Yamaha & Mission: clearance sale

It depends on the group buy price quoted for
a) MV8 FS
b) M34i FS
c) MV8 package ( MV8 FS, MV-C, MV-DS BS, MS-8 Sub)

So I wanted to see/hear for myself how the missions compared to the
similarly priced wharfs, polks so I dragged my a** out to see the
famous wharfs, polks, dalis, paradigms and the missions for the very
first time.

Before I left, I burnt a CD with few mp3 so that I can use that as a
reference in different setups.

First stop was at the missions. Sound & vision had the mission mv8
towers along with the mv centre and the ms-8 sub. The sub was box
packed though. First impression is that the mission mv8 towers and
the mv centre are very well built. Heavy wood enclosing and good
looking as well. The towers and centre are pretty huge when compared
to the diminutive Bose AM satellites that I have at home.

I was not interested in the whole package and wanted to hear the
towers only. They connected the mv8 to something called audiohall
CD player and stereo ampilifer. They said they are very high end.
Anyways the cd player did not play my mp3 CD and I had them change
it to a mass market DVD player.

I had the following songs
1 - Aaoromale ( from vinnaithandi varuvaaya ) to hear the guitar
2 - Guzarish (from Ghajini) to hear the bass/vocals
3 - Mudhal mazahi Enai (from Bheema) for the bass/vocals etc

Anyways the guitar sounds came very well and the vocals were good.
MV8 lacks bass. At lower volumes bass might seem to be OK but when
the volume is increased it clearly shows that it does not have the
thump that you might need. So anyone wanting to buy the MV8 towers
alone - think again. If you have a sub already at home, it is fine,
without a sub you will definitely feel lot lacking. Also it did
little bit harsh (wouldnt say too bright or forward but little bit
harsh - but tolerable). It also sounded a little tinny at times.
To sum up, the MV8 for music sounded average at best.

If you want to buy just the towers for music, you are better off
buying something else. The whole package with the sub etc is a much
better option.

Also even if you are ready to spend about 12 - 15k, and if your
primary requirement is music, you are better of with say wharf 9.1
or 9.2.

All that said, for 20k the entire package would be a killer deal
(ofcourse compromise on music). Even at 24k it is still a very
good deal, so if you are looking for a good entry level HT speakers
with the looks etc and if the group buy for less does not work out
you must seriously consider the MV8 package. I am sure it will not
disappoint you provided you dont keep your expectations way too
high. I am sure you will be mighty happy just looking at the size
and build of the towers, sub, centre (rears I did not see).

They also had the paradigm atoms BS which sounded much better with
better bass than the MV8 but these are priced at 23k and not in
my budget.

Next stop was for the Polks. I wanted to audition the Polk Tsi 200.
They did not have the Tsi 200 but had the RTA 3 and Tsi 300 MRP at
22k and 21k. RTA series are higher end compared to Tsi. RTA 3 is a
BS and Tsi is FS. I played the same songs again.

Both the polks sounded better than the MV8. Contrary to what we
keep hearing in HFV that BS would sound better than a FS at the
same price range, I felt the Tsi 300 FS sounded better than the
RTA 3 BS inspite of being at a lower end compared to the RTA series.
The shop owner also agreed that FS are normally better than BS and
that he always recommends FS as fronts for his customers.

Anyways I was might impressed with the polk tsi 300 (when compared
to MV8 towers). The tsi pumps out good bass and does not need another
sub to go with it. The details etc and soundstage was very good.
Seeing that I am impressed, the shop owner played Hotel California
in lossless form and that brought a smile on my face. He then said
he could see that lot of details missing due the mp3 compression
in the songs that I had taken with me. Very true.

He is ready to give the Polk Tsi 300 at 18.5k. So between the towers
the Polk Tsi 300 IMO wins hands down. So IMO one should buy the
MV8 towers only if it is offered for say around 14k and not more than
that. Also it would need a sub definitely.

I then went to hear the wharfs. True to what many people say between
the 9.2 and 9.1, it is better to invest another 2k and buy the 9.2
than to buy the 9.1. The 9.2 though sounded very good and had good
bass.

My decision,
1 - Buy the MV8 towers only if it is available for say 12 - 13 k
2 - Buy the MV8 package only if it is available for say 18 - 19k
( since I already have a HT, I dont need another one unless it
is a killer deal like 18-19k above. However if you dont have
a HT and looking for one, it is an excellent buy even at
24k
)
3 - Buy the polk tsi 300 at 18.5k (this can wait because it is not
in any offer.

Have you tested with CDs? As testing with MP3 has too many limitations?which mass market DVd player they used?

