Tata Sky launches Tata Sky+ HD at just Rs. 3999/

I am sorry but your supposition is wrong. The fact that the AVR displays 'PCM' and not 'Dolby Digital' is proof that the HDMI connection is not transporting the DD bitstream. If, and this will always be the case, a 'Dolby Digital' bitstream is received by the AVR, it will display 'Dolby Digital' and not 'PCM'. Irrespective of what the AVR display shows, you should be able to tell by simply listening to the audio whether you are getting DD 5.1 audio or not.
'.

My assumption is not wrong as PCM can be multichannel as well. The fact that AVR is displaying PCM can also be because of AVR not being able to understand what audio compression STB is sending (like with AAC 5.1)(irespective of what TataSky claim) ....as I said I am just assuming, which is not just like that. Also I did the experimenting with NAT GEO, I will try with Discovery HD as well and report. If there is a noticeable difference I would be happy to accept and report .....

As stated in my earlier post, HDMI is not the only option to get 1080i. In fact the TataSky HD set-top box provides a component output with 1080i resolution..

That was a relative ans just for his understanding, I know what component is ......cheezz man:rolleyes:

I have my component connected as well in incase I do not want my AVR to be running while watching TV.

Actually the supposition is wrong. PCM can be mutichannel but it cannot be Dolby Digital and the fact is that the 'two' HD channels available on 'TataSky HD' are both encoded and broadcast with DD audio. Thus if the AVR displays PCM, then the fact is that the original bitstream is not being transported to the AVR.

I cannot comment on the audio from the 'TataSky + HD' set-top box, but the DD5.1 audio from 'Discover HD World' is "noticeably different" or rather I should state, 'noticeably superior'.

If one reads your post and the original post it was made in response to, what else can one infer from your answer other than exactly what it states, which is that "HDMI is the only option to get 1080i"?
HDMI is the only way you can get 1080i. The next best option is component video which is 720.
Yea I know HDMI is the only option to get 1080i.

In any case, it is kind of impossible to read minds. Also, why would you want to reinforce the incorrect statement of the original poster?

Who said anything about PCM being DD. I just said AVR displaying PCM does not mean its not 5.1 simple ....

That why I said (what ever TataSky claims)

It should be, as I said I will check and confirm ....

Again as I said it was for him to understand, not for the people to infer, who dont know me in context to this forum.

Re: Tata Sky HD+ Hdmi Audio Problem!

Also DD+ has more bit rate and hence better sound quality than DD5.1. HDMI supports practically all audio codec and is the only standard to properly transfer HD audio and video.

@sanjay0864/@sam9s - chillout guys - your point is made and erroneous statement made on my part is acknowledged. Thanks for pointing out the same.

Turns out hdmi need not be better than component video (as far as display quality is concerned) -- DVI vs. HDMI vs. Component Video -- Which is Better? - eCoustics.com
However, not sure if the component video cables bundled with devices like dvd/bd players are capable to carrying full 1080p resolutions or some specialised high quality cables need to be purchased for the purpose.

Some other findings:

There is no option to turn off HDMI audio in the STB.

So, the only option is to connect HDMI cable to TV directly (not through AVR) and optical cable to your AVR. (is there any setting in Onkyo AVRs to disable HDMI audio?)
I also faced the same issue with my Onkyo nr-5007. Upon doing bit of further research, found the in the onkyo avr, there is an option to disable the hdmi audio. In the digital audio input assignment setup screen, I just need to select the input as optical (OPT3) and press the enter button - it changes to OPT3*, thus enabling hdmi for display only and OPT3 as audio source.

BTW, the coaxial digital output from the hd+ stb also can carry 5.1 signal.

Re: Tata Sky HD+ Hdmi Audio Problem!

7.1 will need programs created in 7.1 to be aired in 7.1 , It'll take twenty years for that to happen considering we are listening to mono NatGeo from 5 channels :).

Does anyone know whether & when TS plans to start broadcast of the Moviesnow HD channel ?

Re: Tata Sky HD+ Hdmi Audio Problem!

Same case here. Though it gives 5.1 with both optical as well as digital coaxial.

Is it confirmed that Tata Sky HD (no PVR) box gives 5.1 with HDMI? If yes, then we can take these guys to task - there is no reason why the HD+ box should not give multi-channel thru hdmi.

My HD Box (No PVR) was also not outputting DD5.1 thru HDMI. I had the HDMI connected directly to TV and coaxial out to my AVR (unfortunately it did not even have the optical out port.

Well, optical is not better than coaxial - so you are OK if you were able to use coaxial.

However, HDMI audio for all supported codecs should definitely be working - hope its a software issue that TS can resolve and NOT a hardware problem needing parts replacement!

If anyone comes to know the exact model that I have to pick for this STB when I add a device to my logitech harmony, please share. I'm still trying to find out, shall share when I come to know exact details (hopefully, its added to the logitechDB already!!)

Just use tatasky+ as the device and everything works fine (select in the pvr section though)

Order placed late Thursday night, installation done on Saturday evening - wonderful service. Recording works smoothly. Need to check the 5.1 or 7.1.
Kudos and Thanks TS.

Placed my order today and they agreed to install within 48 hours. One hour later received a call from customer care saying that stocks are not available in bangalore.

Has to wait for another 2 days.
