HFV Mini Meet for Genelec Studio Monitors Demo @ Mahim, Mumbai

I have always been fascinated with Pro gears . I had with me at some point of time or other Dynaudio BM5A, Adam A7, Focal cms 65 as well as 50 , neumann 120etc.
Presently having Genelec 8030 pair with me for two channel music .Wonderful sound from a small package.Using them without sub. I have described earlier also , the sound has a more "LIVE" character, so not very smoth placid sound , than a passive spk being driven by average amp . Requires to be matched with a preamp and good wires made of Beldon , mogami. with good connectors from NeutriK etc.
Would like to know the impressions of Denom and others more specific to 8030. It is said that Genelec 8030 is an ideal size which gives fuller sound with details and one may not go for 8040 which is quite costlier. I have heard that Genelec 8030 is the most selling model of Genelec 8000 series.

This should give a 'ball' park idea to you;

The prices in India are higher - but then there is a D & D present - demo room & installation & calibration etc. All that is included in the price....

Take especial note of the "ea" after each speaker price.

Well, if a person listens to music at their computer, and especially if they spend as much, or more time, doing that than sitting with the hifi, then there is absolutely no reason why the budget for that listening should be any less than the budget for the living room

Lucky man! I loved Rokits in the shop where I was buying something a lot cheaper; I've since got fascinated by Adam and Genelec.

(the car has to be replaced: all hifi-kit interest is going to be restricted to dreaming for a year or three now  )

Good to see you guys enjoyed the visit! I wish I could have been there too :(

Hi Binoy,

Glad to hear that you own a pair of the 8030's :) Enjoy!!!
As far as I experienced, the sound signature of all 8000 series of the Genelec's was identical, it was only the higher SPL 1 got as 1 moved towards the bigger models, so really it depends on the size of the room where you will be setting up the speakers which will dictate the choice of the specific model from the range of Genelec's. This was also reaffirmed by the Engineer of Genelec(Clifford).

For me there were 2 really big Eye openers as far as Genelec's are concerned
1) The Identical Sound Signature Infact, Clifford explained that Genelec has taken great pains to maintain a uniform sound signature across their range of speakers. This is a unique thing as 1 usually hears a lot of different sound signatures in various models of 1 speaker manufacturer.
2) The Beautifully awesome seamless integration of the Subwoofers of theirs with the stereo speakers, in 1 word - MINDBLOWING!!! All the more as I have personally always maintained a BIG NO-NO towards having a Sub in a 2 channel set-up, BUT after listening to Genelec's Subs, I now am a BELIEVER in 2.1!!!! (Sadly only managed so far by Genelec's) atleast as far as my hearing experience has been so far.

The small speakers punched way about their weight. The next two sizes were great too, and i had to leave after that. But i bet they must have been special too. Good build quality.

Hello Friends,

First of all let me thank Bhagwan, Denom, Prashant Damle & Clifford Pereira for making our day a memorable moment and the fellow members for participating.

These speaker sounded very fabulous, detailed and for the size those Tiny Speakers were really amazing. Never heard amazing sound from a speaker of this size. Best part is one has not to look for a matching Amp. All the speakers are Active and a decent Pre Amp will do the job.

Their sound signature was identical across the range and mann the speakers disappeared. It was very difficult to say which speakers were being played.

Then came the demo on these speakers which were again sounding vey nice.

Then came these bad guys.

Denom played some heavy Rock on these speakers and they were just fabulous. Best of all the lot.

Then came the HT Demo. Clip of Casino Royale with above speakers as fronts
, Center, Surrounds, Preamp and A Subwoofer of a Unit Size shown below. My Unit is smaller than this Subwoofer

Only thing I can say that we were in a Best Sounding Movie Theatre. :clapping::yahoo: I think TheCoolestone & Denom will also agree on same.

PC Speakers.

As Denom mentioned Prashant did opened up the speaker for us.

Thanks Darshan, very nice photos.Only you need to correct the sequence of the members names.
I had to leave & so I missed the dissection of Genelec 6010A.Even HT clips & big speakers.
How do they sound?

