Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Hi Guys, i need little help... need to decide if i should go for wd player or not..

I have 32" Hd-Ready Lcd(LG)... i have big collection of sd divx movies. I wanted to know how they will play with wd? I wanted to know how good is Hd upscaling of SD content? It's upscaling is good so that i will see noticeable difference? Right now i am playing them with my divx dvd player without hd upscaling feature.. upscaling is done by lcd.. and some of the movies with lower bitrate look bad.

pls let me know.... thanks..

WD can upscale SD decently with good edges. There was comparison posted by MBR with oppo player & we cld see WD was doing best with DVDs & coming very close to Oppo.
It plays Divx too,So you can consider it.

WD TV is very close in up[scaling and WD Live would be slightly better bcos of a better chipset.

Illusion: I am using Maxtor 1 TB for one year without any hassles.

Does WD Tive live really have a better chipset ? I thought it was using the same chipset but with some networking features as an addon !

Yes I know . DO you use the 1 TB external regularly. I too had bought a 1 TB maxtor basic following your advice but had to get it replaced within a week as they had developed bad sectors. But no worries they gave me a brand new upgraded Maxtor 1 TB plus with firewire ports . Also what do you think of the idea as quoted in the post below :-

Hi Needed some advice here.

I need more storage and I am not reallysure whether I should buy those external hdd's anymore . There has been many a case where the external casing fails of the HDD with the HDD being perfectly ok in the inside/ Breaking open the case and extracting the HDD voids your warranty. Hence I was thinking of going for an HDD Docking Station spmething like this :-

Amazon.com: Thermaltake BlacX Duet USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST0014U: Electronics

and adding Internal HDD's as and when required. This way it works out to be cheaper as well as occupies lesser desk space. What say all ?

Edit: Also I wonder whether the dock will be recognized by wd tv !!

What do u think of the HDD Dock . After buying this dock I plan to keep adding Internal HDD's as and when required ! However do u think there would be any compatibility issues between the dock and the wd tv ?

WD Live uses a more powerful Sigma 8655 (old WD uses 8635) which is more powerful and has better audio qualities and is supposed to be better than the RealTek used in Xtreamer. I havent not checked it but this is what I heard from my friends in US who is having both.

I think WD might not have compatibility issue as it works with SUB enclosed hard drives also. But you never know with these things until and unless we check :)

thanks a lot guys for link :clapping:

unfortunately there is no analysis for divx sd video which i am going to play, not dvd vob files:sad:. Because resolution for these divx files go down to 620x250 also... my lcd does bad job with these... that is my main concern. I guess wd will be good enough for me....

Hmm true true, I plan to write an email to Thermaltake guys on this and ask them directly.

Better video makes it worth buying but better audio is again not required as I simply pass thru the audio stream to my avr. However I am feeling that my WD TV is outdated already . Moreover why no new updates for WD TV V1 anymore? Thats sounds a bit unfair to me.

Just read your post, what is the prob with WD?Sound or video?

No problems as such, I was just wondering whether HDD docking Stations will work with WD TV. HDD docking stations are much scalable as compared to buying external Hard Drives as well as cost effective too.

How will you connect Dock to WD OR talking abt different Device?
I know abt Sata HDD dock.

I think he is talking about sata dock only, which come with e sata and usb port.
Probably u can connect the usb port to WDTV and it may work. Don't know if anyone has tried the same and wether it will work or not

This is what I am talking about :-

So any idea whether this is worth going for ?

Answering my own question here. Did a bit of research and came across a review of the product posted in New Egg. This guy is using this dock along with a 1 TB + 2 TB WD Green dock connected to his WD TV Live and he has confirmed it works fine . Whatever works for WD TV Live should also work for WD TV gen 1 as far as storage is concerned . Hence decided to go for it. Also an Internal 1 TB (WD Green hdd) is available for Rs 4300 with my local dealer. Going for that too once I am back to Kolkata from my Hyderabad Trip . But alas that wont be until Feb next year :( !