I used the set of mp3 songs in a CD in all the three locations
but I understand that you mean I should have used a lossless
source - but I did not have one. Even the speakers that I would
buy will be used with similar mp3 at home. So in my case, I need
to make sure which speaker sounds the best for my kind of
source.

The missions were tested with samsung dvd p as the source and
a audiohall(?) stereo amp

The polks were tested with sony dvdp as source and denon avr

The wharfs were tested with yamaha cdp as source and marantz avr
or stereo amp not sure.

Right decision as you were about to use same source!

Audiohall ..never heard ,anyone can shed any light?

:clapping: nice review siva... Hope you do more auditions before you purchase :D so we get to read more reviews like this ...

Good review with comparisons... Many thanks Siva!!!

Today I was monitoring one auction on eBay India for MV-8E towers and surprisingly the auction closed for Rs.10,199 (+1499) shipping) with just 2 bids. So its probably worth Rs.10,199 or less.

But what is this MV-8E now?

Kittu - Thank you for your appreciation. I can see few people interested only/mainly
in the towers in this thread. I just wanted to make sure they set their expectations
correct and the price band in which this tower would be VFM.

I did not hear the sub (packed and they did not have one for demo). If the sub is
good then the package would be a very good deal for this price with little compromise
for music.

I dont know but I will let you know when I get it. :) Yes I won that bid/auction.
Like I said in my review above, since I have a sub I thought I could bid
up to 11 and set the max bid to 11. Fortunately or unfortunately no one
else bid and I will be paying for it.

My plan is to use this MV8 for now and move it to rears may be after
a year.

Well... Congratulations!!!:clapping:
I was really tempted to bid and almost set my bid sniper at 13K but pulled the plug 3-minutes before the auction close...Lucky you :p

Trust me I found the wharfdale 9.2 much better than the MV8. In my house
currently I am having problem with placement of satellites and BS. I am
currently having them at a height of about 8 feet and due to that the
sound/stage is pretty bad and it is for that reason I wanted a budget
FS to have the speakers at my ear level (well sort of). Since I also have
a sub to go with it, I should be OK.

I am saying this because, you said you were about to set it at 13k.
Adding the shipping of about 1.5k to it, it comes to 14.5k and the
wharf at 15k is a better option than the MV8 towers only.

That said, if anyone is particular about towers only and do not have
a sub and do not want the whole MV8 package, should audition the Polk
Tsi 300. I found it very very good. It was quoted 18.5k after discounts.
A group buy could bring the price down further.

I dont know of any other tower in the sub 20k range.

Hi folks,

Count me in for Mission Mv-8 5.1 Ch Home Theatre Tower Speaker Package group buy. if we are getting between 20-22k. including shipping to bangalore.

regards,

The ebay offer for MV-8 5.1 package @ 23,999 ends today but we don't have any further progress on the group buy. Can someone from Mumbai talk to Savoy to take things forward?

this is the best i could do:
Mission MV-8 5.1 package
for 5 orders less than 10 - Rs.22,500
for 10 orders or more - Rs.22,000
add Rs.1,000 for shipping outside Mumbai

Thank a lot Yogesh! Your help is much appreciated.

I guess it is really beneficial for Mumbai folks. For outstation folks (22,500+1,000) it is hardly Rs.490 saved when compared to the ebay offer of 23,990.

In case we have GB orders above 10, (22,000+1000) it's still Rs.990 savings for outstation folks.

What say guys? Should we still form a GB or take it via eBay (better assurance and ease of transfer of funds via Credit/Debit Card and 0% EMI options for ICICI card holders)?

I'm not sure whether we have numbers above 10 to make it worthwhile to work out further modus operandi for a GB.

I feel the ebay option is better but I'm ready for majority opinion. We need to have decisions made before today evening

unless this package comes back on ebay DOW, the price will surely go up by 6%. the advantage with ebay of course is EMI & coupons, if any.

so saving just Rs990 doesn't sound striking Group buy deal.well in that case probably i will stick to ebay which has better option of 0% 3/6 month EMI options for ICICI card holders.

Ditto Here ...
YESTERDAY AUDITIONED MV 8 AT ALLAINCE 4 ANDHERI.
The dealer treatment was good

Accompanying equipment was Cambrdge Audio Amp and Matching CD ,Bandridge Cables.

Demo Material

Taal CD

My Cds Tested
1) Hotel California - eagles ( US Minted CD)
2) Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down ( Minted In EU - Very good recording for Vocals)

( Carrying other music - did not tested)

Speakers LACKS bass ,good mids ,good vocal rendering.
But since I like bass and my source will be inferior than Cambridge Audio CD ( Pioneer 101 D changer,Laptop with DAC) so frankly not going for this..
