendor. I remember their office near Richards Park, very close to Clarence School, many many years ago-SVictor.

Hi Santhosh,
Lead free is not good and its very difficult to remove.I found 60/40 solder best for DIY work.

Sachin

Hello all,

Well spent Sunday! Thanks to the organizers/presenters and special thanks to Anutone.

Would love to have a next session on source, DAC, HTPC, NAS, etc...

Regards,
Venu

Venu

No more on speakers for some time, as Anil said on Sunday we definitely will cover HTPC and NAS and probably room measurement software( most of it HT related), and source, DAC any other subjects that people want us to cover in the next DIY session.

Cheers

Even though this was only my third HiFi meet and it felt more like meeting old friends than a conventional seminar.

Thanks to all those who stayed back for a visit to our modest 'workshop'. Unfortunately, we couldn't accommodate everyone that day but would be happy to arrange another visit.

A lot of credit for the wood shop should go to Antony and Sunil. After I heard their lecture on speaker design in the last meet, I decided to build one for myself. But when I discovered how difficult finding a competent carpenter is, I put the drivers in the top shelf and decided to solve the woodwork problem :) I have no idea what shape it will take but I am determined to get to the point when I don't feel helpless and dependent when I need a cabinet or a PCB or a amplifier chassis.

A special thanks to Rajiv. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy your and Steven's talk, it was refreshing to listen to an audiophile who didn't feel the need to show disgust at the mention of words like 'mp3' and 'Denon'.

Thanks George and Santosh, for organizing the meet and Anutone for hosting us.

BTW, what happened to the beer?
