Lets talk about blurays--movies/ scenes/audio/pq /repeat values

It is one of my first box set collection in 2007 next to spiderman & RE. For me the PQ is OK but SQ is not so attractive and lack puch. I have MI-1,2 & 3 in DVD and the DTS soundtrack in DVD is much better than BD.

I feel the PQ is good upgrade to DVD and the rating is inbetween.. Cannot score 5 star. If you are an fan go for it or wait for rerelease later

I completely echo your sentiments. I have the BD box set.. mpeg2 video encode, lots of noise, sound is good without being awesome. but the movies are so pacy (After yuou suspend disbelief) that you forget all that..

Hi

This is like adding Oil to the Fire wrt my Bluray DVD pruchases. Just few day's back I took the advantage of 20north's free shipping offer and ordered about 30 odd movies and decided that this would be my last BD purchases for this year.........then thaught a year is too long......so it would be for the next 6 months. After a week I'm at HongKong's International Airport, and to my horror I see an add Buy 2 Bluray's Get 2 Bluray's free:eek: So I picked up 10 more and got 10 more free :yahoo: And then I land at Australia and go to this JB-HiFi store and see this add Buy 2 Bluray's Get 1 Bluray's free:eek: could not resist, but did not buy......... just waiting for my resistance to reach the peek:D

cheers.

Hi Aneel,

What were the BDs you bought in HK, I might be passing through HKIA in a weeks time, let me know the shop details?

I am also planning to buy my first set of BD's. Does it make sense to buy a complementary set and have a circulating library amongst members in the same city.

For example, some movies we need to have for keeps, others may be for only a few watches.

I am looking at buying - Planet Earth,Pan's Labyrinth, Matrix series, Apocalypto.

I am not sure there is any point in getting the ones I have in DVD again in BD, any views?

am open to the idea of circulating BDs among us

some movies on bds feels like you are watching it for the first time though u have seen it earlier on dvd ,its a totally different experience ,a good example is Casino royale , kung fu panda etc, etc

Hi
Hi Aneel,

I got the following from HKIA:- Monsters Inc, Cars, Wall-E, Shrek 1/2/3, KungFu Panda, Madagascar 1/2, Bolt, The Incredibles, Up, Finding Nemo, Toy Story 1/2/3, A Bugs Life, Over The Edge, Discrict9 and Casino Royal.
And this offer was there only for 2 days(not sure about the occassion for sale), lucky me. But the price of the BD is qiute high. Each BD ranges from HK$280-300, if this offer was not there it's not worth paying so much for the BD's i guess. There is only 1 store throughout the HKIA for electronics namely sound&vision.

I am also planning to buy my first set of BD's. Does it make sense to buy a complementary set and have a circulating library amongst members in the same city.

I've no problem for this option.

cheers

Wow man, you are on a spree:). JB Hi-fi always has excellent deals. If you are in Melbourne, go to their store on Lonsdale Street, best for Audio CDs and Blu-rays.

I am game too. Currently, I have a small but growing collection of Blu-rays.

Whoaaaa mannn, 30+20, i.e. that's 50 BD's in a month.. Amazing and darn, you beat me fare and square in it ;-) Just now checked and I bought only 25 movies two TV series(one 6 disc and other 5 disc, now guess what they are;-) ;-) ) within last one and half month (I'm not counting the DVD's here.). So I'm still not a big spender like my friends make me out to be.

And BTW, that idea about rotating is nice.

BTW, just wanna know, older movies (have my eyes set on some westerns, e.g Good bad and ugly and some more) do they make sense to get in BD's? Or DVD will suffice as I feel that there may not be huge difference in the PQ when upscaled for these old movies (using a 42 inch TV and hence the question).

I am in for this Idea.

The simplest way to share would be to have a collections signature which lists all the blu ray movies that you have. Those interested would then PM the owner and trade or rent it. Not sure if we can have a collections list in HFV so we could decided one common place like blu-ray.com.

BTW, found a great site to compare the audio/video quality of blu ray films across the world. Was having a tough time deciding whether to buy from amazon uk or US esp. that UK seems much cheaper for all titles at this point of time.

hi sud98

where are you put up , PM me your Mb lets start off , will update my BD collection on blu-ray.com

Pirates of the Caribbean :Trilogy: UK : At World's End is region locked for B. All other discs(even the the feature disc for AWE) are region free. Was bit of disappointed to see this once I got the pack :-(.. Probably gonna sell it to someone who has a region free player.

Now some reviews:
Bourne Supremacy: I've put into mind about the shaky camera thing and now I'm enjoying the movie more. Felt that this one is bit better in the PQ terms than the other two. And a great movie it is.
X-Men Trilogy: (X-Men and X-Men 3): Watched only part 1 completely till now. Thousand times better than the DVD version. Enjoyed watching this movie again. Watched part of The Last Stand too and the picture quality and SQ looks very promising.
Top Gun: Bit dark/grainy sky initially(kind of feel like lack of detail, not like intentional grains of some other movies) and I was thinking that may be not so good transfer for a old movie. But as things warmed up(literally) it started looking awesome (atleast compared to the DVD) and those dog fight scenes just blew my mind away(again). Loved watching this all time favourite movie again on HiDef.
Planet Earth: Disc 1:Chapters(Mountains,Fresh Water) Amazing amazing quality of video. I;m keep gonna watch this disc repeatedly for sure. Paused in many places just to see a the amazing vistas.
Planet Earth: Disc 5: Chapters(Snow Leopard): Good video quality but not as great as the 1st disc. Most probably due to the fact that it was shot in some very harsh conditions with not much help from the light. But a nice documentary to watch.

saw the BDS of POC triology at stores (planet M) very competitevly priced @ 999/- BD ,so i guess the prices are coming down, they were Reg ABC

yeah, me too show them today, and with AWE with region ABC:mad:. Got tempted to buy, most probably will buy to complete the collection. Yeah, prices are coming down for some but still US/UK is whole lot cheaper except in very few cases like Spidey Trilogy( India is 2.5k and US is 3k), but even here UK is cheaper. If anyone buying trilogies then UK amazon is the best place for sure.

Little bit of Update on Top Gun: Just found that this have DTS-HD MA track, and oh boy, isn't it better than the Dolby True-HD. Just checked with the first scene and the DTS track just blows you away. You can clearly hear the difference between these two tech. Gonna watch the movie again in DTS-HD MA.

Watched Melgibson's Patriot on Bluray. This bluray got an amazing transfer.Video quality is awesome.Black levels are deep.Audio quality is even better.
If you are fan of the movie, its a must have.

I havent yet got my BD player and BD's, will take a month to reach. I plan to get the following - Master and Commander/Apocalypto/Planet Earth/King Kong/Incredible hulk/Mamma Mia. A mix of US and UK region.

I stay in Marthahalli,Bangalore. I will PM you my contact details, will call you once I get my set.

POC 3 --worlds end , BD @ 999/-

but on checking the cover its 1080i and theres no HD audio
Ohhh is it? That's bad news. The one I've is 1080p (16:9/1.85:1) and with PCM5.1 (so that takes care of the HD audio part I hope). But anyway, can't play it till get a modded player. There is even a line saying DTS-HD Master Audio, so can't exactly say what it exactly have unless I'm able to play it.