Good pictures Darshan. You have captured every moment.

Just to add to above pictures and reviews:

(1) It took Prashant not more than 3 minutes max to open up the speakers. The only tool used was a "allan key".

(2) What really hooked me on and the best part as mentioned by Prashant/Clifford is that Genlec offers spares for decades and they will all have the same sound signature, so even if your original speaker was bought say 20 yrs ago and you needed a replacement today not only would spares be available but there would also be no variation in the sound signature. All you need to do is provide your serial number to Genelec and you are good to go.

(3) The HT setup was simply amazing. The sub blew us away and that too when it wasnt even playing at its full potential. We were told that there was a lot more legroom left in the sub but it was eased down as it was calibrated to match the speakers. I cant even imagine what they will sound like when powered uo to theie fukl potential.

(4) All in all the mini wonders (6010A)were a bang for the buck. Imagine the clutter you can do away with just by hooking up these active babies to a decent DAC.

Looking forward to future mini meets.

Seems you guys had a blast. :)

One question, since all their speakers are powered, how would one manage the sound with one master volume in a HT set-up? Am I missing something massive?

Yes;
D.J. Thanks - Nice Pictures !!

I will keep this happening - I just need people to come & be ready to experience audio & keep an open mind - there is so much to be 'exposed' to & learn... for all of us !!

As time passes - I will try and expose you to the different kinds of sounds [set ups] - what to listen for - how to set up audio systems etc.
There is so much fun in all this - all needs to be experienced & heard & felt !!
Keep the momentum in place & the journey will be one filled with +ve vibes !!

Sir,

The DVD Player is a Lexicon - RT-10 [I think]
Feeds the signal to a Denon Professional AV Pre [Rs. 40K I think] - This pre gives 5 XLR Analogue Outs.
Each goes to 1 speaker - via the sub.

Sub Plays up to 80 hertz.

The Monitor plays everything above 80 hertz.

Hope it sheds some light...

The speakers can be connected directly to DVDp (which can be with volume control & 5.1 analog out for HT purpose). Here DVDp will do DAC/Decoding job & with built in volume controller ,DVDp can act like master volume.

Else a preamp for 2ch & AVR with preout for HT.

@denom: next time listen to this tiny speakers playing Extreme's "Warheads". The intro which is a panned helicopter sound can be heard even behind you. They image like crazy.

If anyone is in the market for very revealing computer speakers and not too bothered about lower freq extension, these are the speakers for you. Will set you back by about 40K-ish. Another 40K-ish will buy you the matching subs.

Sad that work held me up and I could not attend this great meet.

Here one thing one should understand that actives (leaving the pmc and atc etc) are not for everyone taste as far as two channel music goes . The sound is little course and dryish due to built in amp. The built in amp has some effect on sound signature . Studio people use them for ease of use. For two channel music i think a studio passive monitors with an external amp is likely to be more liked in general,But for HT , there is no issue. Genelecs are good option for HT as powered monitors .
The Cheap active spks like krk Rokit etc will not keep you happy only for a short time as the sound coming from them are more dry in nature, and rough.

I am on your page - partially.

I endorse Active Monitors for HT. They are a super solution - easy to install & cost effective & have a great power delivery.

However, for 2 channel, I have 'reservations'
I will explain this to all of you - when we meet for the Home Visits.
Why do I prefer passive products for music @ home & active speakers for HT.

All said, I do use a Tannoy Ellipse 8 [3 way active studio monitor] myself in my office.

This is the speaker being used in a studio !! Mine are rather differently positioned...On dedicated stands & rather high !

So Binoy, what you mean to say is that people in general like coloured sound??? When something is more natural, its bad????

I think we need to have these 'doubts' cleared first. And yes, I know that this topic is highly subjective, but then we must try to get some answers to what is what, don't you think???

Need of the hour is experts who are part of the audio industry to help us gain insight to this subject & impart information/knowledge on it.

Otherwise this discussion has no end to it :p
