Have been using a set of Wharfedale 9.1s along with a Yamaha RXV-663 for sometime and recently, mainly using only the fronts alone as extension of TV speakers for parents, as I am mostly away.Came home today and heard heavy distortion from the speakers when watching, came over and this is what I found on inspection.

The same is with 3 of the 4 speakers, the drivers are torn.Even one that was being used as surround has torn like this. These were never driven hard, and is setup at the main hall where parents watch TV, so no question of going above -30 in the AVR.

Can these be easily fixed ? Or is throwing away the only option? Am extremely noob with repair and component stuff, hence asking the gurus here.

Thanx a million in advance for any sort of help....

Ah, didn't notice others were also facing similar issues... hoping to resolve this with the surround foam change by a service guy.

Its quite simple to fix the rubber surrounds. You need a resin based glue to fix it. Lot of videos are there on youtube showing how to do it.. check them out.

Thanx a lot bro...But how easy is it to obtain quality surround foam locally? Also, sound quality will remain as good as the original ?

Called up a local dealer and he said there was very little chance the rubber foam would tear like tat in a Wharfedale as it is some Butyl rubber material(if I heard him right). He has agreed to replace the foam :) :) and will be taking all 3 speakers to him tomorrow or day after.

Really hoping the problem would get solved perfectly, as I have a special attachment to these speakers, being my first ever purchase on my foray into the HiFi world.

Will keep the thread updated on how it all goes, for anyone who might be facing the same problem.

PS: I have a slight feeling that high ambient temp might be the culprit. In both locations(main hall and the upstairs hall) that this happened, ambient temps can get very high during summer, when the house is closed down , to around 38-40C. Maybe , just maybe, this could be the reason?

I'm not facing the problem yet but am planning to buy a 2yr old 9.6 from another fm here soon. Good to know the rubber used is of high quality acc to your dealer (as I was afraid it was happening coz of low quality stuff used for rubber foam). How much is it going to cost you for the repair btw? And yes, do keep us updated about how it works out for you :)

I will be going there tomorrow and will update you of the estimated cost accordingly , bro.

Were you using any bungs for the bass ports?

Absolutely not....always used as it is. These first performed as HT for movies and gaming and later, moved the front pair downstairs for TV watching by parents. It is this pair that I noticed distortion last week and found the tear, later when I went upstairs and searched the idle surround pair, one of them also had the problem.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
