QUAD L2 Center
QUAD 11L REAR

you may(or may not) like it better.

Thank you Sam & Popcorn.

I cant put "bookshelf" speakers in the front. The room is 22 feet wide and 16 feet front to back. The front 22 feet is a long glass of 11 feet each, divided by a pillar, overlloking a green patch. The rear, after 16 feet, is a wall that is intended to be the projection wall. A 30 inch tall cabinet, 12 feet in width is in front of the wall.

Therefore, it is a rectangular room with massive windows at one end and a flat wall on the other.

The Maranz dealer in Calcutta advised today evening not to invest in it because the principal company cannot provide after sales service; he offered Wharfedale, Modern and Cambridge instead.

The front speakers have to be towers which can be put on either side of the cabinet, as I see it.

Therefore, please tell me your final choice of units and I will hunt their dealers in Calcutta.

Sam, the utility will be movies on weekends but the opportunity of music is as much. Let me play safe by putting it 50:50 between movies and music.

Trust this helps you.

Friends, it might sound like a whine, but again, I am very grateful to you and thank you for all time that you are putting in for me.

God bless you.

Cheers!

My "sos" is because I dont have time and I have to install the final piece quickly. I have been reading up as much as I could but my ignorance about the finer aspects of this domain brought me here.

Hence, please help.

....

being honest here. This is not possible and your approach is recipe for discontentment and wonder (in a negative way). You will soon be on an upgrade path along with loss of value rupees-wise.

I suggest to not buy anything in a rush unless you have heard enough to go for the purchases.

As many others have said, go and listen as its a time wisely spent in this hobby.

Folks, am I thrilled!!!?

Guys, after spending two whole days across five different "music rooms" all through the city, allow me to sound like a G-U-R-U...just like you!!!!!!:p

...jokes aside, who needs an AVR?!

I felt so different when the same CD was played via a "Class A" amplifier. It sounded not just beautiful, it I could really F-E-E-L it. Therefore, my first learning is no AVR, but a 2.1 channel with a class A amplifier should be invested for music. By the way the amplifier I am raving about was a Sudgen Maestro; I forget the serial number.

While I have been firm about the Quad speakers, I heard a set of two towers called Totem. They are from Canada. Guys, they sounded really good; ofcourse I dont know about the technical stuff between Quad & Totem, but if you will please educate me on this.

Finally, cambridge audio has these small speakers, 5.1 ofcourse, that are called Minx. These are almost like the Bose speakers and these could be put in place for the AV/movies bit. In sum, class A and 2.1 for music; and the MINX tiny ones for movies with an AVR like Yamaha 671.

I really feel thrilled to write so much as if I know that much!!!

I MUST THANK YOU GUYS FOR PUSHING ME, TEACHING ME, SHARING WITH ME AND FINALLY HELPING ME TO COME TO SOME CONCLUSION.

Now feel free to chew up all that I said and give me something better.

Cheers!!!!!

wow youve really done some listening!!!

totems supposed to be really good, havent heard them though.

i agree with you on separate ht and stereo setups.

if i were in my parents shoes 10 years ago, i would have probably done the same.

Popcorn, please advise me between quad & totem; the former seems to be the only one that kills eletrostatic; how important is that in selecting a pair of speakers? do i still need to add a sub woofer for the music piece? if yes, is a super cube appropriate?

Sam, Marsilians & Myriad may i get your advise too, please?

moks! good you learnt pretty fast :)
Sugden is a very good amp.
Which Quad & Totem you heard with Sugden. I know SKS deals in Quad and Sugden . Who deals in Totem?

i seriously dont know about totem, and im not to good with specs either.
better ask the other guys.

unless your really far away from the speakers, i dont think a sub will be needed with tower speakers(for music, atleast)

could you also share some prices and models? ill be looking for nice speakers soon myself...

cheers

Myriad, thank you for that pretty lofty compliment!

SKS stocks Totem in Calcutta.

My fundamental observation is that if one really invests in a class A amplifier, then it is a waste to buy two way speakers; instead, I feel, one shopuld really get into full range speakers and nothing else. Do you agree? If you do, with my (very) limited knowlege in these five days, I reckon one is looking at a "low" priced Audio Nirvana or a "high" value Lowther.

Between the two, I am informed Lowther takes the cake fully.

I am further informed that Lowther is not sold in Calcutta. Can you help with the name of a dealer anywhere in this country for Lowther? And is Lowther always a DIY kit or do they sell finished, complete speaker boxes?

An observation: SKS's acquisition of the speakers seems to be suspect. I somehow felt that they dont import from the manufacturer first hand.

Moks,

Looks like you are progressing well! I remember you mentioning that there is a lot of glass area in close proximity to where you intend to place this system, I would say avoid the sub for the time being. Even better see if you get one on loan and check how it works in that space.

I am sorry I cant comment on the Quads or Totems, havent heard either but both are famous.

BoB, thank you!

Please advise, should one not invest in full range speakers with a Class A amplifier? Anything else, would not it be a mismatch?

Again, Lowther and Audio Nirvana seem to be the only good full range speakers, as I keep reading. Can you recommend any other name please?

Quad, I found, makes Class A amplifiers. Do they make full range speakers? whatever I saw on their website seemed to be two way and such; can you please give a firm advise on this?

Finally, where do I get Quad full range speakers and a class A amplifier of Quad too?

Cheers!

this is a very, very subjective matter.
some feel that full range speeakers arent very good at "hiding", unlike two way speakers. of course, this depeds on your preference...

trust your gut, if you feel sks is weird, get out of there!

I dont know about lowthers and other drivers, but all fostex drivers are reputed to sound better with amps with a damping factor of less than 20. Lower is better. For other speakers anything beyond 20 is good enough.

So if you are getting fullrange speakers with a very lightweight and fast single driver/cone, an amp with very low or no global feedback resulting in higher output impedance than most SS amps would be best. Edit: but if you go down this path, make sure the speakers you buy have a relatively flat impedance curve as the amp will be more reactive to the speakers impedance variations.

Actually since you just started the Hifi journey with the aspiration to buy an AVR, I don't think its a good idea to look at specs so much.

Better you buy something at midrange budget that sounds nice to your ears - one that can become a 2nd system for another room, or one you can sell off later.

Moks,

Hold your horses mate! I can understand your eagerness to have us give you a prescription such as x speakers + y amp + z source and you are all set. This is not a sound approach.

Full range drivers is an oxymoron - they dont do full range. A more accurate description would be wide-band drivers. I dont think you are really looking at full range drivers such as Lowthers or Fostex - these are for serious hardcore hobbyists. From everything I have heard so far you arent the DIY type.

So, I would recommend you stick to either floorstanders/bookshelves and a nice class A or high current mosfet stereo amp. I do not believe you will be able to deal with tubes as they are way too fiddly.

If you liked the Sugden Mystro setup, why arent you going for it? Along with Quad and Totem, you should give Tannoy and Monitor an audition. Since your budget is a little higher, consider spending atleast 60k or even higher on an integrated amp. I am not sure if there are class A integrated amps at this price point, but the Denon PMA 1500R or 2000R are terrific amps.
