Sam, didn't someone warn you about light colored ceiling? I guess it is too late now but you can minimize ambient light by going for dark colored walls and carpet at least.

what warning u talking about for light colored ceiling?, if you are talking about reflection from the projector screen, the black colored ceiling will reflect much more light off the screen than white color ceiling, when the light are completely turned off.

and yes the walls are dark chocolate colored carpeted, except the front screen wall that would be dark chocolate colored painted.

Sam,

the black colored ceiling will reflect projector light, but white will reflect a lot more. prepared to see the top of your projector screen slightly washed off. you will notice it in darker scenes.

If you want to absorb all the light, you need to use Velvet. Just informing.

How is that even possible, ??? a white surface reflecting white light ... anyway will see.....

Reflection is not dependent on source color of light. Black color will reflect least of light, white will reflect the most.

Yes white reflects the most but against a dark color. White color would not reflect against a white color surface. (atleast not that much.).

Not necessarily velvet, but you can try to darken the walls, atleast couple of feet from the screen. Velvet will absorb the most. If you put velvet all around the screen and for 3 ft from screen on all the walls, it will absorb all the light and give you an impression of floating image in front of you.

side walls are already being carpeted, plus the left wall has the exit door occupying 3 feets, that would have heavy curtain ....... floor is also carpeted, only left is the ceiling ..... will see if that creates a problem, I feel it should not .......

Light reflects off the screen and then if there is a light colored surface in the room (like ceiling), it reflects that ambient light back into the room. The result will be a room where you can read a book when movie is running. The picture on your screen looks washed out and dull. It will be more like watching a movie with the lights on.
The only surface in the room that should reflect light must be the screen. Other surfaces must reflect as little as possible.
I had this issue in my room (still have to some extent) and it is lot better after painting my ceiling dark.

Totally agree to Sash and Manoj.

For my HT room, I have used black colored matte finish acoustic false ceiling and the first half of my room (screen side) has black colored paneling on side walls. The remaining half is dark red. The flooring is dark colored matte finish wooden flooring. Before I did the false ceiling and side walls with black color, I tried a test projection with white walls and ceiling and the room did lit up as Sash mentioned as the light from projector got reflected from the screen wall and then from ceiling and side walls.

as I said the walls and the floor are all dark chocolate colored carpeted, so there should not be any reflection off the side walls and floor. Coming to ceiling, well its done now. I still feel it should not reflect bright white light off the screen coz

1. white ceiling should not reflect white light
2. the ceiling boards are sand/grain finish off white, that should minimize the reflection.

It it still poses a big problem, will the get the boards painted black .....we will see..

Did you carpet the wall as well? That is giving me some idea to decorate my room to reduce the boomy sound I am hearing. Which material you use and where did you procure it from?

I have not yet, but thats the plan ..... I am not sure about the material, but I went to my local area (ghaziabad) carpet dealer, and chose the color. Quality starts from 10 rs pqf to 100 rs psf plus labor separate. (7-10 rs psf)

That will only diffuse the reflection and still it will reflect lights in all directions and make the ambient lighter. You need something to absorb the light and only darker paints can do that.

One thing to note here is that carpets are dust magnets :). Unless you are staying in some place where you have total control over the dust, then carpets are good option.

Again if you have small kids, then I don't have to say much about the fate of your floor carpets :).

In Bangalore, carpets are a strict NO-NO unless you have some one to vacuum the entire carpets once every 2-3 days :).

Even I wanted to carpet my whole floor and then stayed away from it due to the maintenance night mare. But I did put a 3' wide thick rug across the entire breadth of the room at the first reflection point of my front speakers measured from the primary seating location.

Just my 2 cents.
