I was laid off from my organisation, 9 months back & I'm without job since then. I was working as a Program Manager IT in a very reputed organisation. I need suggestions from forum members on the availability of online jobs, IT & non-IT. Could be offline/online/part time/full time etc.
Daily I come across WFH job adverts in newspapers asking to make money from home by doing jobs @ home like typing etc. I have read on various forums & articles in newspapers that most of these are fakes. I also feel the same. They only try to siphon money from our pocket. Is there any way to find out if the requirements are genuine? Are there any genuine jobs available online or offline which pay in a legal way?
Sitting idle is too boring & also affecting my health. Even how hard i try curtailing my expenses, my reserves are getting eroded swiftly. Till now I have tried hard to keep my audio gears intact, which I bought with help from the hifivision forum but not sure for how long. Frankly speaking, doing online or offline career enhancement sessions etc are not feasible at this moment. My updated resume is also uploaded on various job portals & I get mails which are not relevant.
After very long deliberations within myself, today I have gathered courage to pen down my situation on this forum in order to get genuine advice on WFH/Online/Part time jobs. I know this is a hardcore audio forum but I'm sure & do sincerely hope to get serious genuine advice on this topic too, besides the advice given on audio related topics on past numerous occasions & help a fellow hifivision member.

hi Friend,

You can try upwork, turing, and similar platform to get work which provides WFH.
They are genuine.

I would not put too much credibility in WFH jobs. It may be hard right now but go out there and talk to people in your industry and get real information on what the situations are in reality. Truth is that there is always a need for good people in any organization. You just need to know what kind of skill sets are needed.

I would also recommend that you always keep updating your skill sets. Skills can get outdated very quickly in the IT Industry. Keeping in touch with people will give you a pulse for what is going on. You may also need to relocate to an area with better job prospects.

In the event that you are not able to get employment in the industry look at other avenues such as volunteering in reputed NGOs. Social Service is a very good way to keep yourself occupied while getting to meet people from different backgrounds. It is very important to keep a positive mindset no matter what you do and helping others is one way.

Don't give up. Keep your chin up and keep on keeping on!

Yeah I'm in regular touch with my previous organisation colleagues & friends. NGOs are a good suggestion. Thanks.

Try those things already suggested here, plus parallelly, build a website addressing issues such as "parenting" or marriage break up issues (divorce issues), tourism package deals, info related site, entertainment, healthcare/diet Counselling, gardening, exports etc... and spend some time marketing, search engine optimisation plus digital marketting, you'd be surprised to earn rewards in auto pilot mode in a few months. Just select one subject and spend some time promoting it and it would become a blessing in disguise and on hindsight, you'd think the jobless time was the seed to this opportunity. Optimism, never give up will power and conviction is all it takes. You can cash in on your idea as, in life all ideas if nurtured reaps rewards.

There are some very good suggestions given above. Regarding WFH advertisements, the minute the call center person asks you to invest in any kind of scheme involving great returns then it is a red flag & you should quickly get out of it since they have to pay you for your expertise & not take money from you.
All the best, keep trying with a positive attitude & pls try to expand your network with the right people in the industry.

Try reputed contract job companies. The few that I have used are
1. GLG
2. Catalant
3. Upwork
4. Bolster

I would stay away with anyone who contacts in whatsapp or puts a TV or linkedin ad of WFH.

Be open to pro bono assignments in companies which are small and cannot afford a good quality PM. Helps you from boredom, and shows well in your CV. Get into value based consulting, do pro bono first then charge if they see value (freemium :).

Unfortunately, with mid to senior folks in IT, while there is a lot of demand, there is huge oversupply due to layoffs.

Dont discount spending on your resume, through professional agencies. Make sure your resume reads well in ATS tools as with huge volumes, people are using the same to screen resumes. Use tools like topresume or jobscan to see how well your resume reads.

Been on the same boat for the last four months, these are my learning from the same.

Hope this helps.

Have you considered offering training courses in your area of specialisation? I do not know your specific role in IT, but I have come across people becoming freelance trainers or joining a company that provides training to individuals or to corporates, or even part time consulting. You could consider becoming one until you find a stable employment. In my company, there was a huge and long presence of freelance trainers in the area of SAFE Agile and DevSecOps a few years ago (much of their contract has ended now). I am sure there are other companies that need such trainers. I have also seen such trainers go on to create their own startups catering to corporate training. Post pandemic, trainings are increasingly being delivered online cutting down the need to travel or be located in a specific city.

The question, I agree, is how to get that initial break. As many have pointed out here, networking is a critical platform that can increase your odds of getting one.

As others have suggested, please keep upskilling.
Some suggestions
- Start writing about your experiences as a program manager, put your thoughts out there. I know some of us are uncomfortable doing this, but try it anyway. You can do this on your own blog (you can start one for free on medium, substack and other platforms) or on LinkedIn.
- Make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated. You need to stand out from other candidates.
- Be more active on professional networks
- Can you collect your previous experience into an online course or courses? There are plenty of platforms where you can sell this (gumroad, teachable, maven).

Not all of these might apply to you, you can consider the ones that do.

Please also remember to focus on physical and mental health, and socialize.

Firstly think of some value added info website on a major subject that would see many converge and flock to your site. It could be even something like good parenting basics or something like that. Just go to godaddy and see if you get a dot com or dot in domain. Build up a site and market it like they cant miss it. You would open up a passive income gate.

With all due respect this kind of advice is very problematic. Asking someone to moonlight as an expert on something they have no idea about is simply absurd. I know what you mean, but getting into topics like "parenting" or "divorce" just so you can click bait some poor soul to help yourself learn about something is extremely poor taste!

Please see my comment above. Trying to learn something off the internet is not the way to go.

This forum is a prime example. You can spend a ton of time on here and perhaps learn something about Audio or Home Theater. But if you think you can go out there and pretend to be an expert based on what you learn from your time on here is a big mistake.

What is absurd? What if he is qualified on that? It is not limited to that and those are just examples. He could have expertise in some field. Only he can tell. The idea is a concept and to promote it. Forget about parenting or divorce. It is an xyz idea.

Yes Nikhil. What Donivlapog mentioned is an example. I got the idea what he meant. He tried telling me that I should create a website or some blog based upon my expertise.
@Nikhil you’re also correct in highlighting the fact that one should not enter into a domain without knowledge and experience.
In fact both of you are correct.

Don't lose hope and maintain positive attitude. After 35-40 age it is common to be laid off. Lot of good ideas to try here. The fact that you ventured out here to seek help is a good first step (among other steps you may have already taken). Cast your net wide. Consulting on your area of expertise for smaller organizations is a good step to keep yourself busy or eventually becoming a freelancer or even starting your own company.
