Most airlines accept 40" LCD/LED due to less size and weight. Such a TV can be checked in as accompanied baggage and not even charged if the total checked in weight does not exceed (read this as no other checked in bag).
But Airlines will not accept a 42" plasma also because the gross weight is nearly 30 kg. For a 50" plasma, the gross weight and the size is even more, nearly 37 kg. But they will accept it on payment of fees for excess/oversized baggage. Assuming that 12kg excess baggage, Emirates airline will charge as follows:
- pre-booked online rate for 10kg to 15 kg: AED 660
- at the airport: AED 55 per kg

Assuming AED 500, the added cost is INR 7500. But there is a real danger that airline may refuse it under the pretext of being oversized equipment. In that case you may be charged full baggage rate for entire weight.
Secondly airlines take responsibility of loss of baggage. For damages, claims have to be filed. This could be a long and tedious process.
Next is customs. Customs will charge duty as follows:
assuming accompanied baggage:
- provided that there are no other "dutiable" goods, TV is purchased at 65K, then value as per customs = base value Rs. 65000 + freight/forwarding charges Rs. 7800 (@12%) - Rs. 35000 (duty free allowance) = Rs. 37800
- duty @35% plus 3% cess = Rs. 13627
Your landed cost = Rs. 65,000 + Rs. 7,500 + Rs. 13,627 = Rs. 86,127.
assuming unaccompanied baggage:
- provided that there are no other "dutiable" goods, TV is purchased at 65K, then value as per customs = base value Rs. 65000 + freight/forwarding charges Rs. 7800 (@12%)= Rs. 72800
- duty @35% plus 3% cess = Rs. 26245.
Your landed cost = Rs. 65,000 + Rs. 7,500 + Rs. 26,245 = Rs. 98,745.
And note that customs may use their own valuation of the TV and refuse your value.
Admittedly this is cheaper than Rs. 120,000 but you will be without warranty.
Basically, it is choice between risk and money saved.
