Onkyo 705 vs Yamaha 663 vs yamaha 863

hi

i did some searching for a mid-level AVR and came up with these two models.

I chose 705 above 606.

And yamaha 663 over 463.

I know both Onkyo 705 and Yamaha 663 don't upscale.

MRP : Onkyo 606 36,122/-
MRP : Onkyo 705 48,400/-

MRP : Yamaha RXV-663 : 40,669/-
MRP : Yamaha RXV-863 : 63,499/-

MRP : Denon 1909 : 41,223/-
MRP : Denon AVR-2309 Rs.53,300

SO pls tell your views about these AVRs...

To make the post more complex, i would like to add Denon 1909 and 2309 as prime contenders to above AVRs.

regards

To get lots of pleasure for a small amount in any receiver and HT AV bliss.

component/HDMI input - Don't get caught otherwise as too much BS around HDMI upscaling and future proofing. Let your TV do the upscale since it is the last one in the chain and will decide on the final resolution even if you have a maha guru AVR.

720P or 1080i

Dolby Digital, DTS audio modes

pre-outs as you will connect to connect to an ext amp down the road (RCA's or unbalanced are fine balanced connection is not proven to show much difference given other components). This shoudl be your first upgrade item when you have more money down the road.

analog audio if you want to listen to high resolution PCM format.

Toslink/Coax connections

Min 85watts/ch

TV - Plasma or LCD min 42 inch, prefer 50-52.

Regular interconnects (no expensive BS here as its all snake oil for our connection purposes and lengths)
Decent bookshelves or floor stands & min 10 inch sub - 3.1 to start with and then move to 5.1 (very minimal support for 7.1 today and for atleast 3 - 5 yrs to come)

I challenge anyone who say they cannot get top quality viewing and listening pleasure with this.

--------- An AVR that meets the above should start from 18-20K

Everything else beyond this - is for upsell, just for kicks and fine tuning your experience above the standard.

Bazee,

Marsilians is spot with the pointers. In an Indian context where most living/bed rooms are our HT these are perfect and exactly what I have thought when I invested to buy a 663. My only fault was I bought a 363 disregarding and not looking for all technologies built in. Luckily, I was able to exchange for a 663, my loss being unable to look to 1909 or 606(cause these only come in my budget)

Bazee u should seriously consider Yamaha 663 but 1909 is such blanced reciever, don't you think. Iam sure I would have wanted that(my opinion and my needs)

I own onlya 24" monitore supporting 1920x1200 + PS3 for upscaling + ASUS card for tranferring from HDD without loss in quality. In fact most times, ASUS does the job and yamaha is in pure direct mode. This is again because i do not have a 5.1 for yamaha.
Anooj's rig - Based on: AMD - Usage: Office - TechEnclave Rig Gallery

See the above link for my rig. Just using only for HT. My room is small, so useless buying large speakers at the moment.

It seems the order of preference ( or top choice ) are :-

1) Denon 2309/1909
( Can anybody elaborate the diffrn betwn these two)

2) Onkyo 705/606

3) Yamaha 663

This is my personal choice without offense to anybody.

Yamaha is the best VFM(Value for money) the biggest bang for bucks.

But Denon is feature-rich with good resalability and somewhat futureproof.
It seems if anyone can afford the denon 2309, he should stick to it.
2809 again is way out of budget.

>>>>>>2309 -- 100 W/ch 1909 - 90W/ch
2309 - Audyssey dynamic volume, Rs232, pure direct mode, Component Video frequency 100hz comapred to 60HZ of 1909.

2) Onkyo 705/606

Thanks Prakasse.

I assume all the models mentioned here support PRE-out.

This is important to me.

I would like to connect a good int amp to the pre=out to enjoy stereo music separately.

Assuming I buy a PS3 or a good DVD plyr, I don't need the upscalings and many codecs.
IF i want THX only, i would have to go for 705.

So from 663 to 606 any mid=level AVR will do.

SO we narrow down the function of AVR to provide only good 5.1/7.1 ch movie sound(audio output).

>>>> best is to then have a separate int amp connected to source. why use AVR ???? It will not be the same as the source from CDP, no matter you select direct mode/pure music mode. The signals has already travelled some distance and in the AVR too passing some circuits.

Assuming I buy a PS3 or a good DVD plyr, I don't need the upscalings and many codecs.

>>> fine. I somehow believe AVR has better internal decoders for audio than the player. For upscaling the source is the best. but then you need to have HDMI separate for video and analog cables(minimum 6) to run to avr.

IF i want THX only, i would have to go for 705.

>>> 705 has only plain THX select2 certification not the select 2 plus or ultraplus certification. Also THX Loudness Plus is not available :) so why the extra money?

So from 663 to 606 any mid=level AVR will do.

SO we narrow down the function of AVR to provide only good 5.1/7.1 ch movie sound(audio output).

>>>>going by your choice(pre outs) 663 wins. Else 606 is the best VFM :)

also 606 175 W/CH at 1 khz
663 is 95 W/ch b/w 20-10khz

still i feel 606 is more powerful.

I think Denon 1909 does not have all the pre-outs, but 2309 does.

Thanks,
Sharad

Sharad and Bazee,

2309 has only sub preout.

Here is the rear view of the panel.

Website also says it has only sub pre out.

Thanks,

Guys, why are you guys looking into the ****CI versions of the receivers. These are for custom installers which I am pretty sure 99% of you guys wont be doing. Look only at the corresponding AVR versions. They are also much cheaper.
