DIY sub using Peerless driver available locally

The ported version will be better suited for your room and the Quads.

Would really appreciate if you could explain the reasoning behind the conclusion :) From the reading I have done, people seem to prefer sealed subs for music and ported ones for HT. I have never owned a sub so I have no first hand experience.

My focus is on accuracy of the reproduction, rather than the heart pounding slam.

You are absolutely correct .. Sealed does give a tighter bass and has a much smaller footprint than a ported one.
However the difference of a properly constructed ported sub will give u the same tight accurate bass similar to a sealed one.

Your room size is pretty large which means you would need a big plate amp and a really big driver to reach the same SPL as a ported one.
In that sense a Ported one would give u the benefit of SPL when called for.

I would say IMO a sealed unit in a medium size room and ported in a larger room. the ported will give u enough of headroom as T anthony mentioned.

Design the cabinet properly get the port holes size length correct and u will not hear chuffing / port noise and you would get pretty accurate bass. Plus the option to tune the cabinet to a frequency.
For example I am building a cabinet with 12hz one port open -3db and 18hz 2 ports open. ( I am using the Rythmik DS1510 driver + H600PEQ amp ) . I have a thread with the build.

For my listening style, a musical sub is a fill in to reveal the lowest octaves of music that cannot be reproduced by the main speakers. And I found this sub performing well when crossed at a low frequency to compliment the acoustic rollof of my ported MTM mains. My observations are here - http://www.hifivision.com/diy/19965-my-ported-subwoofer-3.html#post277487. Your experience could be similar since your Quad is also a ported design.

The lowest octaves of music are rather felt than heard, and you will need a bit of acoustic gain to compensate for your room size, by design ported is more efficient than the sealed, and that makes it a better choice.

The port tuning frequency is 21Hz :)

Try few Bass Centric music - lots are avlb - but not my type.
few, I can recall are from songs by Enya ( most of her albums ), few of them from celine dion - for example "I don't know" - the first 40 secs of the bass should make you feel that you are sliced to pieces. - this is not heart pounding, but a low freq that's quite sharp wherein you should be able to make out every part of the strings vibration - provided you have proper sub.

Ok Folks

Update: the amp buy is confirmed.

It is priced at 8500,(exchange rate fluctuations) shipping charges extra, and once you PM me your confirmation and address for shipping I will send you the party's bank acct info. Please deposit the amount and I will inform the vendor. I have some extensive travel plans during Feb, with limited internet access during that period so if you guys can complete everything in the next 5-6 days I can ensure that everything is done quickly.

Please note that I have no connection with the vendor who is based in Pune, except that he is a friend and I have bought 2 similar amps( one about 2 years ago and another 2 months ago) for a good friend from him and both are working satisfactorily.

Cheers

OK, since this thread has been open for more than a month now I'm going to assume that this is the final number. Accordingly I am requesting Antony not to add any more numbers to the plate amp-if anyone wants to get more drivers, no sweat, go ahead. I will contact my source over the next few days and check about the availability of five plate amps. They should be directly shipped from the vendor after you deposit the exact amount into his account-I will PM you the info once it is all finalized.

Participants from Bangalore have received the drivers from Varsha Electronics.

I will start another group for Bangalore if people are interested.

Probably a little OT, but might be useful to first time plywood/MDF buyers.

I had a hard time finding the prices of plywood on the net. After a lot of search, I landed on this PDF pricelist by one Indian manufacturer. The prices by other manufacturers will not be very different.

I also bought 1" Greenply MDF at Rs 80/ sqf. He also had (what he called) an imported Malaysian version for Rs 70/sqf.
