The 12C is not McLarens first sports car. In the early 1990s it developed the extraordinary F1. With a selling price of a $1m and a top speed of 240mph it was the fastest and technically most extreme car ever built for the public highway. But it launched in the depths of a recession; only 103 were ever made.
