Hi everyone, this is my first post

I want set up a HT in my living room

Dimensions are 17' x 18'

I am planning to buy

- TV - Panasonic 42 inch ET5 series (TH-L42ET5D) ~ 70k (Passive 3D)

- Onkyo HT - S5400 7.1 Home theater system ~ 50k

- Sony PS3 play bundle ~ 18k

- Logitech harmony 700 Universal remote ~ 6k OR Harmony 525 ~ 3k

- Videocon d2h HD STB - I already have Videocon d2h HD for my bed room so I just have to get multiroom connection an I am very happy with d2h

I want passive 3d as I found it good in LG, also panasonic has built in wifi, smart features, not available in other tvs for same price

Onkyo fits the bill for 7.1 as other mix and match setup are very costly (I want to setup everything once and I want 7.1 as I already have old Sony 5.1 DVD HT setup)

Logitech 700 has 6 devices support and good database and learnin too, can control ps3 vis HDMI CEC (confirmed), but 525 though older supports 10 devices.

Other components required are HDMI cable

Also onkyo supplied speaker cable is too short for surround back speakers

My queries are:

1. Is DAC speaker cable AWG OFC good(sold at hifimart)?

2. Which gauge to get - 14 / 16 / 18 / 20? Should I

3. Will it void warranty if I use other cables with Onkyo HT?

4. Is DAC HDMI 1.4a cable @ 1.1k is good(again sold at hifimart)?

5. Should I replace all cables from onkyo with DAC ones for good performance? Or just surround back?

6. Should I get cable for subwoofer too? I ask this because I have doubt that if I use different cables for each speaker the performance will be affected.

7. Any other good and cheap hdmi speaker cable suggestions?

8. Any other HTIB or AVR + speakers less than 50k? I know there exists none, still any suggestion

9. Onkyo does not show 24p support, dont know whether its going to be a problem

10. Any other TV suggestion?

11. Will Onkyo play apple lossless from ipod?

12. Will PS3 play back apple lossless or flac?

13. Is Logitech Harmony 525 supporting 10 devices is better option than Harmony 700? Any user feedback

14. Is 42 inch TV small for my room length (16 foot)? Should I go for 47 inch?

My queries are:

1. Is DAC speaker cable AWG OFC good(sold at hifimart)? HIHIMART IS GOOD

2. Which gauge to get - 14 / 16 / 18 / 20? Should I 14-16 FOR FRONTS, 20 FOR SURROUNDS SHOULD BE OK, LOWER THE GAUGE BETTER THE CABLE.

3. Will it void warranty if I use other cables with Onkyo HT? NO

4. Is DAC HDMI 1.4a cable @ 1.1k is good(again sold at hifimart)?YES

5. Should I replace all cables from onkyo with DAC ones for good performance? Or just surround back? ONLY FOR THE FRONTS & CENTRE IF YOU WANT.

6. Should I get cable for subwoofer too? I ask this because I have doubt that if I use different cables for each speaker the performance will be affected. ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE EXTRA BUDGET, NOT REQUIRED

7. Any other good and cheap hdmi speaker cable suggestions? MANY AVAIL ON EBAY

8. Any other HTIB or AVR + speakers less than 50k? I know there exists none, still any suggestion TRY FOR ANY AVR FROM MARANTZ/DENON/ONKYO + ANY GOOD 5.1 SPEAKER SYSTEM

9. Onkyo does not show 24p support, dont know whether its going to be a problem NOT REALLY

10. Any other TV suggestion? ALSO LOOK AT PLASMA.........MUCH CHEAPER!!!

16FT IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR EVEN A 60INCH. ALWAYS GO FOR THE BIGGEST SIZE YOUR BUDGET PERMITS. FOR HD YOU NEED TO SIT CLOSER IF YOU WANT TO REALLY ENJOY 1080p. FOR SD YOU CAN SIT FARTHER AWAY. FYI here is the calculation for 42inches:
TV size : 42inches
max recommended viewing distance : 15.8ft
max SMPTE viewing distance (30 deg viewing angle) : 5.7ft
max THX viewing distance (26 deg viewing angle) : 6.6ft
Recommended THX viewing distance (36 deg viewing angle) : 4.7ft

for 16 ft u shd try projectors..hehe.but if budget is tight u can also diy a projector OR buy cheap 25k led powerd(decent at 70 inch) projectors..readily avilable in e bay india.
or panny 50 inch plasmas..65 inch are too too expensive.

Hi Aakash,

Your suggestions are really great.

Need some help in setting up my home theatre:

I have 46" Samsung LED and had Philips home theatre...but the sound is no more working though the speakers are fine and the player works but sound output is not there anymore.

I was planning to buy LG BH9530 and then read lot of articles on home theatre. I am now thinking to set up:

Denon 2313ci from US
JBL ES90 standing front speakers
Jamo C60 surround speakers.
JBL Studio2 Series Sub Woofer
JBL ES25C centre speaker
Pioneer or Sony or LG 3d Blue ray player.

Any suggestion or changes you would like me to make. My distance to TV is 22feet.

Thank you in advance.

Try considering used stuff also. You might find good deals especially for AVRs and speakers.

11. Will Onkyo play apple lossless from ipod?
If not connect the ipod via 3.5 headphone jack to Onkyo AUX in.

12. Will PS3 play back apple lossless or flac?

The PS3 supports ATRAC, MP3, AAC, WAV (LPCM) & WMA in regards to audio files.

However, it doesn't support AAL (ATRAC Lossless), Apple Lossless doesn't work, WMA Lossless doesn't work.

WAV is the only option (and with exception to FLAC, which PS3 doesn't support) that would be my preferred option over all the others.

However, WAV doesn't support ID Tags which means I'd be stuck with anything lossless in an "unknown" folder with just a filename each.
