Hi, I needed some advice. I am planning to purchase a 50" LG Plasma, either a PJ560 or 650. I am not a tech-savvy guy, and will be using the TV for primarily watching DVD movies(no ripped movies) and satellite channels through a Hathway STB. Can any of the gurus here pls let me know if these TVs are good enough for my purpose and reliable? Reading the various threads on this forum, it actually seems like buying a Plasma TV is a lottery!

What about 50pk550,a ful HD lg plasma, costs 66k,but wait for the month of August to be over,to get the firm ware updated for green/grey pixalation problems of current LG plasma

Hi

PJ series is good enough to meet ur requirements. But going for a 50'' screen size will depend on ur room size.

Thanks a lot guys, my viewing distance will be 12'. So, you are saying I should wait till September for buying any LG Plasma? Is the current problem that major even for a non-technical viewer?

The major dif between 650 and 560 is the DESIGN and SOUND. If you want better looks with medium sound, go for 650. If you want Better sound with speaker mounted on side, go for 560.

Either way.. viewing distance will decide the size you buy. for more thn 12Feet, you can go for 50'.

Anurag,

The firmware issue is only with 50PK550. I picked up a 50PJ560 just last week and it's a fantastic TV. I play all kinds of content on it - SD DTH, Airtel HD DTH, blu ray rips (720p MKVs) and DVDs. All of them look very good on the TV. Distance wise, may 12 feet would be a bit too close for a 50 inch TV. My wife and I sit at about 16 feet and the big screen experience is really nice at this distance. For 12 feet, maybe you can manage even with a 42 inch plasma.

I'd also like to mention that I don't find any defects in my panel. I have played almost all types of content (the only thing I have not tried, is connecting my laptop through HDMI for games) and I am very happy with the TV. Very nice overall picture quality, and nice colour reproduction.

You can check my thread which I posted with my complete a/v setup and links to pictures:

I can't really help you out with the TV quality, however, it'd be better if you got a 50" (as opposed to a smaller size) at 12' distance. I have my 40" at about 7-8' and I never felt it's too much.

Going by the LG website, 50PJ350 and 50PJ650 got a denser display panel compared to PJ560. 1365 x 768 compared to 1024 x 768.

As I have not audited both, would not comment on the PQ. And as per many, they dont see any difference.

If your budget permits, PK550 being FullHD is a good option. Its available for 62K here in Karnataka. And in Pune you might get it for 57K.

But out of the box sound is important for you(i.e. you do not plan to add in a AVR or HTiB), you may consider PJ560.

Thanks guys. I too noticed the same thing on the LG website, with PJ560 and PJ350 being 1024x768, and only PJ650 being 1365x768. Don't know what it means in practical, daily usage terms though, will appreciate your guidance. Also, a lot of salesmen at various shops in Bombay actually told me not to go in for the full HD pLasma as the picture is softer, full HD is 'fail in plasma' et al. I'm sure they were talking through their hats, but in the showroom, I too found the full HD plasma picture softer and less 'livelier' than that in the HD Ready one. Is there any science behind it or just a settings/mis-selling issue? Thanks once again for all the advice everyone!

Anurag,is that true, picture in FULLHD PK550 softer than in HD ready PJ560?,I had almost finalized on PK550(with out even seeing a demo, satisfied with a demo on a hd ready 50 LG),your observation is creating butterflies in the stomach!

A correction. 50PJ350 has the 1365x768 panel. As emphasis on PJ560 is for sound, it is likely that it has got a lesser denser panel. Again saying this purely based on what is in LG website.

The panels with 1024x768 has non-square pixels. They are rectangular. But I have not heard of any issue in PQ on such panels. Naively, it must affect when the TV tries to scale the pic from other resolution to match its native resolution. (The scaling factor for height will be different than its width) As the aspect ratio of 1365x768 matches with that of 1980x1080, the transformation seems more direct when compared to 1024x768. But I have not found any material so far saying it is bad. Many of the low-end Panasonic(and even Pioneer) has 1024x768 and hence I believe its not a big deal when it comes to day-to-day usage.

And I don't think that FullHD will be softer. Best thing is that you take a pic in a thumbdrive and check it yourself. Instead of checking for softness/brightness, you check whether the TV produces the satisfactory PQ for pic you have. If you are satisfied with PQ, that must be it. Similarly check for other contents like SD/HD movies and pics. I mean don't rely on just one picture.

Sorry for the 50PJ350 mistake, this model was appearing under 1365x768p instead of normal 1365x768, so missed out and assumed this too would be 1024x768. And now, I'm more confused than ever, especially since no showroom in Bombay seems to have all these models on display :) I even called up the local LG office, they confirmed that 50PJ560 is not on display anywhere in this city. Don't know how it looks, so thodi zyaada 'leap of faith' ho jayegi!

hey i really like to buy lg plasma tv..

if anyone know some more about it then please tell me

Sir,

Technically there is no difference if you go for 50" model irrespective of 350, 560, and 650. All will have same Resolution.

So check what you like in Looks.

350 - Basic
650- Borderless
560- Side mounted spker

Mehul,
R u really sure of this? Bcoz LG web site mentions 560 to have a 1024x768 panel even for 50". While same site mention 1365x768 for 50" 350.

As you own 560 you can correct me if I am wrong.
How you found out that 560 has a 1365x768 panel. Does the box has it printed?
Looks like LG has a mistake in their website.

Yeh, something wrong on the LG website. All 42" should be 1024x768p and 50" should be 1365x768p (think so).

Here is what the PDF manual reads on page 8.

"
We recommend using 1920x1080, 60 Hz(Only
50/60PK5***), 1360x768, 60 Hz(Only 50pJ3***,
50PJ5***, 50PJ6***), 1024x768, 60 Hz(Only
42PJ3***, 42PJ5***, 42PJ6***) for the PC
mode, this should provide the best picture quality.
"

Does that lead to any conclusion?

I wrote a mail to LG Service yesterday(on the address on their website), let's see if they can throw some light on this resolution issue that can lead to it's resulution!
Lots of problems with the LG website, they have name and addresses of dealers who have long shut shop, for example.
