Buy the sub and Plate amp since you are interested and I will get it constructed for you at cost price. I am based in Pune however I drive down to Bombay every forthnight for a day or two. I am based in the suburbs as well. So i can build the cab in Pune and get it down to Bombay.
However if u have an audiophile buddy in B'bay to do it for you..Even better.
Or Else the offer is open to you and anyone else who may be interested

10" OR 12" purely depends on you considering the present thread is based on 12" peerless. I guess that's a good start. The plate amp is also a part of the discussion in this thread. So lets stick to this particular driver/amp for now.
However considering the driver is under 3k and plate amp if my memory serves me right around 8k . It should be a kick ass sub and beat commercial subs twice the price

The Fs is pretty low and can be tuned lower in a suitable ported sub. However it purely depends on which speakers are you planning to mate it with .
Are u looking at sealed or ported, ? front firing, down firing etc etc.
For this specific driver down firing would be out of the question since it is not designed for that application. the surrounds may sag.

So before deciding on Driver Size, Amp power etc.
1. What speakers are you mating them to .
2. What is the roll off frequency of your present speakers
3. Sub for HT or Music
4. Size Constraint for Sub box .
5. Room size. you would need a higher power amp or ported sub if your room is over 150 - 170sqft

In general Sealed boxes have a much smaller footprint so would take up less space, More complex to make because of additional bracing and "MAY" need a bigger amp. However tighter bass and more musical.

Ported boxes are larger a little easier to build, more efficient than sealed counterpart, and can be tuned for a particular freq. Trade off would be accuracy. (debatable)

If you can gather up 2-3 people. It will be a lot easier for me to build as opposed to individual requests. I am doing this as a hobby, so weekends and alternate evenings is the only time I would get to do it.

I will build the cab in Pune as I have access to skilled carpenters and tools.
I can go ahead and design the box or if you have a specific design in mind for the enclosure we can use yours. In fact it would be better if u design the enclosure and I get it built.
The overall finish in terms of paint/veneer etc of the end product purely depends on you and how much you want to spend. You can get that done in bombay or I can get it done here in Pune

the music/movie ratio will be 70:30
room is 14' x 11'

The tech specs are very intimidating for me ...
I will go by what ever you deem right for my setup
Just having a DIY equipment in my collection is a good enuf reason
i don't have much choice anyway
bcoz this will be my first sub ....

Sealed or Ported, front or down firing?, i will have to go by your judgment...
but preferably it should be of medium size not very big...
bcoz it will be placed in my living room...

If it sounds good we will wait for more responses, so that few more people
can come in and once we have 3-4 confirmations we can go ahead
and buy stuff and go ahead....

You have a very good pair of floorstanders. IMO 14x11 overkill but I am pretty sure u are in Sonic Bliss.
The KEF Q500 if I am not mistaken has 2 Passive Radiatiors or maybe 1 not sure. Since it is floorstanders it should give you a pretty flat response down to 40-45hz. Which means you need the sub only for the lowest frequencies. Using the Denon's Bass management, I guess U would set the crossover at 60hz-80hz.
A 200 watt plate amp would be more than adequate. considering peaks would be restricted at around 400 - 600 watts . For a 14x11 you would not need anything more. ""EVER""

Now boiling down to Sub design-
Ported will go louder and lower if we tune the box to a particular frequency. However the tradeoff would be size.
Considering your use is primary HT then Ported IMO makes more sense.

Since space is going to be a constraint. If your budget permits . you can go for sealed but instead of ported cabinet we can use 2 Passive radiatiors .
I am a huge fan of PR's and so is our other FM DIYer GeorgeO.
PR's will give u the same benefits of ported and the advantage of a sealed enclosure size. Plus no port noise, cleaner bass etc etc. We need 2 additional drivers and cut of the magnet and add weights etc (dont want to get into tech gyan)
we can use a single PR but its advisable to have it at a larger surface area as compared to the active driver. So for a 12" sub , a single 15" PR or two2 12" PR. the 15" PR defeats the purpose of enclosure size.
End result with PR's ... A mind blowing sub , and U will never need anything better. unless u move it to a 20 x 11 room or larger
However the PR setup it could exceed your budget.
But something to think about. it boils down to your personal preference/ choice

What dimensions do you feel will be appropriate for u without spoiling the aesthetic look of your living room. LxWxH. On the basis of your dimensions lets work out if we can construct a ported or sealed
Since real esate is freakin expensive in B'bay, we can make the sub look like a Tea Table/etc etc. So you can use it for dual purpose. It would keep your wife happy as well :lol:

There are a lot of write ups on ported / Sealed / PR subs. have a looksie. and decide.

Since you were referring to tea table kinda sub in living room, the first one which comes to my mind is Table tuba (32x32x16) which will be a good option (you can keep it at the side of the room also), if you have access to good carpenters and spend some time studying the design and teach the carpenter how to do it, it worth the effort. With my Tuba HT I am a fan of folded horns. Google to find the different aesthetic possibility on this design.

The dimensions seems to be fine for a sealed sub as well. If planning to build one, try to acquire a plate amp of 200w or above. For ported version as in the plan, 150w should be sufficient. I am currently using 120w amplifier.

but would love to save the $200

20*25 you would need something bigger. However considering you have the Quad11L2 in such a big room and content with your setup it clearly states that you are not someone who listens to music at high volumes as u mentioned. So for a low to medium volumes a 200watt Plate amp is more than sufficient. anything bigger and bass would just drown out the fronts. However if u did have floorstanders and listened to music at higher volumes then a bigger sub would be appropriate.

Its a tough choice though. If you are planning on upgrading your fronts to floorstanders in the future. Then get your self a bigger plate amp + SuB

If you looking for a really musical sub look at GR research 12" servo driver and SA plate amp or rythmikaudio 370 plate amp.

You will never hear a single person anywhere ever complain that their sub is too powerful ... So think hard and take the call

The ported version will be better suited for your room and the Quads. 230w will leave you enough headroom for HT use as well.
