Tata Sky launches Tata Sky+ HD at just Rs. 3999/

Ok..I connected a yellow RCA cable (video) cable from coaxial of my receiver to STB Coaxial. I get the vocals in center speaker although I dont think this is the same clarity as my HDMI sound from the tata sky HD box earlier. maybe the RCA does not carry the entire sound signals.

Also earlier when I went from other channels to 565 and 567, the display changed from Stereo or Dolby movie and such to DD Digital...but now the display doesnt change when I go from non HD channel to HD channel..so I guess the RCA is not the right way to go about...have to adjust till I get an optical cable.

Anyone know where the cheapest place to get optical cable?

Stop doing that - you may damage the port!!!

You can get optical/coaxial cable at any sony/samsung/panasonic etc showroom or landmark or croma or ezone - basically wherever audio/video/computer & electonic products are sold - I got one optical cable from the local electrical shop for some <150 bucks.

Regarding PS3, not that is not the reason. Why? Find me one AVR that supports Audio processing Via HDMI, and does not support Dolby or DTS. Because I have a PS3, and I have noticed time and again that any file that has AC3 track will be decoded. However if I prefer optical out instead of HDMI, then PS3 will stream it in AC3.
But for some funny reason, PS3 will bitstream DTS tracks.
PS3 can transmit DTS HD MA and Dolby True HD. Their decoders are not available on cheaper HDMI capable receivers of today.

(1) Is my setup (one single RCA from STB to Receiver Coaxial) +(Hdmi from STB directly to TV) the right combo in absence of optical cable?
(2) What is the most affordable way to get an optical cable in Bangalore?
Nat Geo HD has this issue and your setup is PERFECT. I have been using coaxial digital outputs since past 8 years and have NEVER faced any issue. However optical pass the SAME audio data after converting to optical signals and receiver decode them to electrical yet again. You may face SEVERAL ISSUES USING OPTICAL cables (especially cheaper Rs.200 ones), on the contrary, ANY COAXIAL CABLE (even make shift badly hand converted ones I have used years before) WORKS PERFECTLY.

Only benefit of using optical is that it ELECTRICALLY ISOLATE receiver with the STB, however if you have some electrical connectivity directly with the STB (like HDMI, Composite/Component Video, Analog LR) or through TV, that isolation does not exist! Also, only thing that "common ground" coaxial cable can create is to induce electrical "humming" noise from STB (if it exist) which is easily isolated by our state of the art HT Receivers anyway.

Hence I strongly recommend any decent RCA cable which do not have any loose connectivity to get the DD5.1. Even an inexpensive Rs.10 cable will do without any loss in quality (as data is digitally transmitted).

got mine installed today. Just the hdmi cable to projector, and stereo analog outs to stereo amp.
It may be a placebo effect but I find the quality of SD much better than earlier stb that connected over the yellow single video out wire. This is from 2yr old memory.
Discovery was looking stunning. Nat geo was showing off too much with slow motions. Couldn't spend more than 10 mins as I had to take my mother to the doctor. Will share further impressions later.
When will the HD broadcast of sports channel begin. I got this done for the world cup.

Thats the beauty of all the HD STBs - All SD content gets upscaled to HD and faithfully "digitally" transmitted to TV eliminating losses between STB and TV and correcting some of the SD errors by upscaling to HD (which is usually much better than TV's upscaling).

Just got a Call yesterday night from TS+HD folks. My box should arrive at my house tomorrow end of day. ( That means they took 3 days). Blame it on the high demand :p

PS3 Can bitstream DTS-MA and Dolby Tru-HD. I'm yet to see an AVR that can process HDMI audio, but not do the above 2 formats.
However PS3 Cannot Bitstream Dolby Digital (AC-3, 5.1 Audio found on DVD's) from Digital Copies of the movies(PS3 sends it as 5.1 PCM to the AVR).However if the movies were encoded with DTS sound track, then it bittreams it to the AVR. This is perhaps a bug.

Also PS3 does not encode game audio in DD/DTS if your AVR can do MultiChannel PCM

Ok, got mine installed yesterday. Quality of picture seems to be even better than tata hd, which i was using earlier - thrilled, to say the least. Can also confirm that 5.1 is not available on hdmi, so using coax now.

can anyone confirm when espn hd and movies now hd channels are going to be launched?

I still haven't got my tata sky + hd box after 7 days. Missed WC opening ....No proper info from CC....called up more than 20 times in last week, only false assurances...

BTW about an earlier post regarding Dolby Digital Plus on Tata Sky + HD, it cannot relay DD+ audio signal without HDMI 1.3+ it would be downgraded to DD signal(Checked Dolby Site)

No guarantees this will work but ...

I had the same issue - after 4 days, they kept taking requests. Yesterday night i called up and said i want to cancel. This morning the installation was done.

+1 to above... TS kept dilli-dallying my install for days together and as soon as I insisted to be connected to the cancellation department (and I really meant it), the install was completed the next day which was surprisingly a public holiday...It's a sad state of affairs that service providers need to be pushed, prodded and threatened to just deliver what they are expected to do in first place.

Is there a thread to discuss hacks and features? Can I rip music/ dvd and transfer it to tatasky hd?
Can the hdd be replaced easily? What is the current storage capacity.

Same with me, they made me generate a OTP and VANISHED. After that no calls at all and I see that the HD Gold pack price has increased, CRAZY!!

Capacity is 500GB. As of now, I am unaware of any hack (might never be available as I do not see anyone working on it)

can anyone confirm if boxes are available in bangalore? I placed order on 15th and was promised that i will get it in 48 hours, so far nothing has been done.

Same experience here. Booked my HD+ last Saturday and till date no response. One local Tata Sky dealer in the vicinity comitted to deliver the box the same day.

Suprising the dealers are more efficient than the company folks

Today morning it downloaded new software; maybe its fixed the dd out through hdmi; if anybody can check and confirm... I dont have hdmi inputs in my avr...

Placed order on 16th Feb 2011. Service folks called and have fixed an appointment for 20th Feb 2011 for installation. I have a Tata Sky + now. Would they be re-wiring from the dish or change the dish?

^
No dish change; lnb may change if no. of connections increase; I got it rewired as its always better as my wire was years old and had suffered abuse; but its not a pre-condition if existing wire is ok; do definitely get a splitter based config as discussed...

for me it didnt downloaded i got the connection on 15th may be that was updated software which i got the first time, but theres no satellite scan in system setting so no way to check signal strength as mention by some ppl here they have that option in system setting but not me

The signal strength display menu is there but it is hidden. You need the secret code to view it. The guy who has installed showed me the signal strength.

Also found out that if you go to system details menu and press 0 and 1 you will unlock the menu to format the hardsisk.

And about the audio, it is just stereo through HDMI. If you connect the optical it shows as Dolby 5.1 but it is not having the actual quality of the dvd or bluray. It is just a simulated 5.1 surround (My pioneer receiver will do a better job than the tatasky box. I don't need them to do this for me).I removed the optical and changed the audio settings of the box to PCM. But my receiver showed stereo. So the signal received by the box is just stereo.

Tatasky cheated us nicely by giving us a simulated 5.1 surround(This is what i think they are doing, i am not an expert thoug).
