ReBangalore DIY workshop?

Ok here's a last and final change-something has come up that means that the date is for the last and final time to be shifted to Dec 11th.

Raghu if you dont mind, could you let us know if we can get the hall allotted for Dec 11th?

It also gives everyone who wants to come from out of town an extra week to plan and make bookings. It also gives the volunteers who are making presentations a little more time to tune up their presentations

Introductions/Presentations will be made ( assuming nothing unexpected turns up)by the following four volunteers:

Anilva
T Antony
Sunil
GeorgeO

All of us have experience with building and owning multiple types of speakers, so we will be able to share and offer the benefits of our experience, insights into do's and don'ts, costs, benefits etc. It is planned to be practical and hands on, with samples of components being displayed.

Cheers

Thanks guys. Will there be a demo of basic concepts like thiel small parameters and how to use WinISD along with practical advice like what types of nuts to use, how to mount flush against baffle, how to avoid internal reflections, how to seal the enclosure with sample materials brought along like glass wool or felt etc.?

Actually a sample WIP TL or Horn speaker all panels unglued to show how it can be put together would be nice.

Yeah right! Horns? You most be joking. No correction, you are joking, right? We definitely plan to bring one or two builds and show the innards.

Personally I dont consider measuring T/S parameters to be "basic",because using them requires both advanced knowledge and software, especially for 2/3 ways. While a limited number of us may have access to gear to measure T/S params most people don't.

Good speaker design packages like LEAP are also not easily available. Yes we definitely plan to cover some of the areas that you mentioned, why not wait for the draft agenda to be posted? It's being circulated as we speak and hopefully by the end of the week or early next week we will post it.

Horn /TL - maybe we can chat up while we're there. Making it part of this discussion might be overkill.

I'll try to help, let me know what you want to try.

Oh ... I didn't realize Horn was such a BIG word ...:ohyeah: I just threw it in casually in my mix of words ... :D

I have no requirements for a Horn thank you ... not another one ;)

Rahul,

Measuring the TS params is possible with a pc sound card using a simple jig made with couple of jacks, hookup wires, a resistor and a software like Arta. Some pics of a jig I made are available at this post - http://www.hifivision.com/diy/12938-new-joinee-diy-arena-8.html#post189165. A software like winisd or speaker workshop is definitely a good start to begin the journey of simulations, but going behind the realms of generic simulations require deeper understanding of the underlying physics, which as George pointed out can't be considered as basic. My understanding on these are limited as I am still learning... but I will be glad to share what I know.

BTW I will bring the jig you see in the above post and if time permits we can have a demo as well.

Re: Bangalore DIY workshop?

Hi George,

I'll finalise travel arrangements for 11th December 2011 according to your recent post.

Is there likely to be some discussion on rebuilding/upgrading turntables also? Many members have taken up such projects. There is also a renewed interest in vinyl.

Regards.

Sunday is best for everyone, sine it is universally an off day.

Miroflex: I think you can meet and talk to people at the session, who may be able to shed light on your area of interest. The session itself is only for half a day, I am sure you can network and meet people. As of now all four people making presentations are ok with 11th, so you can assume that that date is frozen.

Update:

We have more or less firmed up the format and subjects, and plan for a meeting of the folks presenting the sessions early next week-this weekend didn't pan out. Hopefully once it is done, and things are firmed up a bit more, we can post another update.

Ok so here's the latest:

Four of us met up yesterday and have firmed up the presentations for the workshop.

Time: Around 10AM on Sunday morning Dec 11th and end around 1.1.15
Venue: Anutone office, Indiranagar

Three presentations of 30 mins followed by 15 mins of Q & A.

A DIY speaker basics-an overview
B DIY speaker building a tutorial
C DIY subwoofers-a tutorial

Opportunity to meet informally and network during breaks.

The final agenda, in a little more detail will be posted later today after final editing.

Block off your appointment books and BE THERE!!

Thanks George,

I'll be there. Could you please post directions for reaching the place from some nearby landmark (e.g. take road in front of 'X' building, first right turn etc.) for the guidance of outsiders like me?

Looking forward to a memorable and interactive workshop.

Regards.

Raghu will post both directions and address on this thread. It would be helpful for Raghu ( since Anutone is hosting us) to get an idea of the numbers,so could those who plan to attend the workshop PM him?

Thanks

Summing up

In case anyone attending has any suggestions to improve the presentations, please do let us know, wherever possible we will try and incorporate these.

The subwoofer session is also of 30 mins duration.

We are trying to come up with some interesting initiatives, but those are not yet firm, will let people know only when/if anything concrete evolves.

Cheers

I will be there.

I am still a newbie with only some 4 builds under my belt as of now, but please do let me know if I can help in anyway.

I am planning to attend this workshop. Are there plans to cover some basics on using enclosure design software like WinISD? If not, will it be helpful for newbies to be introduced to it?

Thanks
