DIY sub using Peerless driver available locally

sudhishkv

The BASH amp is 500w at 4 ohms right ?
Both the Ahuja drivers are rated at 8 ohms 640watts rms . I don't however foresee that to be a problem. However I feel the Plate amp will be a TAD underpowered

PA drivers should go tremendously loud. However I am not too sure if they would have the finesse to go down very low. Most PA subwoofers drivers are designed to play at max db in the 40-45hz region
The L18-SW650 has an FS of 32hz so with box port tuning you should be able to go down a octave or two.

My personal opinion would be
The Peerless 12 incher I think would be a better bett as it is rated at 500w rms as well with an fs of low 20's. with a well designed cabinet and carefu tuned ports. It should hit pretty low

What are your room dimensions? This could be a very important deciding factor as well

Got the quote for the Ahuja L18-SW650 which is Rs.10190. Do you think that is a good one for this amp?

I have couple of L15-LF500 and used them in the past in Open Baffles powered by a 120w RMS amp. They could make powerful bass even in a rudimentary Open baffle. The 18 incher is also looking good specs-wise, it could be good for sub duty. Since all the driver specs are available in the Ahuja site, first try simulating an enclosure in a program like unibox or winisd.

Alternatively you could also consider building two subs with the 12" peerless driver and power them with the same Bash amp.

I have a 12" Sony Xplode subwoofer driver in my car. Can I use that with the Bash amp to build the Tuba HT? It is 1000watts PMPO, so the real power of the speaker will be very less. Any idea exactly how much it is?

It is written on the subwoofer itself. Rated power 300Watts at 4 Ohms. The amp is 500Watts at 4 Ohms. I think i shoudn't go with this driver and should find a good 15" driver with 500watts RMS.

No problem with the driver paired with the amp you have. The only thing is don't crank up the volume more than half its mark. BTW do you ever foresee to play the sub at 100w rms? This should be way too loud for a 'normal' set of ears in a 'decent' sized room.

Since you have not yet started with the build, ask Bill on the compatibility, he will check and confirm.
Also there is one more tapped horn design which is having almost the same performance as THT, Lilmike's Cinema F-20 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1329971), but with small footprint. Check with him also.

To get high SPLs from THT a high powered amp is not at all required, even with an amp <100w is more than enough. I think you had already ordered the bash amp. You can use it to power 2 THTs in future.

Hi,

While looking at a THT myself, I asked Bill about a JBL GTO 804, its a good driver apparently. The real star I was told is the GTO 1014, both of which are available here. Like Sajith said ask Bill, if you've bought the plans or post on the forum, you'll get answers.

Regarding the F20, please post with the TS params and somebody could sim it for you. Going blindly with either design can go either way.

About the power, the amp you have is more than enough. Horns are very efficient (acoustic couplers) and you've got plenty.

regards,
Sunil

Good news for the Bangalore members, there are three new 12" Sub drivers available for pickup from HFV member Yugraj. Those who are looking for drivers my PM him - his handle is sutra.

Whats Driver part no(company model)? The magnet looks smaller than the size of driver, does it reduce the Bass depth?

Got details of a subwoofer plate amp today from Varsha Electronics. The quoted price is Rs.5000 + VAT and courier charges. The specs look decent and looks like another cost effective option for the forum members.

Power : 200 watt RMS @ 4 ohms
THD : less than 0.05% at rated power
Frequency response : 20Hz - 150Hz +/- 1 dB
Filter : - 24 db butterworth continuously variable form 40 hz to 150 Hz
Eq : +/- 12 dB at 50 Hz
Inputs : Stereo RCA and stereo high level
Dimensions : 250 mm x 220 mm x 80 mm ( w x h x d)
Weight : Approx 7Kg
Controls : Cut off frequency, Eq and Volume.

It's a locally assembled amp, build quality looks fine from the pictures. I am posting the pics here for the benefit of the members.

@George/Antony
Here's a couple of pics of the Dynamite-Class D-150W amp from Mahendra from Pune. I'm posting the pic here since he's send me the amp directly and I just wanted to double check on whether it's the same product. Should have done it earlier but thought I was getting unnecessarily paranoid.
What set me thinking was the weight (its 1.2Kg) and the size of the transformer compared to the above. (Not a plate amp expert, just anxious)George I would appreciate if you would take a look at the above and concur if its the same bought by your friend earlier.
Thanks

I'm not GeorgeO or T.Anthony but you can take it cool. The additional weight of the Class AB amp referred to by T.Anthony because it has a Class AB amp with a sizable heat sink and massive toroid for the linear power supply adding to the weight significantly whereas the one you've got is Class D powered by SMPS.

Captain has already answered your question.

I had similar reservations when I first saw the Behringer iNuke NU1000 amplifier :)

I picked up some other drivers from Jeetubhai a while ago when I was in Bombay. I have not picked up the sub driver as yet.
Want to finish off my other builds first.
I guess I will pick it up directly from him when i visit him again

Gijo

As Rajesh said, Class D amps using SMPS power supplies are lighter by design-I have on which is more powerful but less than half the weight of an older one with a transformer.
