Tata Sky launches Tata Sky+ HD at just Rs. 3999/

:bump: 10char

if you've stayed with reliance for so long.. makes sense to continue..

i did not evaluate any other option coz I've been a TS customer since they started their biz and they've got full wiring in the building. another servie provider == more headache than I can handle..

Their email id is [email protected] and it works. Tested.

I've sent an email to Tata Sky to get them to allow Dolby Digital 5.1 through HDMI. I seriously doubt people having HDMI inputs on their AVRs would like to route audio through optical. In most cases, the AVR acts as an HDMI switcher, with the audio being output through the speakers and video through the TV. What's the sense in having HDMI if you're not going to use it for carrying both HD audio and HD video (which is why it was invented in the first place)?

Other people being affected by this, would you be kind enough to email Tata Sky regarding this? I feel the more emails they (Tata Sky) get, the quicker they will be to respond.

EDIT: I don't have their email address by the way. I just logged on to mytatasky.com and went to the My Query section and logged a query.

I don't have credit card. I read somewhere that they are also accepting debit cards. customer care refused to accept that. Any other way of payment?

Finally bought Tata Sky+ HD PVR

Dear Forum members,

I finally got Tata Sky+ HD PVR installed and connected to my Panny Plasma P42V20D... Last evening, I called Tata Sky Customer Care in Pune who offered me the new HD STB for Rs. 3999 along with mega package costing Rs. 6000 per annum at Rs. 5301 per annum. He also offered me Business Today annual subscription as a freebie. For availing this offer, I was asked to pay through credit card and had to generate an OTP for payment of Rs. 9300 through IVR mode.

I was ready with the details by today morning and finally confirmed the purchase by noon. I was informed that delivery and installation would be done in 48 hrs. Luckily, 2 personnels from Tata Sky visited my house at 5:30PM and finished the installation by 8:00PM.

I stay on the 4th floor of a 25 storey building, and had to install the dish antenna on my terrace. The total wiring was around 60 metres and therefore I had to shell out an extra 500 bucks for the additional wiring (wiring upto 24 metres is free of cost). I also had to pay extra 500 bucks for fitting a multi switch in my TV connection. In all I paid Rs. 1000 cash for the extras.

Although I have subscribed for mega package, I am now running grand package and my HD services have not been activated. The service personnel said that mega package & HD services will be activated within 24 hours.

Apparently, I am not completely happy with the picture quality. I was initially running DigiCable through the local cable operator and I thought the picture quality of that was much better compared to Tata Sky. I am not sure if this is due to the length of the wire that can cause some signal loss. Its a wait and watch game till tomorrow and I have to see how the HD quality looks like.

Will post pictures and keep you updated soon...

I too raised an issue via My query section by logging into mytatasky.com.

Re: Finally bought Tata Sky+ HD PVR

SD picture quality is sub-par on my 42" LCD as well, but expected the Plasma to fare better on SD signals.

No...the degradation in SD quality is not due to extra length. If the signal is poor, the STB wont lock in worst case and causes intermittent freezing and dropping of frames, but not degraded picture quality. The degraded picture quality is purely thanks to the higher than normal compression used by TS to accommodate more channels into the transport stream.

The HD channels are a lot better, but not as good as the HD transmissions qualities abroad. I use the same TV in India which I used to use abroad and can confirm that what is dished out as HD by TataSky leaves a lot to be desired in terms of picture quality. Download a 1080i HDTV rip of some NGHD program from the internet, play it through your media player and compare it to the so-called NG-HD channel in TataSky and you will understand the huge difference in quality.

So finally my mail did pay off ...... DELHI NCR people .... instead of banging your head with CC, drop a mail from your authorized tatasky account or ([email protected]) and soon you should get a call from the Head Office ......
Best Of Luck ....... :):):):)

Ok Delhi Guys, as promised, today TataSky technetian came with TataSky Plus HD STB and installed it. Though I am not sure about this, but he said I am the first person to get Plus HD, in Delhi NCR if not in the entire north region. Any way the installation went smoothly and was activated instantaneously. How ever the HD package was not included immidiately untill late evening. It was around 7 PM when the HD package was activated and I was much surprised to see the quality of Discover/Nat Geo HD .... ROCKING!!! amazing clarity and proper 5.1 audio. Currently only 3 channels and a showcase event is on HD. Discovery HD, Nat Geo HD, Star Plus HD, but it was clearly evident, that Discovery HD and Nat Geo HD were far far better than star plus HD, which was not even proper 16:9. Also its been confirmed that before world cup the 3 sports chanels (ESPN, Star Sports and Star Cricket)would also be added to the HD Gold pack at no extra cost (30/m)..........To conclude managed to get Plus HD installed and I am happy and impressed how TataSky (Not the CC) tackled my complain and request to get Plus HD imported from Mohali and get it installed. It was dealt pretty promptly. So to confirm once again, TataSky Plus has been installed and I am enjoying it on my LG 47" Full HD LCD and Onkyo AVR ...:yahoo::yahoo:

Some other findings:

There is no option to turn off HDMI audio in the STB.

So, the only option is to connect HDMI cable to TV directly (not through AVR) and optical cable to your AVR. (is there any setting in Onkyo AVRs to disable HDMI audio?)

I dont get you guys, whats the point of connecting HDMI directly if its only video that you would be using it for. Anyway I would like to confirm that I have connected HDMI through AVR and then from AVR to display, and I suppose I am getting 5.1 audio, the AVR shows PCM on the display ...... people with Tata Sky HD (not plus) can they confirm what does the AVR display while connected with HDMI and optical ......

thanks digitalav... that was a good piece of info... i was reading about it in the internet also.. TS uses higher compression and hence i guess SD quality is average... i am yet to check out the HD quality since my services will get activated today only...

HDMI is the only way you can get 1080i. The next best option is component video which is 720.

My Onkyo AVR shows Dolby Digital 5.1 with optical. With HDMI it shows PCM 2.0

Off Topic!!!

Apologies for the Off Topic but need some help

Can someone pls share e-maild id of higher-ups in TataSky. It's almost five days since my request for installation and nothing has moved so far.

5 complaints and e-mail to help@tatasky is not helping either.

I feel helpless and cheated

I have reduced mine to 3 secs, did you check Organizer->User Settings->Banner Settings? Maybe you are not scrolling down in the menu?

Thanks - I did find it last night, by accident: realised that there was more of the menu to be had by scrolling down.
The recording feature was fixed last night after a call to CUstomer Support- and now the icons are visible apparently There was a " conditional access" problem.
Now I only need to get my subscription issue sorted out!

Ok, booked mine via IVR on the helpline, which was an extremely pleasant experience. Their customer care has really improved big time. Also got a call back that it will be installed tomorrow.

Yea I know HDMI is the only option to get 1080i. Well any way I did some more research and connected the optical as well and though the AVR display did change to Dolby Digital, there was no audible difference in the 5.1 environment, So I am not sure if optical does do any difference apart from the fact that the AVR starts to display DD. Also with HDMI it shows PCM and not PCM 2.0 ......which is multichannel as well ......
