Watched both seasons of TV adaptation of Val Macdermid's books. A cold case has to be re-started due to a podcast and the brass assign a young, inexperienced Karen Pirie as an optic. She turns out to be fearless relentless and how she goes about solving the case.
The story is meaty, well-paced and surefooted. The purposeful Pirie, played by Outlander’s Lauren Lyle is refreshingly a non-neurotic, inwardly untortured professional, as imperfect as the next gal. Unlike in other detective portrayals she is refreshingly NOT fatally flawed, burdened by a dark personal secret or facing an addiction or family issues! The script and Lyle blend determination, confidence and charm in perfect proportions as she navigates her way through the cold case, the politics around it and the obstacles thrown up and the murderer’s desire not to get caught.
