Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Techila,

Pune is a greedy place:mad:. Lamington rd prices are about 8000. I got it on ebay @7500.

Thank you udaji.

Actually, I'm looking for network media player just to avoid manually copying files to hard disk from PC. I think WDTV might work with USB LAN dongle connected to my old linksys router WRT54G + new Linksys WRT610N (planning to buy) + non-Official firmware.

Linksys WRT610N says it can streams music, video and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP-compatible media adapter. I'm not sure if WDTV can directly play streamed stuffs with some firmware.

Thanks

You may need USB wifi dongle. Could be supported only by cooked firmware. Streaming HD videos could be a problem for wireless b/g.

Overpriced ....??? At 100$ you are getting a High Definition Media player .

Tell me any other player you will get at this price that will play HD stuff.

.
i respect your opinion, but the device is a half the story of
a full HD player w/o HDD .i know 100$ is not a bigg price,but
itz just a card with some ports...getting early bird focus.
eg.
sony dvd player was 4999/- when launched now just half price...

we cant compare WDTV with a NMT as is does not have ethernet (in this forum ppl talked about NMT with HDD at 200$ ,seemed ok )

all know "marketing policy" changes prices more than technology innovation
my point was not to highlight the demand &supply curves ,
just to caution buyers ,just dont make a go-grab-it purchase, because soon there may be better VFM units in the same league.
-thread diversion is not intended anyway:p

Please name some more reliable VFM units in the same league if you know of any. It will help others in making their decision !

As for the Sony DVD player price falling eventually, but that is natural with all electronics ...

Agreed that WD TV is a card with some ports but the timing of the WD TV launching its product in the Market is excellent. WD TV has used its brand name and launched a reliable product and thats is what counts. No doubt there will be more players entering soon and the competition is really going to hot up. SO things can look only better from here onwards :)

Thats a hard comment on WD TV mate.

WD TV has been developed for specific segment of audience. For example me, I dont need Network I need a HD player which can compliment my plasma and also which is upgradable (DVDp are not so dont even compare). Thats what I call no frills no nonsense HD player which WD TV is.

Let me also tell, DVD rips played via DVDp is much better in PQ than the PQ of a regular DVDp.

Not many people are in the search for NMT if you look at the general population. The majority will not care for network they will need a player that can play HD.

So for a simple HD player that can make full use of your HD experience, there is nothing to beat WD TV today at its price equation.

Mine is 4 months old and going strong. Just cover it when not in use and also switch of the main supply of WD TV as even in off mode the hard disk is read.

Actually there is no difference between using a HDD inside a computer and as an external device. So there is nothing much you can do, in addition to what MadBullRam has suggested. I have been using two external HDDs for the last 2 years without any hitch. I have been carrying the drives to my office and back home everyday.

Keep the drives in a stable position, and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Also ensure there are no viruses in anything you download. They cause more harm than any physical entity.

If you are storing any essential information in the drives in addition to your music and movies, make sure they are backed up. A DVD writer will give you ample space for backing up files.

Power off the drives when not in use, and pray to God for a long life of your drives.

Cheers

Thx sir. Me too thinking of backing up all my HD content to DVD's. Alas when will BLU RAY become cheap  ? Monitoring it closely in Amazon . As soon as the price of a Blu Ray writer reaches $ 100 I am gonna have one shipped from USA !

Yes, even with my NMT, the powertoggle on remote does not really switch off the power completely. The unit stays warms. I had discussed this earlier.

But there is an option of "Power + delete" on remote, which switches off the unit completely, but then remote cannot power it back "on". So I need to press (twice) the manual power switch on the unit to bring it back "on".

To have total control of the unit through remote, you maybe interested in this product: Gadget.brando.com.hk

I bought 3 units in one shipping. So @ $10/ unit. Works well.

Yes I did, it takes about 12-15 days for delivery. No customs duties.
Go for small items if you want to avoid any custom duties. I have been buying occasionally from Brando. No problems.
