Which DTH HD provider should i go for?

Ts does not have zee hd channels.

TS does have Zee HD. It does not have Zee Movies HD. TS has the following HD channels:
- Star Plus HD, pseudo 5.1 sound
- Star World HD, true 5.1 sound in most shows
- Star Gold HD, true 5.1 sound
- Star Movies HD, true 5.1 sound
- Sony HD, pseudo 5.1 sound
- Zee HD, pseudo 5.1 sound
- ESPN HD, surround sound (cannot say whether true or pseudo)
- Star Cricket HD, surround sound (cannot say whether true or pseudo)
- NatGeo HD, pseudo 5.1 sound
- Discovery HD, surround sound (cannot say whether true or pseudo)

As regards to 5.1 sound, I really don't care but others might. I rarely watch movies on TV. My movie collection is enough for that.

But TS service is extremely good. I can only compare with DishTV on this front but here it is:
  • When I shifted to TS (from DishTV) the transition was smooth but that is expected because they would be eager to acquire a new customer.
  • TS is sending me regular monthly statements which DishTV never sent. I cannot compare with others but do check on this.
  • This was my first monsoon with TS. Never faced rain outage which was always a case with DishTV.
  • I never faced problems with DishTV either but I felt that their website was pathetic and not up to the mark.
  • When I purchased my TV, I wanted to shift the cable/STB to bedroom. I called TS the earlier day. They asked me when they should send a person and the person was ringing my doorbell at the specified time.

My brother booked a Tatasky HD and I booked Airtel HD today. We both booked online and what do you know Tatasky has been installed at his home but I am waiting for the installation from Airtel as they said it would take 24hrs to 48 hrs for installation to commence. No doubt Tatasky has excellent customer support. Well hope Airtel installs soon at my place. Does Airtel install it in 24 hrs or is it going to be a long wait and multiple phone calls to remind them?

Tata Sky is more established and hence will have better network of engineers. That said if Airtel said 24 to 48 hours and time had not elapsed then they are still with SLA.

I too preferred TataSky over others and went for the HD connection. I booked the previous day and got the connection the next day and the TV was with the reception by afternoon.

The installation guys took all the trouble to lay down the cables from the terrace (6th floor) to my flat in 2nd floor for 4 connections at different rooms and never charged a single pie.
The cables were well fixed to the side of the walls on the terrace so that no one could trip or the cables be cut off. There were antennas of airtel as well as dish and their cables were just lying on the terrace floor left unattended.
Seeing theirs I felt that these people did a very good job and took their time to finish it properly. They even put casings inside my flat for routing the cables. Now, this is called customer service.

Even after knowing that TataSky was providing less number of HD channels I selected and I'm happy.
Maybe, sometime in the future they would increase the number of HD channels and then it would be even great.

They were supposed to send SMS for the online payment they received. When contacted they were not able to provide any answer. Seems like I should have gone through with the dealer network instead of making online payment. Also Airtel seems to control everything through their call center and don't seem to be having any regional office in Chennai except in Bangalore.

it seems from the suggestions that videocon is the one for me. i hope it's service(tv reception + customer service) is good. what is the experience of you all?

I have been using videocon d2h for last 2 years, yesterday upgraded to hd .It is the cheapset hd provider with more hd channels.
Picture quality is good.
Customers service is not that great.Overall value for money.

They installed it today. No problem with the installation though the technicans did not know anything about connecting the HDMI setup through my Onkyo AVR. It was done in around 45 minutes but the activation took more than an hour. Also added some regional channesl through their call center and was added immediately. Overall the service is good. The quality of HD channels are exceptionally good and SD channels are ok but not very great as I think my cable settop box had more clarity. I have problem with audio out as I am not getting the dolby digital from my AVR. I think there is a seperate post for airtel 5.1 audio. I shall post it there.

congrats and possibly you will not need to call them again, you can maintain your account online and add remove channels from there, sometime it can be very slow though.

for 5.1 run an optical cable from the STB to the AVR.

Did your old cable set top box has AV out or Component out ? I am considering to go for DTH from cable. But if there is not that much improvement in SD channels, wonder how much it will benefit. Bulk of the channels which I view is still SD only.

My cable settop box had both AV and component out. If you would like to watch only SD channels the cable settop box would do just fine. Infact the SD channels are very clear in cable settop box than the DTH. I only installed DTH for HD channels. Another advantage with cable Settop box is it does not have any disruption during rain. I am using both the DTH and cable settop box now.

+1 with Madan. If you are going for SD, a cable STB is a better option and provides more clarity than DTH. Please stick with it.

I also recently moved to Airtel HD and very happy HD channels, but SD is real pain.

i spoke to the airtel guy regarding the 5.1 output and he informed that he will come with the optical cable today.

It's weird! Given then Videocon DTH is far superior in its technology to Tata Sky, they still don't offer 5.1.
Chances are that after going HD you may soon want to experience 5.1 surround sound. My suggestions is to go for Tata sky. Their HD package is competitive and then you can add SD channels as a la carta. This works best for me, as i hardly view any SD and my monthly bill comes to Rs200. :yahoo:

So far so good, but with the new regulation which will be implemented on 8th Oct you won't be able to enjoy such a freedom while watching HD. You need to have all the SD version of the channel to watch HD.

Tatasky will now charge HD access fee instead of HD pack.
